PART THREE: WATCH YOUR GRAMMAR!+ Avoiding Bad GrammarOne of the things I absolutely hate is bad grammar in any story. I am not saying I am perfect, but I am not going to have bad grammar in my story. So let me give you a few tips on avoiding bad grammar.
- Spellcheck! It's a simple thing to do.
- Get someone to beta for you.
- Write your chapter, then go over it, checking your grammar.
Here is an example of bad grammar.
"Hey Fred! Wut you doing?" Katie asked.
"Hi Katie. I'm checkin my phone calls, you?" Fred questioned back
That is an obvious example. Please, do not do this. I will have to critique harshly if you are one of these people. I don't think you are though.
+ Starting DialogueSo how do you start dialogue? It's easy. Here's an example.
"Hi Fred! How are you doing?" Katie asked.
"Fine. How are you?" Fred replied.
Easy right? I recommend that you don't do the following...
"Hey Fred! How are you?" Katie asked. "Fine. How are you?" Fred replied.
It would be easier for the readers and you to separate the sentences.
+ Grammar RulesIt's obvious that if you follow the rules of grammar that you will be able to turn out better stories. If you have issues with grammar or grammar rules, go to
