I was thinking about Joseph, the one in Egypt with the coat of many colors. It's one of my favorite stories.

Yes he was. So Joseph is Jacob's eleventh son and is Rachel's oldest son. and Reuban was Jacob's oldest son. So why did the birthright go to Joseph after Reuban gave it up do to unrighteousness?

I'm pretty sure it's because Joseph was the only son who was righteous enough to receive the birthright.

Nope, it was because he was Rachel's firstborn. Since Leah's son Reuban gave up the birthright, it skipped over all of Leah's sons, and went to Rachel's sons.

I don't think it says it in the scriptures why, it just says that it went to Joseph, but it's old customs that gave the reason as to why it went to Joseph. I just learned about it, and I thought it was pretty interesting.
In what ways did Joseph show that he was obedient?

Well, he was respectful to his father and never gave in to temptation, and he had faith that the Lord would help him through his afflictions.

He was eventually able to get back his freedom and help his family, and he was an influential figure in the course of Hebrew history.
