So I've been using Shinai for a good little bit now, about two years, though I've been using bokken for much much longer. Here are some videos that I've put together of some of the fights and such that we've had. I'd like to hear your thoughts and suggestions on them. I'm also including one that showcases another of our fighters, who goes by the name of Eruandil on here. A collection of our better sword flurries and clashes; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b8BceXgz7tEA collection of our grapples and disarms; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wON2gPE_yAA video showcasing me and my fighting style; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=teAgWDtSWf8A video showcasing Eruandil; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9e9fbiJ73pYIf you can't tell, I'm the hefty lad in the tanktops. So let me know what you think! I'm always open for constructive criticism. If any of you are near the southwest corner of Missouri, I'd love to meet up somewhere, sometime, and have a few rounds. smile

While I personally prefer the bokken as a training weapon, your skill with the shinai (and presumably the weapons it is designed to emulate) is quite impressive, especially practicing without any armor or safety gear (those welts can hurt!)

I'd like to spar with you too, but aye, the distance makes that a wee bit difficult. What part of California are you at? I grew up in Northern Cali, in Humboldt County, the Eureka, Arcata, and Blue Lake area. Spent a goodly amount of time in Redding and Willow Creek as well.

I am fond of the bokken as well, but, as for a training tool, the shinai is much safer and more effective, in my opinion. You can approach the speed of a proper sword swing without killing your opponent or breaking (as many) bones. As for safety gear, I did happen to get a pair of MMA gloves. They seem as though they'll work quite well, padding the hands and knuckles while maintaining the grip. They'll also allow for punches and strikes to be thrown without unduly damaging your opponent. While pain is kind of part-and-parcel to sparring, we all have lives to live outside of the ring, and busting up your sparring partner just for the sake of busting them up is not cool. >_<

I have to ask what your base for your swordsmanship is. I would assume an oriental type considering use of shinai and Bokuto(bokken).
I myself have studied alot of old books dealing with Iaido,Shinkage Ryu, Kendo, and various other forms of Kenjutsu.
