In my travels of various places I have come across various witches, many of them female and a few of them of the male species. The male witches tend to be homosexual and this has always puzzled me. Yes, I have met heterosexual witches, but not as many homosexual witches. I myself am homosexual and I practice witchcraft.

Why is this? Is it just through my narrow scope that I see these homosexuals? Are they drawn to me in some strange fashion?

Or do homosexuals have a high percentage of wanting to practice witchcraft?

Thoughts? Observations? Rebuttals?

I wonder if your observations are limited?
I've met far more straight male witches than homosexual ones. Many within a couple where the woman first discovered witchcraft.

I was just thinking about this today on my drive to work. I don't know whether it's that the pagan community attracts people of different sexualities (is there a better term?), or that the pagan community is frequently defined as being different sexuality-friendly.

I think the pagans I've met have been all over the map of sexuality.

It's probably that I am just drawn to homosexual men...

/shrug Just an observation I have made that I pondered about.

I think I would also have to say I know more gay witches than straight. But that might be because I know more gay people than straight.

To the one that I serve

In general it seems that I've run into a mixture of hetero, homo, or bi.

Your observation sure makes sense though Angus.
Most of the male witches I've come across online seem to be homosexual or bisexual.
I think the nature of paganism allows for it though. It's eclectic in nature and accepting of anyone. Some Gods within paganism are bisexual aren't they?
There are no requirements and no boundaries. Perfect for anyone who "falls outside the norm".

Sample bias, perhaps? Most I've met are straight. It would be interesting to do a study, though. It might be that men willing to explore alternative religions are more willing to admit alternative sexualities, or perhaps to describe themselves as further along Kinsey's scale than they might have.

To the one that I serve

well so you can have an accurate standing:

yes-bisexual-female

I've met a mixture of sexualities. Some straight some gay some bi. It never seems to matter. I think you may find more openly (insert sexuality here) at pagan gatherings due to the nature of lack of taboos regarding sexuality (except for things like bestiality)

That's probably what it is.

I seriously have met very few straight male witches, though. Maybe I have a gay homing beacon on my person that only homosexual witches can see...hmm...

I do agree, San, it would be very interesting to do a study. Maybe I can set one up on witchvox or something.

The recent group I've been involved with actually has an unusually high proportion of homosexual males also, but previous groups I was with did not have this character. Still it wouldn't surprise me if there is a higher percentage of alternative sexualities in certain new religious movements in general simply because we don't condemn them for what they are.

...known colloquially as gaydar...for witches? Gaywitchdar?

Have you considered that in human development there is significant overlap between sexual exploration and spiritual exploration?

it may also be because people in the gay community are more likely to be rejected, or even condemned by their churches, so look for alternatives.

Also, people 'outside of society' tend to congregate, and be more open minded

It's also true that many old pagan religions didn't really distinguish between homosexual and heterosexual, or it didn't matter much. Take the Greeks for example.

And on the opposite side as my first argument, a pagan is more likely to be in touch with their own nature and not try to repress it *shrug* just from experience and some general knowledge.....but then, I've never actually known another pagan well enough to know so....
