Usually, the Ricciotti twins were seen together, excluding situations where they had to be apart, such as when the two were placed in different classes at school. The keyword being ‘usually’. Seeing just one of the pair was possible, but a rare occurrence. Despite their different dispositions, Canon and Forte were like two peas in a pod. They were more alike than it appeared at first glance, but they had their disagreements too.

Example being that Canon liked and appreciated having her nails done, Forte did not. Personally, he did not give a damn on how pretty his nails were. They could be discolored and chewed on and he would still not care. He absolutely refused to take even a step inside his sister’s favorite salon, preferring to stalk towards the bookstore across the street instead.

“It won’t take that long, ‘kay Forte? Have fun at the bookstore!” Her chipper voice still rang in his head as he gruffly pulled open the glass door and stepped inside, letting in a rush of wind.

Forte combed back his side bangs so that he could get a better picture of the store, but to no avail. They innocently slid back into place, obscuring one of his eyes.

He darted into the nearest aisle and reached out for a random book, uncaring of what kind of book he would be taking. Forte liked reading in general. It could be a textbook, a biography, or a novel and he would still read it.

A hand that was not his own reached out for that same book and Forte coiled back, grimacing and taking another book. “Sorry,” he mumbled.

Edwin looked up from the book he was already reading to the young man whose hand he had just bumped into.

Gender? Boy. Age? Young. What was up with all these kids out and about? Edwin had met one the other day, too, and boy had he been a bucket full of laughs.

Sarcasm.

Waving a hand airily at the boy that seemed to need a haircut, he said "Don't worry about it, do you like this... Ah, Audubon Guide to Tropical Bats too? I do. I love bats."

Lie. He had been hoping the hand he was casually bumping into was a lady's, not necessarily one that liked bats, but one that liked reading. The café crowd all knew his modus operandi at this point, and it was time to seek different romantic climates. Heck, the book he was reading didn't even belong to the store. It was, as usual, The Great Gatsby, and he had brought it with him. But as long as he had an opening, he might as well grab it. He was hungry for any sort of human interaction after a long week at work.

"It's very similar to fishing, you know," he announced casually, "Batting, that is."

[[ I'm sure I can arrange a meeting with Canon next time, Edwin. :U ]]

He could care less about bats, to be honest. Forte had simply gone after the nearest book he could get his hands on, it didn’t matter what it was about. The boy just wanted to feel the sensation of smooth paper between his fingers, to sink in the smell of books that surrounded him from all sides. It could have been a young adults novel or an autobiography for all he knew, but he would have immersed himself in its world all the same. Forte was obsessed with playing the violin, but he was very much a bibliophile too.

“I . . . find the topic to be interesting.” The boy carefully picked his words, twisting his thoughts into a more pleasing statement.

He slid his hands into the pockets of his jacket and casually focusing on other parts of the store rather than the older man before him. Forte was not a fan of socializing, but had yet to devise an unsuspecting way of slinking his way out of the conversation.

Hopefully, Canon would be done soon.

He cocked a visible eyebrow at the stranger. “Batting? As in catching bats? I never realized people liked to do that,” Forte replied. A short pause before he later added, “I’m Forte. Forte Ricciotti.”

Talking to a stranger. Yay.

((Roflllll, Edwin doesn't like em that young, but it's a lovely thought. XD))

Edwin, who was working from ten minutes of a PBS documentary on the subject, but bluffing for all he was worth, waved a hand airily. "Sure, it's a great hobby! You go out at night with, like, a really big net, tie it to a few good trees, then it's just a matter of waiting. It works best in the jungle. There're bigger bats there and stuff." Probably. "I like their, uh, wings and such. What do you like? About bats, I mean."

An awkward cough. Edwin couldn't quite believe he was having this conversation, so he seized upon the topic change the boy provided. He was running out of patience to talk about bats anyway.

"I'm Edwin, Edwin Kite." Thrusting his hand out for a handshake, he flashed a smile at his companion, adding, "I'm actually not an expert on bats. I'm a professor of Literature."

False. He had a degree in English and a late nights job at a warehouse.

[[ Canon: o: Then I'm sure I can arrange something with our older sister, Serenade! -giggles because of ItNotM- ]]

The boy stared at the man with an unconvinced face. He certainly didn’t sound like much of an expert on batting, but Forte wasn’t going to point that out to him. Forte was sure that he knew already.

His lips twisted into a contemplative grimace and he crossed his arms. What did he like about bats? “Their echo location is pretty neat,” Forte answered after a moment of thought, but found nothing else to add to it. Bats were interesting creatures, though they certainly weren’t his absolute favorite.

Another c**k of his eyebrow as he stretched out a hand and shook Edwin’s hand. He certainly didn’t give off the air a professor. The first thing Forte nitpicked was his young appearance. Weren’t professors supposed to be older? Forte had heard of assistant and part-time lecturers, but the image of an older professor wouldn’t shake from his mind.

“I find that a bit hard to believe.” A shrug. “Then again, I don’t look like I’d be a kid who’s won a number of music competitions.” He tried to hide the prideful gleam in his eyes.

"How so?" said Edwin, who puffed his chest out affrontedly. "I happen to be incredibly well versed in literature."

True, for once. Edwin was one smart cookie, he just happened to also be a particularly depressed and unmotivated cookie. A cookie at the bottom of the jar, so to speak. However, it was true that he didn't exactly look professorly. Not only was he young, his jeans were ripped and his t-shirt had a curry stain on it.

"So you're a musician, huh?" he asked, putting his thumb in his book. (He had only just now stopped reading it all the way, before his eyes would dart to the page every few seconds while he spoke.) "A pretty decent one, from the sound of it. What do you play?" Edwin didn't know much about music that wasn't rock n' roll, but there was always an off chance that the kid had been winning Battle of the Bands.

“Without a doubt I’m sure your words are true; however, it’s just that I always pictured professors to be. . .” His voice trailed off slightly while he mulled over the right word to choose. Forte highly doubted that Edwin would take kindly to the boy’s opinion that professors should look old, or at least decently middle-aged. “experienced-looking, you know?” he finally finished, hoping the slight pause had not come off as incredibly rude.

Forte nodded briefly. “Yes. Everyone in my family are musicians, actually,” he answered. He shifted his weight to one side, the current conversation now making him feel uneasy about the lack of his instrument. Although he did not often lug his violin case around when he was not practicing, he was with it for so long that its lack of presence was unsettling. “My siblings and I have won a few music competitions, yes. I happen to play the violin. Do you happen to play an instrument as well?”

He casually reached out to the bookshelf and delicately slid out a book about felines, flipping through the pages before settling on an intriguing chapter. “In fact, what kind of music genres do you listen to in general? Other than classical, I listen to some modern rock.”

"Protip, kid," said Edwin conspiratorially. "Don't trust anyone who looks the part. They're clearly trying too hard to be geniune." He cleared his throat, and added, "Whereas I am so unprofessorlike that I couldn't possibly be telling anything but the truth. Why would I lie if it was so unconvincing anyway? I might as well not bother."

He whistled as Forte talked about his family, and said "Jeez, musician family? Classy stuff. Me? Nah, I don't play. Not very musical." Shrugging, he added, "I hear my grandpa could play Mary had a Little Lamb with a tissue and a comb though. Does that count?"

As Forte took out a book, Edwin began to glance briefly back towards his own every now and again. "Me? I like eighties rock, mostly. Styx, all that good stuff. I do listen to some classical, and I dig jazz, you know? I don't know, man, you can ask a guy what his musical tastes are, but most people like some of everything. I'm not really different, I mean, I'll listen to whatever, even the real girly crap." He paused and glanced up at Forte, "And, ask risk of sounding like a hypocrite, what do you enjoy listening to?"

Forte warily eyed the man, attempting to soak in the “words of wisdom” that the so-called professor gave him. Staring at it from one point of view, it made some sense, albeit not much. However, if one flipped that view point, what Edwin attempted to say made little sense at all. It was utter blasphemy. Not believe what one’s eyes saw? If that was true, then what could Forte believe? A conundrum that made him frustrated. He crinkled his eyebrows and frowned as he deeply mulled this over. Eventually he gave up and decided to play along with Edwin. As the man said, he may as well not bother lying about being a professor, and for the time being that was reason enough. No more questions.

“Very well,” agreed the lad with a tired nod. “I’ll trust that you are what you claim to be.”

Another shrug. “Music must run in our veins, I suppose.” He threw the adult an incredulous look, as if to say “Tissue? And a comb? Really?” However, Forte couldn’t stop himself from silently admitting that it did seem a bit impressive. “I suppose it could,” he grudgingly answered.

“Styx? I mainly stick to the more recent bands, so I’m unfamiliar with their work.” Forte casually flipped through the pages of the book once more. “I concur. I listen to a lot of different types of rock, but I’ve also listened to some country and pop, etcetera. However, I’d say my favorite bands would be Three Days Grace, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Green Day, and probably some others I can’t name at the moment.”
