The Beginning of Chapter 1

No chapter title as of yet. Chapter unfinished.

Ferius lit from the highest branch of the fruit tree he was perched upon, and dove
off into the night. He much enjoyed the familiar scent of the wind in his
face, the jostle of his wings as he hit some mild turbulence in the air.
Ferius was a fruit bat, and he hadn't eaten in days. Spotting a mango tree,
he folded his wings and let the cold night air rush through his fur as he
made his long decent, faster and faster until at the last possible moment,
he pulled up, landing gracefully on the branch next to a rather small and
withered mango.

Is this all that is here? he thought to himself. He looked around for
firmer, juicier fruits and came across an odd imprint in the tree branch.
Curious as to what had caused this, he peered in for a closer look. The
disturbance was shaped like the sun, with rivets all around, forming the
rays. Ferius wondered if this was a sign from the Sun itself, trying to tell
him something. But he couldn't figure out what. All his life, he'd heard
stories, stories about how the Sun would one day disappear forever. Not that
it made much of a difference to the bats. Although, talk of the Sun always
had Ferius interested.

A rustle in the leaves behind him made Ferius jump. "Oh, it is only you." he
said, as his childhood friend Perephrus emerged from the vegetation, a tint
of yellow juice on his lips. "I've been searching for you, Prince Ferius,"
Perephrus bowed low in respect, "Your father, he is very ill. He wishes to
have an audience with you immediately."

Perephrus had a white stripe of fur across his nose, and his wings were a tad bigger than Ferius' own. He was also missing a claw.

Ferius frowned. He had suspected that something grave had occurred during
his leave of absence. "For goodness sake, Perephrus, how many times must I
ask you to call me Ferius? I do not much admire the title of Prince."
Recognizing his friend's common resentment, Perephrus grinned, and executed
an exaggerated bow, short of falling off balance from laughing.

"But seriously, my dear friend, your father is very sick."
Ferius didn't suspect for an instant that his friend was lying. He nodded, motioning for Perephrus to
lead the way, although he already knew where they were going. Anicatum,
Kingdom of the Bats.
