What type of Tarot layout do you use?
I draw cards singly to answer my questions.
I draw three cards, past-present-future or a variant I will tell you about.
I use the Celtic Cross spread.
I use a spread chosen from a book that I'll tell you about.
I use a spread that I made up myself. Let me tell you about it!
  Layout? I just draw cards.
Hmmmmmm, let me think about this.

I'm starting this thread with a poll so that readers have a spot to put the practice they have coming into the discussion. I wonder how many people will still work with the cards the same way when they move on?

I started with the Celtic Cross layout, back in the day with my original Swiss IJJ Marseilles-style deck. The cards came with a folding sheet that you dealt the cards onto. It didn't work for me, probably why it took me a number of further years to come into my divinatory abilities.

I really recommend "Power Tarot" for a good discussion of tarot spreads and some useful variations meant to give you information quickly.

Nowadays I mostly deal cards and I'm especially fond of a layout I call a pathworking: what are the steps I need to take to get from 'here' to 'there'?

I just did my first reading, ever, with Amy Zerner and Monte Farber's Tarot Discovery Kit. I spent a few hours giving one-card readings to my friends, just to kill time today, but then I did a Celtic Cross spread at the end of the day. The results were all what I expected for the question I wanted answered, and apparently all of my one card draws had the answers that my friends were hoping for. This is a good start in learning the Tarot, I think.

Yes! fabulous start!
One thing you need when doing divination is feedback - did I read this correctly? did what I predict come true? did I 'see' the secret? did I answer the question with a probable outcome?

So often, when I've read for strangers (or even friends), it has been the look of wonderment come over their faces that kept me going. I have journals for my own readings and revisit them to 'check my answers.'

That sounds like a great idea, havenne! I think I'll use one of my spare notebooks for that. As a generally antisocial person, I'm actually amazed that I gave readings, as when I got through reading my one friend in class, a majority of the remaining group on the pre-holiday crowd crowded around me and started asking me to give them readings. I'd always thought that people were exaggerating about how draining divining could be, but I'm still tired from it. It was really fulfilling, somehow, though.

yes, I find it tiring, too. It takes work and concentration and giving of the self, sometimes in a not very obvious way. I have also found that I don't always have control over the message that comes through or the 'answer' isn't one of the expected options. You find out curious things.

Honestly, the best readers often aren't the social folks. We are sensitive to others thus tend to keep our distance. heart
