So, I've been successful with K'nuckles' forced socialization. 2 sessions so far for the 20 minutes and she's getting a little easier to hold.

Anyway, I was just wondering if shivering is something that needs to be looked at.

I'm thinking it's just cause maybe she's scared, but she hasn't poo'd or pee'd on me in these instances.

Also, at points she grooms herself and then grabs my thumb and licks it a lot. Am I going on the right track with this?

Never really had to deal with rats that didn't like to be held much.

D'awww. Sounds exactly like she's grooming you. smile Sounds like the right track to me. Plus no poop is a great sign! How old is she? I know one of my rats wasn't socialized properly before we got her, and because she was already a full grown adult (almost a year old) when we got her it took her months to fully adjust. I don't know if it is a common reaction, but the biggest psychological challenge for her seems to be that never being handled made her terrified of heights. Even now, almost a year after being handled daily you can still sometimes see the doubt in her eyes during the very first moment of being picked up. So maybe watch to see if that's the case with your rat, too. And if it looks like it is, then see if you can minimize any heights involved until she fully trusts that you won't drop her.

Just to double-check, if you think she's nervous, then are you giving something for her to hide under while she's socializing with you? For example, if you're sitting/laying then are you putting a blanket over both of you? Or if you're standing, are you wearing something like a hoodie where she can hide in the pocket alongside your hand?

sounds like shes coming along great! I got a boy from petco about a week ago (sunday will be two weeks) that was destined to be a feeder...he shook a little at first, but i just threw on my hoodie and let him pal around for awhile until he got used to me. today, he let me trim his nails...something my girls still wont let me do. (their six months old and came from a breeder)

seeing as shes not only grooming herself, but you as well, you're on the right track wink

Aww! Sounds like she lurves you :p My ratties try to groom me all the time, whether it's styling and eating my hair, licking me, or trying to chew off my fingernails...>.> Plus, if she's not scared enough to uhr, release herself, that's very good!
Maybe the shivering is bruxing, as well?

I've tried to let her run around me in the past, but that ended up with her jumping off me at the halfway point so, I instead hold her close to my chest while laying down and holding her securely, but not to tight.

We both think she's about 6 months old. She's kind of bigger than Revolver.

At first I thought the shivering is bruxing cause I hear a lot of teeth chatter and thats the only thing that came to mind when she started to lick my thumb.

But, I wasn't totally positive. But thanks for your guys' insight and comments! I appreciate it!
