After DT got me into instrumentals I started to really appriciate guitarists like Satriani and Vai. Talk about some of your loved guitarists in here. They don't have to be on their own, they can be in a band. 3nodding

I like Ritchie Blackmores instumentals for Rainbow. They aren't as fast as people like Petrucci's but they've got atmosphere, which i think is more important than just playing really fast.
I still think Dream Theaters instrumentals are the best though.

I haven't heard of that... I'll definitely give it a listen.

Ritchie Blackmore's more famous for being the guitarist for Deep Purple. He wrote smoke on the water, which is probably his most famous song.
I don't know much Deep Purple stuff though, there are so many albums I could never decide which to get,but I've got all the Rainbow stuff. Ronnie James Dio made his name from Rainbow, and they had Cozy Powell on drums for a while. Their most famous songs since you've been gone (not the Kelly Clarkson one), which you might have heard sometime.

scream YOU FORGOT VINNIE MOORE!!!!!!!! scream scream

But seriously, Vinnie Moore is another great instrumental guitarist. I found an LP of his at a thrift store called Mind's Eye, and I picked it up. Sounds really good, and Vinnie is a great guitarist!

Note: Just listened to Once in a LIVETime again last night, and the John Petrucci Guitar Solo made my jaw drop. xd
