This seems like a safe place to put this.
I know I'm not the only one who has noticed them so let's see how many we can find. I'll number it just in case anyone is interested.

these first few are just about the Captains
1. they're both captains (duh)
2. they both wear long coats and suspenders
3. neither will hesitate to shoot someone who needs it

4. Both shows have episodes that begin with the main characters playing a basketball type game (and neither of them actually play by any rules.)
5. someone else on here has noted the similarities between "Out of gas" and "Fragments"

that's all I can think of at the moment.

Oh you are AWESOME!
They also have a crush on a woman with black hair...

Eh, I wouldn't call it a crush, I'd say Jack's up for anything & Mal's is more unrequited love (but only because neither of them will admit it).

Another similarity: Neither leader likes to talk about their past, & in both cases it took someone who was not who they seemed to be to get them to talk about it.

Ooooh.
Good point.

Ohey Firefly whut?

I thought I was all alone in my love for it. surprised

YAY PEOPLE *hugs*

- The goofy/cute sidekick gets a lot of the best quips (IMHO), but more importantly, they get to have some amazing heroic moments and both go out in a blaze of glory.

- Both had a crew member who was initially joining only to hide something. (Simon was protecting River, Ianto's sole purpose for joining was to save Lisa.)

- Both captains will do anything for their crew (Mal has nearly died a few times and Jack has died quite a few times)

I'll add more when I get there.

One episode is almost a twin of an episode of Supernatural (another good show if you're interested). Torchwood's Countrycide goes right along with Supernatural's The Benders. With the same message. "Demons/Aliens I get. People are nuts."

LOL I just watched "Benders"!
And I told my friend "That looks a lot like Countrycide." My friend's like "Yeah."
The antagonists even said the same thing!
Why do we do it? "Because it's fun."

I think a more appropriate analogy would be Inara joining: we still don't know her reasons for wanting to ship out.

Oooooooooh. Nice catch there. smile
And I think I know why, thanks to Morena saying something about Inara at a convention that Joss purportedly got upset that she said because it was to have been a later storyline had the show been renewed.
