As some of you may, know, and others may not, Sagi's graduation is right around the corner. I will be receiving my B.A in Applied Mathematics (and Theater Arts minor) on June 12th 2010. Well, that's actually just the commencement ceremony. The diploma doesn't come in the mail for a long time after that.

Anyway, on to the point, I received an e-mail basically stating that any senior can make a speech at graduation, as long as they submit a good enough speech (basically I have to compete against all the other seniors for a shot to speak). And I started thinking that this would be really cool if I could do it, and surprise all my friends and family. So I have till April 16th to submit the best speech I can.

So here's where you guys come in. I want ideas. What would you guys want to say at your graduation? What would you want to hear? I don't want anyone to try to write the speech for me, just help me brainstorm ideas. Then when I get something of a rough draft down, you guys can help critic it, and make it better.

Here's the criteria:

Creativity and originality
Upbeat/inspirational tone
Clarity of message
Connect with the audience

5 minute maximum

What do you guys say? Do you want to help me out with my little dream?

Hmmm. Well all I'm fairly horrible at public speaking, but I always chose my wording wisely when I talk in person. Hmmm. Maybe talk about your experiences in college that are unique and helped you over come challenges?

A bit cliché, I think. Maybe write a speech about the horrors you've endured during college (humorous stuff like running out of toilet paper, or getting into a political argument with your English teacher, or something like that) and make sure to use a lot of humor. A humorous speech is usually the best kind. Oh, and remember, all speeches should be like a woman's skirt; long enough to cover the subject, but short enough to keep it interesting.

But sometimes speeches are also short, and very pleasing, like a girls skirt. >.> The man who spoke before Abraham Lincoln spoke for two hours, and Lincoln's speech blew it out of the water in the two or so minutes he spoke.

well it's gonna be short, like I said at the max it can only be 5 minutes. I'm just not sure how to start it right now. Any ideas about opening sentences?

From what I've done with speeches in the past is by starting out that can put a smile on people's faces which keeps them intrigued for the rest of the speech.

im always told to use a little joke, but a good story that ties to your speech will work fine.

You could start with: "Hey audience, you dropped something ....... My Jaw!!"

Choose an Item that Defines the School. Describe it's best points, and mention it's low points.

For example, I am a specific wooden sword (I suggest you pick something more general). It's been broken twice, and mended once. This describes my past well. I am the mere image of something greater than myself, yet I still hold significance to a select few.

Begin with this, detail three or four points, and use them to base the rest of your speech.

In my case (This is a speech about how I came to be as I am now.) I would go something akin to, "When I was young, I grew up practically without a father. When I hit fourth grade, not only did two of my best friends move away, I began to become the target of bullies. These two things served to annihilate my self-esteem. But, I moved on." That was the Twice Broken, once Mended thing.

After a while, cut out the metaphor, get serious, and illustrate what really defined your experience at your school. End on a positive word.

Thus, my idea.

ok here's the rough draft of my speech, it doesn't really have a conclusion yet, and i'm pretty sure it's not long enough... I'm also trying to find more people who will tell me what they learned >.<, otherwise I'll probably just make it up... but let me know what you guys think;

Quote:
Today, we sit here, students ready to graduate, people ready to take their next step in life. Within each one of you lies a dream of the future, some of you will continue to graduate school and further your education, while others will go make the next effort toward your dream careers. When we stepped on to this campus, all those years ago, we were taking the first step to fulfilling those dreams. Now that we reached the finish line it’s time to look back at the things that we learned, and make sure that we carry those things with us wherever we go in our lives.

I wanted to express today, not just what I had learned, I wanted my words to communicate the thoughts and feelings of everyone here, so that I could represent you. So I asked my friends, my peers, people I knew, and people I didn’t, what knowledge they were going to take with them to their new adventures in life, and what they had learned while they were here. These were some of the responses I got:

“If UCSD taught me anything, it would be that hard work, endurance, more hard work and perseverance will pay off in the future.”

“I learned to never give up, especially not when you are behind.”

This is especially important because we are not just as UCSD graduates, but as graduates of Thurgood Marshall College, the college that prides itself by not only creating scholars, but also citizens. TMC stands for academic excellence, community, diversity, public service, social equality and justice. We have been challenged with the opportunity to take our knowledge and use it use it for the benefit of others. After you leave today, and for the rest of your lives, you will find that opportunities to help your community will present themselves each and every day, and it is our duty to grasp those occurrences. While you attended this school, many of you became citizens of the UCSD community, whether it was organizing a community cleanup, participating in a rally, or even helping a friend with a homework assignment. As Thurgood Marshall Students, I know that you will continue to recognize the spirit of community that is represented on our logo. The picture depicts three hands each grasping the one in front by the wrist, and the meaning is clear; we must acknowledge that without the help of others we would not be where we are today. And now that we have succeeded we must turn around, and help others succeed as well so that they can continue the cycle.

Thurgood Marshall once said, “None of us got where we are solely by pulling ourselves up by our bootstraps. We got here because somebody -…- bent down and helped us pick up our boots.” I want you all take a moment to think about all the people who helped you get here today. Whether it was your family, your friends, or both, none of us could have made it without their guidance, without someone who would believe in us even when we could no longer believe in ourselves. Think of all the times that you weren’t sure if you would succeed, and yet somehow, in spite of everything, you all did. How each one of you accomplished your goals is not a mystery, the answers are behind you. Everyone who came here today had an impact on one of your lives. Think about what they did for you, and how now it’s your turn to go and help somebody else.

I think it is written awesomely. Not all you need is the right inflections in your voice and to slam a fist on the desk and or varying powerful motions every once in a while and bam perfect speech.
