I have a very hard time thinking of UU as a religion. After all, people who are of various religions identify as Unitarians. Can you explain how it can be considered a religion in its own right?
I mean, if you told me you lived by seven principles, I still wouldn't know what religion you were. You might also be an atheist, or you might be a theist. You could be an animist, a pantheist, agnostic, polytheist, monotheist. And none of those are even religions.

I've never REALLY gone by the exact word "religion" because... well, I just don't care. xd A lot of people are so picky at definitions that I don't bother. It's just a passing term, I guess.
Well, the point I was trying to get across was how people hear that you're an athiest and scream "DEVIL CHILD!" with complete disregard for the fact that you could be waaaaaay more accepting of a lot of people and things than they will ever be.
But yeah. Unitarian Universalism really isn't a religion in itself, just a... sub-religion, maybe?

I just have a problem with the word atheist a bit. I still use it as it's the closest to what I am, which is basically no-religion at all. But I just hate that ignorant immoral connotation that comes with it.

SuchSweetSadism I just have a problem with the word atheist a bit. I still use it as it's the closest to what I am, which is basically no-religion at all. But I just hate that ignorant immoral connotation that comes with it.
It can be so easily altered.
I was reading a dictionary, looked up Atheism, and it said
"Belief that God does not exist."
That kind of scared me.

My friends family identify as Universal Unitarians, and I really dont consider it a religion.
And being an Atheist does carry a connotation...So I guess, call yourself what makes you most comfortable? I dont know, I have no opinion sweatdrop

When they hear of Atheism, they don't think of it simply as the definition but of science and other things which will tend to twist the definition.
If your talking about the below statement, it was because it said God, not gods. It made it seem like the authors were religious which was kind of frightening in a way.

I've never heard of that. I would think of it as a Naturistic {is that even a word???} religion, which I guess it is. Do you believe in any spirits or gods? And even if not, I would call it a religion because you believe in nature.
I guess I would probaly be called a devil child by christians. I know my mom isn't happy and she doesn't even know my religion XD I don't really either, but I just leave it alone when it comes to her. But I do have a friend at work that I can talk to about Astrology and Tarot and all the other stuff =^_^=

dimentia44 No one knows what I'm talking about when I say I'm a Unitarian Universalist. I try to explain how we have 7 principals we live by, and how they involve taking care of the earth, treating everyone equal regardless of gender, religion, sexuality, or otherwise. But after I explain all of this to them, the only thing they can ever think to say is, "Umm... so you're an Atheist?"Is that really the most defining part of my religion? Will my hope and love for life always be overshadowed by not believing in God? I feel as though I am destined to go through life being seen as the freak who is a white American but STILL does not believe in a God (gasp! How is such a thing even possible?! rolleyes )I have such amazing connctions with the people in my congregation, but once I step outside the church, it's like I live in a whole different world than the people around me... Sounds like being a Secular Humanist. I'm guessing they're the same thing just with different names?
