Now that Spring is officially here I thought I would put up a thread for Beltaine, that most, ahem, lively of pagan holidays! I'm not much of a Maypole dancer, myself, though I've participated in a few events. I drew away from the symbolism though there are definitely specific magical workings to do at this time.....
Anyway, the Beltaine thread is open!

Beltaine is an interesting festival. Yes, it is another Spring celebration but the timing was set by a natural occurrence, at least according to a celtic NeoDruid group I worked with for awhile. It seems Beltaine was celebrated, I seem to remember, when the Elderberry bloomed. I don't know if this was coincidental or whether the flower of this shrub played a part in the rituals; I don't recall ever hearing what the association was.
Anyway, Beltaine is definitely a time to party and let loose.

Indeed. I must prepare. But I have to be careful because Cinco de Mayo is not a few days after it. I have to ration my partying. Also, I have mother's day and my dad's birthday in may. Therefore, may tends to become the most stressful month for me next to December.

sorry it is stressful. I tend to be away at a conference over Beltaine (real life events intrude) so I don't often get to participate in ritual on the day itself. I have gotten inventive about the type of spiritual activities I indulge so all is not lost.

Beltaine is like an opening into brightness, much as I think of Full Moons. It is another divinatory turning point, good for exploring what is coming into being....flowering, if you will. My Spring is behind, due to excessive rain, so I'm lagging a bit with my High Day, as well.

My Beltaine was pretty awesome, apart from the fact that I have to hide things from my mom. I mean, she knows about my being a Wiccan, and she seems to accept it, but every time I bring it up, she seems really uncomfortable and avoids the topic. She knows what Wicca is, but she's Christian, and is going to worry about me no matter what I change my religion to. Of course, I kinda prefer it that way. It gives me more privacy, and also makes the rituals more realistic to the burning times, where people had to hide. It just seems more authentic. So, now that I've ranted... How were your Beltaines?
