Are you an avid importer?
Yeah! Almost all my games are imports!
I dabble, especially when it comes to Tales!
I have one or two. I usually wait for English releases.
English is the only way to go! Are you people nuts?!
  Sonna! Sonna bakana!!

Over the years it's become synonymous with the Tales series. Wether for lack of an English release or the utter butchering of said release, it's a necessary evil for some and a joy for the rest of us. Here is where one can discuss the trials and tribulations of importing Tales games and ask seasoned vets for advice on shopping for and setting up imports.

Recent Releases

Tales of Vesperia (テイルズ オブ ヴェスペリア)
Console: Xbox 360
Release: August 7th, 2008

What Works?

Super Nintendo/Famicom: X
Additional: The actual chips are the same but the cartridges are not the same dimensions, so disfiguring your SNES's game slot would allow you to play imports. There are now also original mods for purchase.

PlayStation: X
Additional: There are very minimalistic approaches that require very few parts and a swap disc to work.

PlayStation 2: X
Additional: Swap Discs, Mod Chips, Fliptop Mods... Google it.

Xbox 360: X
Additional: As far as I know, the 360 is region locked and unable to play Vesperia. I've looked around and found that there are some exceptions to the rule it seems.

Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS: O
Additional: Nintendo's handhelds have thus far always been free of region restraint. They're compatible with all games.

PlayStation Portable: O
Additional: The PSP is 100% region free and compatible with all games.

50/50

So far the only official game to support English text with Japanese voice overs has been Tales of Destiny for PlayStation. Counting the unofficial, Tales of Phantasia has been translated into English both on the SNES and PlayStation and the same team is working on a possible Tales of Destiny 2 English patch.

Any opinions, additions and corrections are always welcome. Playing should be a fun experience and you could help make it one!

I've never tried the other two import sites... Mainly because I trust Play-Asia a little too much. Play-Asia does have some really high prices on some of the games though... Is it rarity, or is it just random?

Importing ToD cost more than imporing ToD2, and ToD is just a PSX game...

Same here, but I've heard good things about the others.

I'd love to import all of the Japanese Tales game and play them... But like I've probably said on other threads, I can't read/speak/understand Japanese at all. All I picture that language as is confusing little line-ish symbols that I feel I could never understand. -_-;; (...I seem to like listening to Japanese music though. O..o)

The only flaw with that, is that the PS3 WON'T be backwards compatible. Weird, huh?

Is that picture (your signature) from the PS2 cutscene or are they really making the anime. I've never seen that picture before.

Cutscene most likely...

Though there are now very big RUMORS that there's going to be an anime... stare

OK, short if importing a system itself, what needs to be done to play imports? It's one of many things on my "to-do" list, and is slowly creeping its way up. (Still can't beat out fixing the drainpipe or repainting the living room yet.)

And, presumably, if I buy a Japanese PS2, I can't play my US games on it, correct?

Correct, Japanese PS2 is region-protected for Japanese PS2 games... or so I've heard, it's possible that they're nicer over there and don't believe in region-protection, but better safe than sorry.

As for playing Japanese PS2 games, it really depends on what type of PS2 you have.

V5-V11s can be modded to do cool stuff, but the recent slims (V12 and V13) haven't been fully figured out yet as far as modding. Either way, I'd still go with Boot Discs... they feel safer to me. (V12 and V13 would be the ones that would be deemed "Boot Discs only")
