Welcome to the IV Introduction & Breeding Guide! This is another fancy guide that will help aid you in successfully making the ultimate Pokémon!

The term "IV" stands for "Individual Value". These are randomly generated numbers created when you catch or breed a Pokémon. The numbers range from 0 to 31 under each stat.
Example: An example of a Pokémon's IVs would be shown as this: 12/24/15/6/21/1
The first number is the HP IV point, which is 12 in this example.
The second number is the Attack IV point, which is 24 in this example.
The third number is the Defense IV point, which is 15 in this example.
The fourth number is the Special Attack IV point, which is 6 in this example.
The fifth number is the Special Defense IV point, which is 21 in this example.
The sixth number is the Speed IV point, which is 1 in this example.
The higher the number (31 being the max) the higher the stat will be. The lower the number, the lower the stat will be.
Example: Lets say Bidoof was level 50, with no EV points in HP.
A 0 HP IV stat would give it a total of 119 HP points.
a 31 HP IV stat would give it 134 HP points.
The difference in numbers is 31.
Different natures will either increase or decrease a stat's growth by 10%. Some natures do not effect stats at all, and all will grown normally. The HP stat will not be affected by nature regardless of what it is.
Example: The Bold nature will boost the Defense stat and reduce the Attack Stat. A Gentle nature will decrease the Defense stat but increases Special Defense. Let look at just Defense from this.
Bidoof has a Defense IV of 20. Regularly, at level 50 it's Defense stat would be 55.
The Bold nature makes the stat go up to 60
The Gentle nature makes the stat go down to 49
Ok, here is where all this IV talk really comes into play. Breeding can be done from the daycare center. In order to breed you need to depsosit two compatible Pokémon, one male one female. After you've reached a certain amount of steps, the Daycare man will tell you that you've received an egg. The egg will always be within the same family as the same as the female Pokémon.
Note:
*A female Nidoran's egg will be either gender Nidoran once it's hatched.
*An Illumise's egg will be either Illumise or Volbeat once it's hatched.
*A Manaphy's egg will always be a Phione. Phione cannot evolve into Manaphy though.
*Incense compatible Pokémon will always give the pre-evolution of the Pokémon holding the Incense regardless of gender.
Example:
Marill holding Sea Incense will produce Azurill.
There are 15 Egg groups. Dragon, Monster, Ground, Water 1, Water 2, Water 3, Plant, Flying, Indeterminate, Bug, Fairy, Humanshape, Mineral, Gender Unknown, and Ditto. Compatible Pokémon are ones within the same egg group.
*Note: All Pokémon other than Legendaries and pre-evolved can breed with Ditto. Ditto cannot breed with another Ditto.
Attacks can be passed to a baby Pokémon if:
*Both parents know the same move learned by leveling up.
*The father knows a move the baby can obtain via TM.
*The father knows one of the baby's egg moves.
A Pokémon will also inherit IVs from their parents. Three IVs are passed randomly.
*The first can be any of the IVs from either parent.
*The second can be any IV from either parent except HP
*The third IV can be any of the IV from either parent except HP or defense.
Inherited IVs can also overlap. So even though the game may show that the only thing inherited was one IV stat, it actually calculated all three of the same stat.
A new feature in HeartGold & SoulSilver is the ability to manually pass on an IV. This is done by making one of the parents hold a power item. So in total, you can lock two IV points inherited by the parents. The power items' breeding features are listed below:
Power Weight: Locks HP IV passed
Power Bracer: Locks Attack IV passed
Power Belt: Locks Defense IV passed
Power: Lens: Locks Special Attack IV passed
Power Band: Locks Special Defense IV passed
Power Anklet: Locks Speed IV passed
Example: Dragonite and Ditto are breeding. Ditto has 31/x/x/x/x/x and Dragonite has x/31/x/x/x/x. ("x"s can be any number.) Ditto holds a Power Weight and Dragonite holds a Power Bracer. Dratini is born with 31/31/x/x/x/x.
