I hate the Chiarita line so don't even bother, the main issue is I'd want a starter for the main game when switch out to my D/P teams later on for stuff, but I dunno what to start with, mostly because I have no Charmander, Mudkip or Chimchar to start with.

Cyndaquil gets my vote but only because I think that evolutionary line is cooler. Or you could just grab one of them and trade it to your D/P version and start the game again, this time picking the other one.

Tota is better, but is outclassed. At least Cyndaquil has a niche that's not better fulfilled by anything else.

I probably would go for Totodile. He was OP in Silver and Gold. All you need was him to finish the game. By the time you reach the elite four it should be in the 70s

Irish - Guessing you've never played competitively.
Tron - You can beat every non ghost pokemon in the elite 4 with a magikarp. (there are youtube videos of this)

nitnit Tron - You can beat every non ghost pokemon in the elite 4 with a magikarp. (there are youtube videos of this) Flail-hax, go! It's also possible to beat the E4 with a team entirely below level 40 with relative ease. Point is: The E4 suck.

(The fact that making money and buying the best restoration items is made easiest just before the E4 makes it even more ridiculous)

And he is also my favorite Pokemon line too. Anyway, can you post a link? This is something I have to see.

Yeah... Cyndaquil probably is one of the better starters to start off (in my opinion), especially if you had plans to swap for your competitive team later...
... but in all honesty I'm probably going to be dropping my starter from the get-go since I never really likened the johto starters all that much.
