Am I the only one whom new year strikes as a really pointless celebration? For a start, it's a bit too close to christmas, and the only real tradition is drinking far too much and singing Scottish folk songs, badly. The whole thing just seems a ridiculously over-elaborate excuse to get horribly drunk, as if any excuse was needed.
Theres first footing, thats definately a tradition. Passing on the coal is a tradition too, even if it has been updated to textual coal.
And you need an excuse for the street parties, they'd never be allowed any other time of the year. Theres fireworks. Bagpipes. Edinburgh. Glasgow. I have to go to Edinburgh some new years sometime. Its roughly 1/20 of Scotlands population partying there on hogmany.
