who has watched this? I have a DVD though no subtitles =.=; I think it's about a cellist named Gauche (although I think in the movie it's Goshu, because it's jap.) that is out of tune then practices hard to be good... I think that's just the story haha... It just shows his everyday life. Boring... but his cat is cute and funny haha!

"Cello Hiki no Gauche" by Takahata Isao of Ghibli Studios is only out for Region 2 in Japanese with Chinese subtitles. (Check YesAsia, com) In English it is "Gauche the Cellist". Shinrin Minto's fiance bought in China this summer. We've been discussing it on the Chatterbox thread. I played cello and want to see it but I have to buy a DVD player for all regions first because my DVD player on plays Region 1. 3nodding

Sounds interesting! I wonder if I'd be able to find a copy of it.

Shinrin, I forgot to ask if the collection your fiance brought back from China had the DVD that I am looking for: Cello Hiki no Gauche by Takahata Isao (Gauche the Cellist)?

Yeah, it's there too. smile

Can anyone write a review? Shinrin?

Here is YesAsia's review:
Based on a classic Japanese story by author Miyazawa Kenji, Cello Hiki no Gauche (or Gauche the Cellist) tells the serene tale of young Gauche, a professional cellist who has been deemed the poorest member of his struggling orchestra. With 10 days left before a very important concert, Gauche practices away into the night - except he gets bothered nightly by forest animals who show up on his doorstep. But these animals have a goal: to give Gauche a true understanding of music, so that he can play the cello with all his heart.
Produced in 1982, Cello Hiki no Gauche is perhaps less familiar to English-speaking fans of director Takahata Isao. One of Ghibli Studios' most stalwart contributors, Takahata was responsible for the animated classics Grave of the Fireflies, Only Yesterday, and My Neighbors the Yamadas, among others. Cello Hiki no Gauche retains its charm years after its initial release through assured storytelling, simple character designs, universal themes, and of course a rich classical music score. Featuring English subtitles.

If you buy a DVD in the USA, it will be for playing on DVD players made to be sold in the USA, Region 1. It will be classified for Region 1. If you take that DVD to Europe and put it in a DVD made for use in Europe, Region 2, the DVD will not play. DVDs meant to be played on European sold markets play DVD's for Region 2. You would need another copy of your USA DVD for Region 1, but it would have to be a DVD of the same thing made for playing in Europe on machines sold in Europe and would be classified as a Region 2 DVD. The world was sliced up in to about 4-5 Regions when DVD players and DVDs first came out so that more money could be made by the manufacturers of both. In other words, all DVD players are not the same - they have a Region and all DVDs are not the same - they have regions, also. Not very convenient in a global economy and with people who travel globally or global interests. So, some DVD players are made especially so that they can play DVDs from all Regions (1-4/5). Eventually, all DVDs and all DVD players will be made equal.

A trick I play, if I can't find a DVD in the USA - it's soldout, etc - I will try buying it on the Japanese market, the Chinese market, and sometimes the European market as long as the vendor carries copies for Region 1 (USA). Yesterday I bought a DVD Region 1 from an Asian vendor for playing in the USA and specifically labeled that way - cannot be played in Asian market DVD players. The rights for the Asian market to sell the DVD were given to another film conglomerate and I bought my Region 1 DVD from them through an Asian vendor. In the USA, the rights to make and sell the exact same DVD were sold to another film conglomerate and DVD of that film made by that company are out of stock.

I've got a Apple iBook and running VLC to watch DVD's. Haven't had any problems at all with regional codes and I play DVD's from europe and usa ... best way to watch movies!!

also I had my stand alone DVD-player custom fitted to be region-code free. Surely there must be a thechie in your vincinity who can do the trick too!!
