What exactly does the word girlfriend mean to you? As in, how close would you have to be with someone before you started considering them your girlfriend, what are some of the key differences between a girlfriend and other types of relationships? (F buddies, friends, lovers, partners, beloveds, etc.)
Your categories for relationships?
Anything tangentially related welcome as well.

I ask because of a conversation I had earlier, at this point yesterday, and it made me really think about it. I never had before, it had just always been whoever I had an agreement to use that label with and agreeing to use that label usually just meant I wanted to make out with them. It also carried a requirement for fidelity* and honesty to my mind.

I still feel that the most important part is agreeing to use that label for your relationship and now also having a long discussion about what exactly it means to everyone involved.

*I define fidelity as faithfulness to the stated or implied agreements of the relationship, which may not always be monoamory.

Maybe I was kind of confusing?

Just, when you hear the word "girlfriend" (or "boyfriend") what images come to mind?

To me, it's someone you can trust and hold in confidence.

Someone you pay special attention to when they talk about their dreams, wishes, hopes, fears. Because you want to make their dreams come true and destroy their fears and demons.

The first person you share your glories and your wounds with.

To me it means intellectual and emotional intimacy.

Someone you go out with, you'd do nearly anything just to see her smile.

It's someone you giggle and blush with and maybe dress up for.

Maybe someone you want to dress up,
give them random small gifts like a sweet note or a dandelion.

Someone who's on your mind, all the time.

Someone you tell the truth to, no matter what.

I think it's important to consider this, otherwise this can happen.

I'm not going to fail as soon as you close your eyes- and you know it.

I almost classify 'girlfriend' as the starting stage of a relationship.
-Friendship is platonic.
-F buddies (friends with benefits) by definition is someone you can have sex with, with little to no emotional entanglements...and that's how I see it.
-Girlfriend suggests that you are both trusting and loyal to each other by your own standards, and are in an early form of a possibly serious relationship.
-Lovers, to me, is almost like a friend with benefits- however there are some differences. To say that you are someones lover implies that there really is emotional meaning behind your actions, however it does not always mean that you're in a solid relationship.
-Partners could be a few things, but the definition of a partner is a friend or someone who shares a common interest and wishes to achieve a common/linked goal. That being said, it logical would mean a participant in an intimate/romantic relationship...Maybe even two people looking to be married.
-Beloved can mean many things to many people since the simple definition is someone you hold dear and close to your heart...so this might actually be one of the things that can tie in in use with some of the other terms, and is frequently used as a pet name of sorts.

Girlfriend to me not only means that it's a young stage of a relationship, but I also expect her to be loyal to me. If it's an open relationship (which I'm generally not comfortable with to begin with), chances are I wouldn't use the term 'girlfriend'.

I also agree with Core-Ray on her definition of the word.

And every time I scratch my nails down someone else's back, I hope you feel it.
