"Ah, hello there! Care to tell me how in the hells you managed to slide your view into my pockets without me noticing? Then again, maybe that isn't so important as to ask why you are so curious about what I have in my pockets in the first place."

"My volu? Oh, you want to see my volu! All you had to do is ask. I'm very partial to showing off my little ones." She leans a bit closer to whisper, "Of course, don't tell Korria that I called her that. I still have need of my fingers in this life."

"Well, you heard their request, same as I did, guys. Everybody out, front and center!"

"Yeouch!" She waves a hand side to side as a rather irrated Korria flutters down to land by her son, Mahtan, with what you could swear to be a Volu-ish smirk on her face. "I keep forgetting how sensitive her ears are ..."

Firama (Elven for 'Dark Beauty')
As told by Eirnae:
My very first companion beyond that of Alimus, Firama shall always have a special place in my heart. We have been through a lot together, she and I, and that will never change. Firama has shown a great aptitude for gardening and the enjoyment of long walks in natural places, a true 'outdoor volu'. Yes, she gardens. She helps me while watering the rose garden, also scampering through the house and checking on the many plants indoors to be sure they have enough moisture and nutrients. For this purpose Calavel made her a tiny leather harness that she can slip in and out of easily, it housing the small vitamins she buries in the pots of my plants to keep them healthy as well as the packets of water that she refills every day for 'emergancy watering'. If a plant is in real trouble, while a rarity it does happen now and then, she dashes to my side and nips the hell out of my ankle to get my attention. I love her... really. Oh yes, did I mention that she loves to spend time with her lifemate, Kaelth, and her daughter, Soldeth? No? Well, she does.

Firama is not just another volu who happens to be a gardening fanatic, she is an intelligent friend who listens very well and follows directions to a tea if spoken to politely. She understands Elven as well as Common, a trait I am sure is a result of me using both languages often. She is a wonderful mother from what I can see, though Soldeth is not interested in learning how to garden despite how many times Firama seems to try and catch her interest.

Her and Korria have gotten into some spats, granted, but I always break them up before the fur flies.

She is mighty proud of the wings that I had made for her. They magically float just above her back, and she can control them as if she were born with them. She's also rather fond of the pearl necklace I gave her, as well.

Kaelth
As told by Eirnae:
He has a deep love of literature, an amazing feat for a volu in my way of thinking. Ever since I adopted him from his past owner, BlackScorpion, Kaelth has amazed me with his patience and sense of calm. Even Soldeth, who tends to be very hyper, stops and listens to me read when he is around.

I already mentioned how just his presence seems to calm the rest of my volu, but that is not the full extent of his abilities. I swear that Kaelth knows how to read both Common and Elven, or at least is a very convincing con artist. What really sold me on this is how Firama was cuddled up next to him one day looking up at me as I read to them both, then she glanced down at the page I was reciting off of when Kaelth nudged her gently. She started to move her head side to side as he did, him squeaking instructively. Call me crazy, but I think he was trying to teach her how to read. I catch him doing the same with Soldeth, when he can get her to stay in one spot long enough.

Kaelth impresses me as being a pacifist at heart, but you never know. Thus far he has had no opportunity, nor made one, to attack any living being.

He's recently shown signs of becoming near sighted, so I saw to getting him a volu sized pair of reading glasses. Don't laugh, because they do the trick. When he doesn't need to use them, he tucks them back to rest in front of his ears, like some Gaians do with their sunglasses.

User Image

Soldeth (Elven for 'Memory Eternal')
As told by Eirnae:
Hyperactive does not quite cover this little girl's energy levels, but it is close. As long as she's amongst familiar company she is a constantly moving ball of fur, barely visible as she tackles and wrestles with anything that dares to move in her presence. Of course once someone she doesn't know enters the picture she clams up and hides behind the nearest comforting body, often my own or one of her parents. Amazing that a volu that loves to play as much as her is so painfully shy around strangers. Anyway, once she makes friends with the new face she goes back to being extremely active. A sure sign that you have won her confidence is if she pounces on you or a part of you, possibly adding a light n** for good measure.

A darn good pouncer, even against my feline companions she is top notch. I'll never forget the look on Alimus's face when she leapt onto his muzzle and scampered up over his back. I do believe he was cross-eyed for a moment or two. Heh heh.. How Soldeth keeps up the pace that she does I'll never know, but she does eat and drink a lot to supply herself with the proper energy.

Like her mother, Soldeth does not get along well with Korria at all. Thus far I have broken up all of the possible fights, but one day I may not get there in time.

User Image

Ssinss (Drow for 'Allure')
As told by Eirnae:
Vanity, thy name is Ssinss. This volu is a beauty, and does she ever know it! If there is a reflective surface near her, I swear that she can't resist checking herself out in it before moving on. She isn't a bad sort, however much she views herself as being 'prettier than thou'. She's often the first volu on the scene if there is ever a tiff between Firama/Soldeth and Korria, aka 'The Girls'. She's interested in keeping the peace, and has thrown herself between them to do just that often enough to be a reliable deterrant. It's not till everyone has gone their separate ways does she run off to groom herself back into her full, unrumpled glory.

She spends most of her time grooming her tail and watching over my other volu for signs of trouble, though she will politely chatter with them if approached. Me getting her the tiny tiara that she always wears these days simply made sense, what with how she holds court during social functions.

User Image

Chath'lauske (Drow for 'Fire Hair')
As told by Eirnae:
This little one was not named for his fur color alone. Oh no, for you see, he's our resident volu pyro. I've lost track of how many times he's singed a paw or his tail when scooting up to get a closer look at the flames in our fireplace. No matter how many times I altered the guard fence, he found a way past it. Lately he's gotten better about not getting too close, contenting himself with sitting on the small flame-resistant cushion that I made for him and watching the sparks dance from the relatively safe vantage point of the marble side table that's next to the fireplace.

He's pretty much a loner, though for some reason he and Ssinss seem to get along fairly well. She even goes to visit with him from time to time, often just sitting next to him on his cushion and joining him in watching the fire.

User Image

Korria (Elven for 'Black Huntress')
As told by Eirnae:
Korria earned her way out of her cage long ago, and her days of agression seem to be over for the most part. She tends to keep to herself when not with me, her lifemate, Remus, or her son, Mahtan, avoiding Firama and Soldeth whenever possible. I'm not sure why these three female volu don't get along or what started it, but at least Korria doesn't go looking for trouble and vice versa. What does Korria like to do to pass the time? She works on the burrow she started with Remus in the rose garden, now encouraging her son to aid her in that task. She also prowls about the woodlands near the manor for small game to take down and bring home to us, even divulging in sharing bits of the meat with Firama and Soldeth when the mood strikes her. She seems happiest when with Remus or Mahtan or both, and is currently trying to teach them how to hunt as she does. Remus is showing promise in that area, but Mahtan is a lost cause. That dear boy only likes fruits and flower nectar, the very smell of meat makes him turn his head in disgust.

Korria was trained by the dark pixies to be an efficent killer, and in a way she still is. She keeps up her art of stalking prey and giving it a quick, painless death by hunting in the woods near our home. I have followed her many times just to view her techique, and I could not have taught her better myself. Of course her nature had me concerned that she would not be a nurturing mother, but I should have known better. She treasures Mahtan, I can see it in the way she nuzzles and fusses over him. I feel close to her for that, for we are both hunters with young, and we both love our babies more than our own lives.

She is skilled in remaining still in a patch of darkness, preferring high branches so she can look down at the forest floor with keen yellow eyes. Once she spots a viable target she swoops down and aims to land atop them, crushing their spine as her fanged teeth dart for the throat to bite down hard as all four paws stink their claws into the sides of her prey. Depending on what it is, though she often chooses mice over other options, she'll then take to the air carrying her prize.

Butterfly Volu

User Image

Mahtan (Elven for 'Mage Spinner')
As told by Eirnae:
If I wanted a volu that is near the complete opposite of Korria other than her apparent love for those that win her trust, I got one. Her own son, the very one that I adopted from BlackScorpion, is as gentle as a volu can get. He spends his time fluttering from flower to flower in Shina's garden, sniffing each one and occansionally taking a sip of nectar. He has no interest in hunting, as he is a vegetarian whose favorite foods are fruits, vegetables, and of course flower nectar. He does play with Soldeth from time to time, but he flies away and hides when she starts to get overally active. He seems to respect his mother, Korria, and father, Remus, but gets along best with his father, who understands the need for calm repose better than Korria.

None of my volu have mastered the art of admiring beauty quite like Mahtan. He loves all things he deems 'pretty', and will perch on a steady surface so he can gaze at a particular object or being for hours. Cyoro often borrows him and takes him to her place to see if he likes her latest work of art, as she trusts in Mahtan's 'sense of artistic perfection'.

A recent change is his interest in one of Krista's volu, a fae volu by the name of Windstar. Krista is a good friend of mine, and a housemate besides. Mahtan seems to be taking advantage of Windstar's proximity to visit her as often as he can, as I've lost track of how many times I've seen the two of them chasing one another in the rose garden or snuggling on Mahtan's favorite rock by the koi pond. It's quite cute, really, to see these two volu court one another. I wonder if they will form a lasting relationship such as the one Mahtan's parents have kept?

Mahtan meets Windstar (2/25/06)
Mahtan: Mahtan wriggles his nose as well, but its more to smell this new volu than anything else. "Chirr?"

Windstar: Looks at the butterfly volu, sniffing at him then flutters her wings just a little. "Chirr?"

Korria chitters from Eirnae's shoulder instructively as her son's tail fluffs up around him like a scarf on a windy day. Eirnae scoops up Korria and then winks. "Methinks we'll leave these two alone. C'mon, Firama, Soldeth, and Kaelth. Yee... Stop that, Korria. You have to let them grow up sometime..."

Mahtan: Swivels his ears, listening to Windstar veeery closely, trying not to be nervous. This female... Yes, she's definately a female, is beautiful in both appearance and smell. "Chirr..."

Windstar: Walking over to him, she walks around him, looking over his wings still chirring as her tail moved behind her curiously.

Mahtan: Aware that he's on display, Mahtan tries not to become self-concious, instead he sniffs at what fur she allows near his nose, antennae and wings twitching.

Windstar: Moving to sit back in front of him, her ears move alittle as her tail brushes against him. Wrinkling her nose up she falls back to all four almost like a cat stalking its prey ready to pounce.

Mahtan: Wu oh... Was this a GOOD thing? His wings unfurl to either side of him and stay there, as if ready to start flapping at a moment's notice for a quick get away. His tail is flung to the side, floofing out behind him to add to his size even as it's moved out of his way. He squeaks inquisitively, pawing at the ground as his hind leg muscles bunch up in readiness for a flying leap.

Windstar: Chirrping, she dances in place from side to side. Her tail swishing behind her in a happy matter as she looks at him. Leaping forward she tries to see if she could pin him.

Mahtan: Instincts clash in a once very serene mind as Mahtan tries to decide what to do. The habit of taking off when Soldeth does this very thing sets his muscles to 'fllight mode', while long dormant volu tendencies poke at him to dart to the side and then try to pounce on her in turn. Since both are grid-locked, Windstar meets her goal of pinning him before he even realizes it happened.

Windstar: Chirring, she licks at his nose happy she was able pinned him. Leaping off of him she sit there brushing at her tail with her front paw every once in awhile looking over at him.

Mahtan: He blinks in surprise at both being pinned and his nose being licked. When she scrambles off of him, he scurries after her and settles a couple of inches away. He watches her play with her tail for a bit before chirriping and attempting to do the same with one of his paws, using his nails to comb her tail's fur like he often does for his own.

Windstar: Chirping, she looks at him before moving her tail so it was closer to him. She watch him her wings moving every once in awhile. Her ears twitch alittle as she moved closing the gap between them.

Mahtan: Notices her getting closer, and chirrs his approval, both front paws now stroking at her tail and getting out small knots. Should he encounter a larger one, he bends down and clamps his mouth on the hair just above it so he can work it out without hurting her.

Windstar: Chirring, she moves her tail just alittle before pulling it away just as she leans in to lick his nose. It was her way of saying thank you.

Mahtan: Gets licked on the nose once more, and feels as if his whole body is a bit warmer, especially at his cheeks. He wriggles his nose once her tongue has done its 'damage', and then experimentally tries licking hers.

Windstar: Wrinkling her own nose she chirps slightly out of surprise before going shy as she hides her face in her tail. Peeking through her fur she chirps at him feeling bashful as her cheeks begin to warm up.

Tadre (Elven for 'Charming Fox')
As told by Eirnae:
This mischevious treasure hasn't been with us for long, but already she's winning over members of the family. Of all the volu that I call my own, she's the one who loves to cuddle the most. Yes, I can safely say that is one of her more defining traits. If there is an available lap, she becomes a flash of orangish brown to try and get to it before one our household's other companions do. She seems to crave attention, and isn't above performing tricks to get it. When I say tricks, I don't mean the type you teach to your average housepet, though I suppose I could very well try and see if she'll 'sit' and 'roll over' for a treat. No, I'm referring to the sneaky 'I'm going to find a way to trip you so I can nuzzle up to your face all the faster' kind of tricks. Her favorite tactic is to hide in one of our many potted plants, and wait for someone to wander by. She then leaps from the foilage like a bat out of hell, and plants herself in front of her target. If they don't stumble due to her dexterious theatrics, usually they do to try and avoid flattening her under their feet. It's quite comical to see her perched on the chest of her latest 'victim', chirring happily as whomever she's claimed pets her. She's tried this trick on me, and as you can well imagine, it has yet to work. She hasn't given up though, a trait I admire in her, and keeps trying new variations to see if she can catch me unaware. For her trouble I usually just pluck her up as I walk around her little show, and deposit her on my shoulder for a bit of attention. After all, the dear girl is trying, and I have to thank her for helping keep my family on their toes somehow.

Tadre recently became friends with a fae volu by the name of Taitah, who is one of Melomar's volu clan. Never before had I witnessed Tadre being motherly towards another volu till I saw her with Taitah. I do hope the dear girl doesn't mind Tadre's fussing.

Garael (Elven for 'Owl Knight')
As told by Eirnae:
If you've never had the treat of witnessing a pint sized furball with a tail longer than the span of his body trying to fit the smallest metal helmet you've ever seen onto his head, then you should really come over and visit us some time. I didn't know what to name Garael for quite a while. I was afraid he would get far too used to being called over by the classic, "Hey you!" or "Yeah, you with the stripes!". Once Kaelth got his paws on him, however, finding the right name was almost instantly solved when I happened across the scene I described earlier. Just add a very annoyed owl into the mix. Yeah, I know, it sounds ridiculous, but let me explain. Kaelth, my Firama's lifemate, is a very bookish volu, and showed me the very book that he had shared with Garael that day after I had my belly laugh at the sight of my long-tailed volu trying to stay astride a wildly flapping owl's back. Kaelth had found one of my older volumes, and had gone over a tale about knights with their noble steeds and lofty ideals. Garael must have gotten inspired, and went off adventuring in the forest to seek a 'steed' of his own, borrowing one of my metal thimbles for a helmet, which he tied on with thread. Luckily, the owl left in a huff after a bit of calming down, and Garael seemed to give up on the whole taming an owl idea. For a while. Nowadays, I'm just glad that Garael holds himself responsible for the owl that he hustled out of a nest all those months ago. Would you believe he's even taught himself how to joust while riding it? Makes me wonder who in the world he expects to compete against when he's the only 'owl knight' that I know of. Coincidentally, he now has a full set of armor, a sword, several wooden lances, and his owl has a cute leather riding harness. I could lament Calavel's construction of these items, but they make him so happy that I've decided to let him do as he wishes... as long as he doesn't skewer someone.

Vonihel (Elven for 'Frozen Tears')
As told by Eirnae:
Despite what his name may imply, Vonihel is not the overly sad sort. He simply came into our lives during a turbulent time, one which I cannot help but remember whenever I see him. I am glad for the reminder, as it is more one of how there are indeed kind forces in this world rather than one of distress. I won't bore you with all of the details. Let's just say that one of my nieces came to great harm while on the land that I share with my fiance', our dear friend Krista, and our gathered families. The situation was already being handled, and I was left feeling rather useless. After comforting those who would accept it, I wandered out into the gardens to have a good cry to let out my frustrations. I usually hate to be disturbed during such moments, and so I was left alone. Right up till the moment Vonihel skittered out of the bushes and pressed his side up against my leg, chirring softly with what I took to be concern. I looked down, prepared to shoo away whatever was cuddling up to me, and met Vonihel's firey eyes, which always seem larger than they truly are because of how they stand out from his 'light as a cloudy summer day' fur. Right then, I suddenly found myself needing something soft and warm to snuggle, and this volu fit the bill nicely. He was shortly in my lap, nuzzling my cheek as I released what remained of my tears.

Vonihel has remained as caring as the day I first met him. He has made it his business to be there for those he has adopted, such as Lenore, Shina, and myself, when we are feeling down. He is a comforter, through and through. He is slowly getting to know the rest of my volu, but I have yet to see signs of him befriending one of them. He is often too busy watching over one of the two legged members of our families to worry over gaining friends of his own species.

Holiday Volu

User Image

Caitlin (Gaelic for 'Pure') - Valentine's Day, '06
As told by Eirnae:
Yes, I named Caitlin based on a bit of reading I did of Gaian cultures. I find the Gaelic dialect to have a certain simple delight in its pronounciations, and so I decided to try out naming one of my volu one of my favorites of the selection of Gaelic names I have uncovered. I believe Caitlin's name suits her well, with her being so purely devoted to her quest for beauty in both the natural world and in others.

I find it very ironic that our Caitlin was born on Valentine's Day, the holiday that Gaians trade chocolates and flowers while making overtures of love. Ever since she grew out of her baby fluff, she's been on the prowl for a mate. She's very focused on perfecting her flirtations, to the point of me often finding her flouncing in front of a mirror, likely using her reflection for practice. She chats with all of my volu on a regular basis, though I'm tempted to believe that she's asking their opinions regarding various flirting techniques than making small talk. Then again, since Caitlin has joined our family, I've noticed that all of my volu have gained a new sheen and softness to their fur. I presume this is Caitlin's doing, as I caught her busily combing Firama's tail fluff with bits of leaves stuck between the toes of her front paws. Whatever it is she's doing for them, it's certainly working.

When she's not training to snare a mate, or grooming, Caitlin often joins Firama in patrolling the manor to check on our potted plants. She also has a deep love of roses, and seems to enjoy perching on Shina's shoulder while my fa'e daughter tends to that section of the garden. With Caitlin and Firama about the manor, I can't see how any of our plants will ever be in peril during their lifetimes.

Mirshann (Drow for 'Angel')
As told by Eirnae:
The smallest of my volu brood, and one that came as a definate surprise. How many people can say that an itty bitty fluffball simply poked its head up from inside their pocket one snowy day, and then chirped inquiringly at the sight of said snow? I have half a mind to say that Mirshann was born inside my pocket that day, she knows so little of the world. She's curious about everything, which gets her into some very dangerous situations. She's gotten lost inside boots, behind couches, and under flower pots more times than I can count.

From what I've seen, she has a special place in her heart for two things. One is anything to do with snow, and the other is my friend Draconayzia's volette, Rufus. If I even mention his name, she's immediately alert and starts looking around for him. Seeing her pout when he doesn't show up afterwards is one of the cutest things on this plane, with the indignant twitch to her tail and how she widens her eyes to stare up at me accusingly. I try not to tease her by saying his name when he isn't available, despite how tempting it is just to witness her antics.
