Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov

We want some nice, in depth discussion this month, guys!

I read that last year. I wasn't really sure what to think of it... It was highly disturbing, but also really well written and even amusing at times. I guess I appreciated the book, and I'm glad I read it, but wouldn't read it again (not for many years anyway).

I've been wanting to read Lolita for a long time, but I have to say this isn't a good month for me to try since I'm doing a eading challenge on another site, and this won't fit in. Myabe I can try a few pages a day or something.

I've not read this yet, but I am going to read it this month smile

I'm sure there are others on the guild that have already read it, but they just haven't posted yet. The idea of the book of the month is to read the book if you haven't already and then discuss. No one seems to be bothering though.

Vladimir Nabokov is my favorite author, and though Lolita isn't my favorite book of his, I love it a lot. I've spent a lot of time analyzing his books and short stories, so I have a lot to stay, but I'll try to keep my post brief.

One of the things I love best about Nabokov is his use of wordplay, and Lolita is filled with it. For instance, Vivian Darkbloom is an anagram for Vladimir Nabokov, there are lots of alliterative names (Hazy Hills, Hobby House, Humbert Humbert, Mesmer Mesmer, etc.), and so many allusions, especially to Poe: Dr. Edgar H. Humbert, P. O. Elphinstone, etc. Of course, one of the more obvious Poe references is Annabelle Leigh. And if you remember, Poe also married his thirteen-year-old cousin, so it fits in with the theme quite nicely. I was speaking to my student advisor about this the other day and he pointed out that P.O. Wace spells out POW with the initials, which could be construed as the sort of prison that Humbert traps himself in.

And then there's the theme of the book itself. Did Nabokov write Humbert in a way that was sympathetic or accusatory? Was he a monster or a victim?

To be honest, I haven't completely made up my mind. It's obvious that Humbert feels very guilty about it all, but Nabokov himself describes H.H. as cruel and hateful.

What do you guys think?
