Time passed since Ryugi had left Blackthorn City on the back of Eclipse. It had been a long time since Ryugi had been to Mount Silver. He'd often done speed runs back and forth on Eclipse or Kajiru to pump up their wing strength and muscle power. He loved flying in the clouds with the wind whipping through his air. And he knew that Eclipse loved it too. It wasn't often that the Charizard just got to spread his wings and enjoy his gift of flight. So it was a great occasion for him as well.
But as Mount Silver loomed in the distance, its snow covered peaks being blown by clouds, and idea popped into Ryugi's head. he grinned and leaned down to Eclipse, speaking directly into the dragon's ear.
You know, its been a while since you've shown me what you can do as far as flight speed. I wonder if you've gotten slower since we stopped doing runs.
The Charizard grunted and shook slightly, Ryugi gripping him more tightly and chuckling.
Now now, I'm only kidding. Or am I? Let's see what you can do Eclipse! Full speed towards Mount Silver!! Let's go!!
With a powerful roar and a thunderous flap of his wings, the charizard shot forward, pounding away at the air as his body picked up speed, the view around Ryugi tunneling as it picked up, scenery whizzing past him. It was exhilarating. Ryugi grinned and ducked down low to Eclipse to minimize his air resistance and shouted out over the sound of the whipping wind.
Alright, I know you can do better than that! Go for a dive to pick up speed and don't worry about me, I can hold on no matter how fast you go! Give it everything you've got!!
With a jarring climb, Eclipse shot into the air, spinning around into a flip before diving and folding in his wings to speed towards the ground. Ryugi felt his heart in his throat, but he loved it, his adrenaline raced, his senses were moving a mile a minute, and every fiber of his being tingled with the rush of high-speed flight.
Moments before Eclipse would have slammed into the tops of the trees surrounding Mount Silver, he leveled out, snapping open his wings, and sped over the treetops at well over two-hundred miles per hour. Trees shot under the duo as Eclipse flapped his wings harder and faster, doing his very best to maintain his current rate of speed.
Good work Eclipse, you're as fast as ever, now, agility training!! Drop down to that river and stay no more than five feet above the top of the water! Let's see you move it!
With another roar of affirmation, Eclipse barrel rolled to the side, Ryugi clinging to him tightly with a grin and whoop. The flame pokemon ducked down to the river flowing away from Mount Silver and out to the sea near the Indigo Plateau, and proceeded to drop to just five feet above the surface. Below, Ryugi watched as the Magikarp and Tentacool shot away from the surface as the massive black shape of the Charizard flew over their domain. He took a moment to look behind them as they continued and spied a large plume of water being shot into the air from the downdraft around Eclipse's mighty wings.
He shot his head around just as they came to a mighty bend in the river, and Eclipse turned to the side, fanning his wings to catch his weight, before powering forward with a mighty wing beat, sending both he and Ryugi rocketing into the turn. Then, just as quickly, Eclipse turned back to the left, slowing again, before thundering forward with all his strength. As they accelerated out of the turn, a set of trees lay in their path, standing tall and pristine in the morning sun.
Through them!!
Eclipse lowered his head and folded his wings after a brief climb, barrel rolling as he sped through the smallest gap between the tallest trees, Ryugi holding on with another whooping cry. Eclipse finished his roll and snapped his wings open, gliding at top speed down the river.
Alright Eclipse, that was really something. But now I think it's time to look for a landing spot. Give me a climb and we can start looking for a decent place to settle down.
Eclipse climbed up again, loosing some of his speed before simply cruising along at a more comfortable pace now. After a few moments, Ryugi spotted a clearing near the base of the mountain where a few buildings appeared to be set up. He ordered Eclipse to land over there, and continue his journey for Rayquaza.

Ryugi walked for quite some time until he came to the gathering of buildings he saw from the air. It was a quiet little community of sorts nestled at the base of Mount Silver. It didn't seem to be located on any map, which was odd, but either way, there was no telling his eyes it didn't exist.
He neared the place and took a breather against a nearby tree when an elderly gentlemen neared him.
Nyeh... Hey there sonny! Don't get many outsiders around here. You look a bit tired. How's about you follow me into the village and I get you a tall glass of lemonade?
Ryugi perked up. Something about old people and their way of always offering to help was always so inviting. It reminded him of that old man that supposedly helped kids learn to catch pokemon in Kanto.
Lemonade you say? That sounds great. Thank you.
Ryugi pushed himself off the tree and followed the man into the village.

As the old man lead Ryugi through the village, he looked around at the scenery. The place looked old, very traditional. Small houses made of lighter materials were clustered around a well in the middle of the center of the village, and on the outskirts there were farming areas with a few Miltank wandering around. But nonetheless, Ryugi spied a few generators sitting around, rattling away, and some laughing of kids as they listened to Professor Oak's radio show. It seems they weren't completely living in the past after all.
Lena! Leeena! Pour a few nice glasses of lemonade! We've got company!
The older man called as he neared one of the houses, and a woman who looked to be in her late twenties with dark green locks of hair walked out.
Oh my, company indeed. Welcome to our little home. It isn't much, but we do have lemonade!
The woman smiled and brought out a pitcher and a few glasses, and sat them down on a table outside of the house. Ryugi took one as she filled it and took a sip. It was ice cold, and wasn't overly sour or sweet. These people sure knew how to make lemonade.
Thank you, Miss. And you too, Sir. Your hospitality is much apprieciated.
Oh, it's nothing. I'm Laura, and like Grandpa said, you're company. And we rarely get visitors to our little neck of the woods. Its nice to see a new face every now and then.
It's a pleasure to meet you.
The old man took a sip of his drink and sighed contentedly.
Very true, so, tell us Sonny, what brings you to our little village, eh?
Ryugi sat and talked for a while, detailing his dream, and his decision to go to Mount Silver in the interest of finding Rayquaza. He hoped he didn't sound too crazy, but the man and woman simply nodded and listened like it was any other story.
Oh my, so you're the Blackthorn City Gym Leader? That's quite something.
Yes indeed. And that dream of yours sounds mighty interesting as well. You see, here in this town, we believe that Rayquaza is the master of the air and sky. It brings sunlight and good weather to our crops, and makes the winters mild so that we may have a good harvest. In fact, we have a shrine high up near the summit of Mount Silver to honor its great power. It is said that the holder of the dragon's orb has a strong and noble heart, and if you ask me, it sounds like that dream of yours is trying to tell you that, and that perhaps Rayquaza is looking for someone like you.
Ryugi nodded as he listened. It seems he'd picked a good spot to land.
I see... Well, it sounds like I should head up the mountain to see the shrine for myself. I may be able to find the next step of my journey there.
That sounds like a good idea as any. But if you're heading up the mountain, be sure to pack for cool weather, oh! And something else too!
Laura hurried off into the house for a moment before she returned with a small bundle of rice cakes.
Here. These will give you something tasty to eat while on your travels.
Ryugi took the bundle and put it in his bag.
Thank you for your hospitality, and for the cakes. I'm sure they'll be wonderful. Well, I suppose I best be going. I don't want to get stuck halfway up the mountain with no light left.
Good luck there Sonny.
Have a safe trip!
Ryugi smiled and waved as he left the village, and began his trek up the side of Mount Silver.

A couple hours had gone by, and Ryugi was sitting on a rock on the side of a mountain path. He was munching on a few rice cakes that Laura had given him at the village. They were delicious. She was cute AND could cook. That was indeed a bonus. As he nom nommed, he thought about his dream.
I wonder what it all means. I wonder if the disturbances in Hoenn have anything to do with why I've been singled out.
He finished off the cake as he stood up, brushed himself off, straightened his shirt, and continued up the mountain. It then occurred to him that he hadn't thought to use Eclipse to fly up to the top of the mountain. However, he determined that some journeys were better left to be taken on foot, and continued his hike.
************************************************************
Finally, after several more hours, Ryugi climbed to the top of the mountain, reaching the summit. As soon as he reached the top, he began looking for the shrine that the old man and Laura had spoken of. It had to be there somewhere.

. . .The shrine Ryugi sought wouldn't be hard to find, if only because of the Pokemon's cry that came as he reached the summit originated from slightly on top of the shrine. "Pika?" The shrine was seemingly already being tended to by someone dressed in a Indigo Plateau trainer jacket and a matching hat (both of which were some years old), a Pikachu clinging to the teen's shoulder. The bright-cheeked mouse Pokemon waved at Ryugi, while the trainer stayed facing the shrine, out of eye-contact of Kazamaru. The Poke Balls on his belt marked him as a trainer, for those not familiar with the Indigo Plateau brand of clothing produced by the Pokemon League, and for someone like Ryugi, it was perfectly obvious who he was. And why he hadn't looked around.

Ryugi stopped in his tracks. Could it be? Was that...him? There was only one guy that dressed like that as far as Ryugi knew, especially who was rumored to wander around Mount Silver. Ryugi waved back to the Pikachu and his hand went to his belt for an instant before he smiled and spoke. Well then... It seems I'm not alone up here on this mountain. I'm Ryugi Kazamaru, the Blackthorn City Gym Leader, and I'm on a quest to get to that shrine there.
Its no mystery to who you are. As a Gym Leader, I too look for ways to test my strength. So, how about it? Let's have a one on one match. One of yours versus one of mine. Otherwise, I'd be vastly outnumbered.
So, what do you say, Pokemon Trainer Red? Ryugi gripped a pokeball on his waist, his eyes serious. He knew it wouldn't be an easy fight no matter who he chose, and that being the case, he'd be going with his strongest...

. . .Ryugi would be able to see Red's lips quirk for a moment before he turned around to face the Gym Leader, his face expressionless as always. He inclined his head, accepting Ryugi's challenge, and stepped away from the shrine, taking his usual spot at the very spot of the summit, opposite Ryugi. ". . ." Pikachu, by now practically an extension of his trainer, dismounted Red's shoulder, landing on all fours with grace. His bright red cheeks sparked for a moment, Pikachu assuming an expression not dissimilar to his trainer, and Red simply tweaked his cap, waiting for Ryugi to make the first move.

Well, the rumors about him not saying much were true, that much was for certain. "The Silent Protagonist" some had called him, and Ryugi could see why. He smirked, matching Red's almost exactly and gripped the one ball on his belt in first position. He never started with him because he'd always save the best for last, except for certain circumstances. And this was one of them. Alright then. In that case, let's get this started.
Reign over the blackened skies, Eclipse! Ryugi's strongest pokemon, Eclipse the black Charizard erupted from his pokeball, roaring a challenge that shook the ground with its ferocity. Ryugi knew that whatever Red chose it would likely be an uphill battle the entire way. So, it was time to see if all that speed and agility training would pay off...

. . .Red stood for a moment, one hand tapping his belt whilst the other stayed on his cap, seeming almost to hold it still despite the non-existent breeze. Finally, he made his move - he snatched the first Poke Ball on his belt, maximizing it in the same movement, and simply held it in his hand for a moment, before pressing the release button and letting it roll out of his hand. The blazing red energy erupted out of the Ball, releasing a Pokemon that seemed to hover above the ground ethereally - Lapras. The Ball returned to Red, snapping shut as he accepted it into his hand, making the simple movement seem almost like a magic trick - Pikachu, in the midst of all this, retreated to the sidelines, letting out a "Pika Pika!" in excitement. Lapras let out a yawn, eyes shutting momentarily, before snapping wide open to look at Eclipse with what could only be called a smile as sweet as honey. "Lapraaaa . . ." If Ryugi looked closely, on the Poke Ball Red was now minimizing was the Silph Co. logo, emblazoned on Ryugi's PokeGear and probably many of the things the man owned - though not his Poke Balls . . .

Ryugi grinned. Lapras was indeed water, but had a secondary type of ice, making Eclipse's flame attacks normally effective against it. Ryugi knew that if he was going to have any hope of winning this, he'd have to take to the air, and that's what he did.
Eclipse, get airborne and gather energy for Trump Card Number Two!
With a mighty roar, the Charizard complied with its trainer's orders and headed skyward with a pulse of its powerful wings, its body glowing as it gathered energy.

. . .Red nodded, having expected the move - after all, he owned a Charizard himself, and knew well enough the Flame Pokemon was nowhere near as effective grounded as in the air. He also knew well enough that Eclipse had just made himself an easier target. ". . ." Quite how Lapras knew what its trainer commanded it to do was up for anyone's guess (although the species was rumored to have some measure of telepathic ability), but nonetheless, he started to move, turning this way and that whilst it swayed its head to an invisible beat. Moments later, however, the Lapras stopped, and suddenly threw its head up. "Lapraa!" And suddenly, a Blizzard started. Eclipse, having taken to the air, would not have the modicum of protection the summit of Mt. Silver had offered him from the razor-sharp snow crystals and well below-zero temperatures that now buffeted him. He was literally open to the elements, and despite its Fire typing, Ice type moves were still effective against the black Charizard. Red could only just imagine what Eclipse was going through up in the air.

Ryugi chuckled. The kid knew his stuff. Blizzard would be normally effective against Eclipse. He knew that the Charizard could take a hit from a move of that power and keep on ticking with little issue. And take it he did, but he wasn't out yet. Eclipse! Solarbeam!! With a thunderous roar, Eclipse let loose the power of the attack towards Red's Lapras, diving as he did. Floating or not, Lapras was not made for speed, especially on land. And that Solarbeam would be terribly powerful coming from Eclipse's very high Special Attack abilities even if it wasn't a move he was strong with. As soon as the attack launched, the Charizard swooped down closer, using its speed to dive in right after the strike. Eclipse's body began to glow red, roiling heat energy dissipating the ice crystals that had battered him as he swooped in closer for his next attack. Eclipse, make it count and hit it while its recovering, OVERHEAT!!Just as Red's Lapras would be recovering from the stinging super-effective power of the Solarbeam, Eclipse's mouth would open, its tail-flame would erupt, and a massive gout of searing flames would blast away from it's mouth. This move, while only normally effective, WOULD get a powerful bonus from Eclipse's type, and be devastating to the already injured Lapras. Ryugi was using his speed to his advantage, and now that he had the water-type right where he wanted it, he wasn't going to let it get away. If he didn't act quickly, he knew he'd pay for it, and he was not going to let that happen...

. . .Ryugi had chosen a good combo - SolarBeam was quite effective against Lapras, due to the typing of the move, and Overheat to follow up was a quick, relatively easy move. No chance of it being stopped - but every chance of it being returned. Lapras stood the onslaught with immense strength, not letting so much as a cry be heard as he was hit with the attacks, and simply shook his head as if to clear it after Eclipse had swooped in for his attack. Red twitched, the right side of his body moving ever so slightly toward Lapras, a silent gesture of concern, and the Water/Ice type gave a sideways nod to indicate its readiness to battle. ". . ." By the time it turned around, the Lapras' eyes were pulsating with a deep indigo glow. Just as Eclipse would be finishing his swoop, about to pull out of the move, he would be hit with a tremendous amount of telekinetic energy, focusing on the neck and wing area of Eclipse's back. The move, which would have been enough to shatter a lesser Pokemon's back almost irreparably - for Red was wearing no kid gloves with Ryugi - would slam the Charizard face-first back into the summit, regardless of his strong its wings were. Psychic had unerring accuracy, so the speed Ryugi was using to his advantage would not allow him to dodge the attack. As Eclipse would slam into the summit, Red nodded, and Lapras gave a cry as it seemed to rock forward. A massive tumult of water, heading at a tremendous speed toward Eclipse, had been summoned by Lapras' Brine attack, an attack that had had its attack power doubled by Eclipse's powerful combo attack - an attack that would be just as effective on Eclipse as the SolarBeam had been to Lapras. There was literally no way for Eclipse to avoid the attack, given the speed of the water and the ferocity of the Psychic attack he had been hit with. Fair was fair, after all.

Eclipse! Watch out!The Psychic attack hit Eclipse perfectly. It was impossible to stop mental waves unless you were shifty or used your own mental waves as well. Eclipse did indeed slam into the ground, and hard. But Eclipse, if he could talk, would liken it to a very powerful Body Slam of sorts. Eclipse, I know you can do it, you have to get up and stop that attack!!Battered and bruised, Eclipse pulled itself to all fours, not quite the most graceful maneuver for the draconic pokemon, but effective nonetheless. Red was a smart strategist. There was no way Eclipse would be able to avoid the attack. But there was more than one way to take an attack. You could take it head on, or you could fight through it with everything you had. Eclipse was, and always had been a fighter, and he would show that here today. As Red would watch, the Charizard's red eyes burned with energy, its body glowed with energy, and once more it's tail flame burned bright (although slightly less so), but then, suddenly, it doubled in size, amking even larger than before as Eclipse's ability activated. In every Charizard's heart there burned a flame, a flame hotter than anything else, and when in dire need of extra power to see things through to the end, that power was awakened, just as it had for Eclipse now. That power, that flame, was Blaze. Just as Lapras' attack had doubled in power once it hit 50% damage, Eclipse's ability doubled the power of his single most powerful move, along with his type advantage. The water blast stood no chance as Eclipse let out a thunderous roar that shook the ground and rattled the skies and a massive blast of flames shot towards the oncoming tumult of water. As the two connected, steam billowed up, blocking them from view, until the steam ignited, blasting away in a massive explosion as the sheer heat of Eclipse's fire broke the steam into hydrogen and oxygen. But when the explosion fell back, Red and Lapras would be facing the remaining onslaught of fire from the massive blast heading right towards them with no way to dodge. Ryugi grinned. Sometimes when things look bleak, all one can do is fight forward with everything you've got, and hope for the best...
