Babies, babies, babies. As if it wasn't bad enough that her parents had had children, her grandparents had had children. And all the eggs had hatched within a couple days of each other and now their six babies - six! - crawling around and wanting to be fed and wanting to play games with her.
And the worst part? The absolute worst part? Four of them were her uncles.
It was all too much, so the first chance she got, she padded out into the forest. She needed some quite time all alone to herself to think. Or not think, as the case may be.

It wasn't too long after Julian had been accepted into the pack that the eggs had hatched. He'd never seen babies up close, so it was a pleasant learning experience to top off his culture shock.
Imagine it, six little ones! And they were all so cute. Of course, he only watched them from a distance, but still.
Julian grew up in the forests surrounding Tarragon as an outsider looking in. With his head buried in the snow, he'd finally gotten the balls to do what needed to be done and here he was, a pack mate. The deep blue male padded around the forest, tempted to break out in song when he saw the other dragon.
He knew the markings well. They were the same as the leader, Yves, was it?, had. But as far as he knew, Yves only had one daughter and this wasn't her. She didn't look happy or like she had a plot in mind so he figured it safe to venture closer. "Uhm...ur...Good day?"

Arbalète stopped and glared at the male who dared intrude on her solitude. Another one! But no, he wasn't a baby, related to a baby, associated with a baby, or related to pretty much anybody at all: he was just the newest addition to the pack. And that was all right, she guessed. She flicked her tail irritably in the snow, wishing she remember his name, but managed a smile nonetheless. It was good to see a stranger, or a near-stranger.
"Not so grand," she said, "but it's all right. I'm sorry, I can't seem to remember your name. I'm Arbalète - you?"

Julian's eyes widened and he gulped. His ears flipped back with uncertainty as his steps slowed to a halt. He thought about leaving, but at the point it woud just seem rude. "The name's Julian."
It was after a time of looking down at his paws that he awkwardly looked back up at her and said," Look, I don't want to be nosey, but whats wrong? Maybe I could help."

What a skittish fellow! Arbalète stared at him while he looked at his paws, dumbfounded. He was unlike anybody she had ever met in her entire life. Even Penamore wasn't that shy! And he belonged to Tarragon, of all packs. What had her grandfather seen in him?
"Oh," she said, "it's nothing really. I just needed a break from all of the babies. Thanks for the offer though." It was sweet of him to have asked, she realized.

A shy smiled curled at Julian's mouth. "I'd say they are a handful. I've never seen a baby before, but they look like a lot of trouble." He finished with a frown. Really, they looked like mini dragons with bare backs. Where did they even come from, anyway?
Looking around, he noticed that the trees were different from last time. "Uhm...would you mind showing me around? I'm kinda new and ....lost."

"They're the first babies I've seen," she admitted, "and there are six of them. Six! Four of them my uncles... and that just feels strange, to have uncles younger than me."
She grinned. "One tree just looks like the other, eh? Look, you're probably paying attention to the wrong signs. There are some landmarks, sure, but until you really get to know what they are, the best thing to do is know where you came from and know where you're going. Don't use tracks, the wind'll cover those up: use the sun. And if it's cloudy, or windy, use other signs. Like... if you came from downhill, uphill..." She stopped. This had been something she'd been trained to do since birth, and she simply didn't know how to explain. "Alright," she said at last, "let me at least show you the inner border. We've got secret signs all along it, so once you know what to look for, you'll at least know you've strayed too far. And until you really get to know the territory here, you probably shouldn't stray off on your own. But I wouldn't worry," she added as she set off, "because the territory isn't as big as both and if you yell loud enough someone is bound to hear you. We run nearly constant patrols, you know."

If the four brothers were her uncles, then that would make her Yves'...granddaughter? Julian thought she might be young by the way she acted.
Julian laughed sheepishly. "You caught me. I know my own territory like the back of my paw, and it's really embarrassing, considering that it's not too far from here." Then again, it wasn't his territory anymore. This was. That just made it worse.
He tried to listen to her, but it all sounded like hogwash to him. "Sounds like a plan. Thanks for showing me around, Arbalète. Your really nice." The male smiled goofily, not really knowing what to act like around a girl. His only neighbor growing up had been ol' dragon Fritters who lived in the valley and he hadn't taught him much besides what plants got you high. Julian padded along behind her. "No, I really didn't know that. Why? Are you afraid someones going to attack or something?"

"If you knew your old territory as well as that, this one shouldn't be hard to learn," she said reassuringly.
He thought she was... nice? Clearly he didn't know her that well! She shrugged uncomfortably and quickly moved on to the question about patrols. "It's a possibility," she said slowly. "We're right at the border, you know. Father's kind of worried about the mountain dragons. I always thought they were a myth, but I saw one, they're real! Really," she said, somewhat defensively, "no joke."

Julian 'pft'ed before he realized it. "Ya right. I've seen them too when I was really little and that was only because I went down there. It's too cold around here for a shrimpy thing like a mountain dragon." Her grandfather was just being paranoid.....Right? Right. Still, she seemed so serious, so he added lightly, "Show me one and I'll take it all back. Promise."

"Are there a lot of them down south?" Arbalète asked, simultaneously fascinated and appalled. She had only seen the one...
"They brought the plague, you know," she said. "That's why we have to be careful. But if you're sure they can't handle the cold..." She grinned, quite pleased. "We're northerners! We're the toughest and the strongest and the best."
"Maybe I'll take you up on that someday," she said archly, "but I should really spend more time near home for a while. I went off on my own for my coming of age... it was lonely." She glanced at Julian out of the corner of her eye, wondering how he could possibly have managed to live so long without a pack. He's either tougher than frozen earth or crazy, she decided.

Wanting to seem knowledgable, Julian puffed himself up proudly and nodded. "Of course I'm sure! And ya, I know. Their kinda dirty." He stuck out his tongue, then laughed. She was so spirited! It got him energized just being around her. Why had he stayed in isolation for so long?
Julian kicked a pebble, a little light dying in his eyes. "It's not so bad once you get used to it. Though, when you come from a pack, I'd say it was pretty hard." He couldn't remember much, but he knew that he hadn't been alone all the time. At one point he'd had a sister. But if he did, where was she now?

"And skinny, bleh!" Arbalète said. She laughed along with Julian, oddly pleased that he agreed with her. He was from outside the pack; who knew what strange beliefs he might hold. Harar had certainly never believed her. She grimaced. Harar, Harar, what a fool. Julian was better.
She immediately felt bad for bringing up the subject. "Well, you have a pack now," she said, "and can stay as long as you want. You're one of us. Didn't gramps tell you? We stick together. Always."
