The sound of thunder rumbled across the dreary sky. The weatherman predicted scattered showers, and it’ll clear up by noon. It was 6’clock now, and still no sign of improvement. People were ducking into shops, trying to avoid the impending rain. I walked down the street with my hands in my pockets lost, in my own trail of thoughts. The dead voice off my mother went through my head. I’ve been thinking about her a lot lately, maybe it’s because of my recent promotion in Team Rocket, maybe it’s because of the success off yesterday’s smuggling of Pokémon from Hoenn. I lifted my head toward the sky as a flock of Pidgey flew over head. It started pouring when I ran toward the Pokémon Center.

One way or another, the skies over Lavender Town seemed more disheartening than even on a normal day, and Ace Vendetta let out a prolonged sigh as he meandered into town. Typically at this time of day, the Gym Leader of Fuchsia City was at his gym, training and keeping his skills sharp. That, or taking a leisurely break around town, or even enjoying a respite within the Safari Zone. But he had locked up his gym the day before and taken the trip here, to the Pokemon graveyard. He took the same trip here every year, on the same day, with the team he'd forged since his arrival. As usual, he walked with the majority of his team in their Pokeballs, the only one walking out with him being his Tyrogue, Lock. Lock had never really found his niche in terms of fighting, and so had yet to evolve. However, Ace never pushed the little Scuffle Pokemon; when the time was right, Lock would know what to do, and if it didn't, then Ace could always use a sparring partner that wouldn't be likely to bulldoze him into the ground. The little fighter looked up at his trainer with a small smile, but Ace did not meet his gaze. It was that day of the year again, and even the support of his closest friends would bring no comfort. Almost six years ago, on this very day, Ace had been separated from his homeland of Unova. On that day, he'd lost his trusted team of Pokemon, his best human friend, Rhin Edmonds, and even his right eye. He had never gotten up the strength to try andmake his way back - he knew he couldn't take it if he returned only to find Rhin and the rest of his friends from the rebellion had been killed, imprisoned, or suffered some other terrible fate. So he'd taken to coming to Lavender Town once a year and lighting incense, in their memory. It was really all he could think to do. Plus, this was just about the only vacation either of them were used to - Ace was never much of one for travel, only going to Johto once every six months or so to stock up on special poffins for special occasions.
He leaned down near a small pile of stones on the edge of town. It never failed; every year, he'd have to pile them back on top of one another before lighting the incense. This was his little memorial, not just to his friend or his Pokemon...but to the life he'd had. The changes he'd wanted to make, the opportunities lost, and the promises he'd never been able to keep. Every year he did this, and yet it never got easier. Lock looked up at Ace, and tugged lightly on the long sleeve of his coat. "Rogue, ro, ty..."
Ace was staring at the make-shift grave, unable to think of anything but the regret. There was little he could have done at the time, of course - there he'd been, staring down the legendary Cobalion, his Pokemon team down for the count. When the Iron Will Pokemon used its Sacred Sword attack, Ace was sent careening over the perilous cliffs, plunging to the rocks below. Sheer luck had saved his life. That wasn't what he regretted. More than anything, he regretted not having the strength to try and return, to see if maybe his Pokemon, maybe even Rhin, had survived that encounter. He'd wanted to; he'd thought about it countless times. But something had always held him back, though he never knew what. He sighed again, then turned his gaze to Lock. He managed a weak grin, and gave his comrade a thumbs-up. "Yeah...I'm fine, buddy. It just, y'know...gets to me is all." Lock nodded in understanding, and they both turned back to the memorial. Ace pondered, then said to the Tyrogue, "Lock...I think I'd like to just sit here for a bit. You alright with that?" The Tyrogue gave his trainer a look, as if to say, Do you even need to ask? "...yeah, I know. Same as every year. Thanks, Lock." Together, the pair dropped to the ground, assuming a cross-legged seating position, and just let their thoughts wander, allowing the day to pass around them. ▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂✚

He looked up and shielded his eyes, looking at a small batch of grey clouds that had burst open. It seemed as though they had been sitting for a long time, but when Lock saw the incense they'd lit, he was somewhat surprised to see that the end of the stick was still smoldering. He looked up to Ace, tugging on his sleeve again. "Ty...rooogue, ty." the diminuitive Pokemon said, having no strong desire to get drenched.
Ace's eyes remained closed, but he smiled lightly, and nodded. "Aye, alright, buddy. We can get going. Just try to travel close to my coat until we get out of town, and you should be able to avoid most of the rain." Ace rose to his feet, pulling his hood up around his head to shield himself as well. Once out of Lavender, it was essentially a straight line back to Fuchsia - along one road, from Route 12 down through Route 15, then back home. He peered down at Lock and nodded. "Thanks, pal." The pair of them walked away from the small pile of stones, making their way south. Almost as soon as they'd gotten a short distance away, a falling drop of rain landed on the incense stick, snuffing out the lingering ember that was lasted this long. {{Exit to Fuchsia City}} ▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂✚
