Taken from another site: ...Of course, fanfiction probably goes back as far as literature; even such luminaries as John Stuart Mill contributed unauthorized, original stories set in a fictional universe. Before medieval French troubadours were shipping Launcelot and Guinevere, the ancient Greeks were writing plays about relationships between characters in The Iliad. In Plato's Symposium one character complains that a fanfic play by Aeschylus got the characterization of Achilles and Patroclus wrong.

...

The distinction between Fanfic and original fiction, as we know it today, is largely created by modern copyright law; much of classical writing is actually "fanfiction" based on older sources. The major distinction between fanfic and a story inspired by another story is that the story a fanfic is based on has one or more "official" versions, usually owned by a company, a creator, or both. Thus, things like The Infancy Gospel of Thomas, a piece of biblical apocrypha featuring Angry!Uber!Baby Jesus, or variations on Arthurian legend where there is no Holy Grail and Lancelot's affair with Guenivere never happens, would not "count" by this definition.

....Post your thoughts. Personally I agree and think copyright law in a way is killing creativity razz

I cannot believe I did not notice this thread sooner. I could not agree more and it is wonderful to see my own (rather "our", it seems, hehe) thoughts validated so eloquently!

While I agree that copyright law is important, I believe that sometimes it is taken too far, or in a way that is positively petty. I've read texts online - namely here on Gaia - where the writing of fanfiction is likened to the killing of one's child! My immediate answer to those arrogant people, who apparently believe they're on some sort of higher level that other mortals could never comprehend their creations, is that children grow and sooner or later they leave the nest and meet the world. When you make something available for others to read, that very something is no longer your something, because the readers' interpretative brain has made it uniquely theirs.

Maybe the biggest issue is that people do not like to mix reputable literary works like the ones you mentioned above with the kind of writings you see on the internet made by immature teens, and thus the term fanfiction is relegated to labelling "the trash". Any comment that those higher works are anything but original is happily omitted or taken as an interesting curiosity, but often authors of online fanfiction receive absolutely no credit for their creations on the basis that they're "plagiarising". Isn't that being snobbish and kind of prejudiced?
