Do you consider yourself to be a Reconstructionist, or are you more Recon-derived or Recon-inspired?
I think of myself as more Recon-derived, which is one reason I refer to myself as a Heathen rather than, say, Asatruar. I think the lore and historical practice is a great (essential) jumping-off point but that personal religious experience is equally important in influencing my faith.

I'm not sure which to pick from those three. Perhaps derived? I consider myself somewhat mixed between literal reconstruction of what history, archeology, and anthropology (and related fields) tell us they did/believed and modernization of that. For example I don't own or travel on a horse so exact rites relating to that are of no use to me. I do own and drive a car though, so I would try to adapt those rites while staying as close as possible to the original. But if I did own and travel on a horse I would use the original rites.
I prefer to call myself Germanic Pagan, or rarely Heathen. I shy away from the term Asatru (unless I'm doing a Google search because of its connecting materials) because of the connotations that it excludes the Vanir. I include them, so calling myself Asatruar would feel off.

As I understand it, the majority of Asatruar honour those Vanir who are hostages in Asgard. Whether they count as unofficially Aesir because of the tribe with which they live I don't know, but I don't consider the term to exclude the Vanir at all. On the contrary, most Asatru Kindreds' holiday celebrations I've read of seem to honour Freyr on a fair few holidays. Though I can see why one would infer that.

I've been moving more towards Recon-inspired lately. The lore is great and it gives me a good idea of what the gods are like and who they are, and I try to keep things as close to correct as I can, but some things just make me go "Hm. That doesn't feel right to me or it feels sorta off. Let me alter a few things..."
