I've been interested in fairies/spirits/demons/whatever else one might call them for quite some time, and recently have been writing a few short stories under the title "Fairy Nights".
One theory of mine, which may be completely wrong but here it is: What are called fairies by some, spirits or demons by others, even 'magical creatures,' I think to be all the same thing/same type of thing - a spiritual/magical being, which could all fit under the category of 'Fairy,' with various types (such as dryads, succubi, etc). There seem to be spiritual beings like this found in cultures from all over the world, and sometimes certain beings with different names from different places seem to have similar or same characteristics: for example, the succubi who are female demons which suck the lifeforce out of men through sexual means, and the leannan sidhe/si of Ireland which are supposed to latch on to a man, grant him artistic abilities (muse-like), and then drain his lifeforce. Both are female draining the lifeforce of males.
Anyways, have you heard the saying "The more I know, the more I realise how little I know"? I used to think I knew a lot about folklore, but I know nothing. A bit about Irish, more English and much Greek, that's it. So I thought a topic on fairies/spirits would be interesting. Can anyone tell me more about fairies?

The Leannnan Sidhe are particularly tricky. If I recall correctly, the man they take interest in must prove to love them, or some sort of dire consequence takes place. (sorry, it's been a while since I've researched the topic.)
Particularly in much of the Irish origin folklore, there are bounds and bounds of faerie like beings. The Leannan is actually just one example of many, many Sidhe. As well, there are numerous numbers of "species" if you will, beyond the Sidhe, but similar.
Faeries aren't my strong subject unfortunately, but they are an excellent one.
Having a strong interest in faeries, you may want to look into trolls as well. I know Iceland is suppose to have a very rich history on the subject; in this case being very similar to faeries. I tend to stay away from the topic of trolls though, because they've always rather.. creeped me out. Who knows though, no day like today to dismantle that mindset.
As well, most all cultures have numerous beings of such examples, so the knowledge here is practically endless. biggrin
Never discount what you know either, because there's always more to know! 3nodding

Interesting! Good to know. I have found out that the sidhe or si are more humanoid (in size and shape) than English flower fairies, and that there are many kinds. It is possible that many of the old gods and goddesses were actually sidhe, or vice verse I can understand being leery of trolls - they can be scary, depending on which story you hear haha. As I mentioned in the first post, I kind of put all those beings together under the same category (called Fairies for lack of anything better to call them. I suppose I could just call them spirits? But if they have corporeal bodies...arg xp ). Well: trolls, goblins, pixies, elves, dryads, bean sidhe, leannan sidhe, kamikakushi, yousei, youkai, deamons and demons, windigo, etc. anything that might be considered supernatural or paranormal, since they all seem to be magical/supernatural creatures. Ghosts and Lake monsters aside, since they aren't/don't seem to be that type of being.
And now on to the Kelpie! A water horse that will drag you into the water and eat you, though if I remember correctly if you can grab hold of his bridle you can tame him (similar to the leprechaun, if you catch him you get one wish?) I want to know about djinn. It was mentioned in one or two books I had read, fictional stories, so I only know that it is supposed to be a type of demon. That's it.

The only fairy Iv ever seen was during my time in New Orleans. Other than that I'm afraid that's my only sighting.
Honestly the only thing spiritual about my life are the odd assortment of things that make it across my desk some days.
That's about it..
