I've heard various people mention that setting up wards is a good way to protect oneself and others from negative energies/dark spirits/etc. My question is:
How do I set up a ward? Are there different types and ways of setting them up? What are some basic/easy ways to set up a ward?

Personally, I believe all reported spiritual attacks are the result of underdeveloped psychology; however, there is one exercise I especially liked, though I'm not sure if it would qualify as a ward.

0. As a prelude to the exercise, one is to meditate and search within for a creature that makes them feel especially safe, be it a dragon, minotaur, tiger, etc. Also, this creature should be one that the practitioner can identify with or relate to.

1. The core exercise is to visualize the area you wish to protect, and visualize this safety creature, or guardian if you prefer, prowling the area and getting familiar with it. Make sure your guardian appears bright, detailed, and vivid within your mind. Visualize especially the rooms you spend a lot of time in, like your bedroom. Also, concentrate a lot around staircases or doors, because as a good friend once told me, "our doorways are their doorways."
2. When, upon imagining your house (I assume), the image of your guardian insists itself upon your mind's eye, you are finished. Depending on your path, you may want to say thank you, you may want to burn incense as an offering, or you may want to assert your dominance over this force of yours. Whatever you choose to do, even should it be nothing, be sure it is comfortable and natural to you; it helps if this deal sealer feels sacred and personal.

3. When you feel threatened at any given time, conjure the image of your guardian again with great detail. When a time comes when your guardian does not appear to you in your protected space, reimpose the image upon the area.

----

It may not be a ward specifically, as I mentioned, but it sure is fun ^_^

Hmm, kind of like Harry's Patronus? biggrin

Dragon's, Wolves, and Fairies like the kind in my sig are the creatures that I like/relate to. I will have to think about this and see where I belong haha. Thanks!

I have heard of protecting oneself from psychic vampires by envisioning a circle of light around yourself, light that is made up of your energy, and acts to block from a psychic attack. That would probably work kind of like a ward, too, wouldn't it?

Out of all the wards I can think of the ones I'm most fond of are physical wards.

If you are unfamiliar with this type of ward I would not be surprised. The only places Iv seen that have information on such things before I knew where Ravens Nest esc stores.
And very obscure occult forums. Bear in mind this was a few years ago as well.
Back when I was into heavy amounts of practice with the arts, even slight amounts of studying. I kept with me three of these wards. It would be more accurate to call these amulets instead so as to give anyone reading this a better grasp.

This form would be given form by the wearer, and I advise against someone other then the wearer making the amulet. Which is hard in its self since you must at least know some form of Jewelry making knowledge. I kept a necklace and two rings. On the rings I kept two different symbols. Each entombed with a word of power. Much like the envisioning system listed above. This method makes it so concentration is not wasted on holding yourself to defense. For me the two words where (Hold) and (Father)
For the necklace however I used a symbol of faith, which being who I am was a very closely held object. But with all things there is a cost. To make the rings I smelted a spoon I used as a baby, a tooth from my dog elmo who had been deceased since may that year.
And (I kid you not) Quote Part of thine self unQuote. Lucky for me my mother still had two of my baby teeth.
The same for the necklace was I smelted my first class ring and an earring from my best friend, plus a sealed dime my grandfather gave me. The flesh for that one was very difficult to acquire, so excuse me if I don't list that.

But there is a word of warning here. There is an almost living energy the items will posses. So with all living things they do not last for ever. Which was a harsh lesson to learn for me as I could feel increasingly uneasy as I used them over the years. So for safety reason I have them sealed away with the other more stranger things in my collection.

(also I forgot to note that it does not matter the language used to inscribe the images or words into the items as it is a basis set by the wearer.)
This case in point is possible with so called made up words or languages as Iv run into some. But I would not overindulge this privilege.

So if I made a pendant out of clay with the rune for protection inscribed on it, worn as a necklace, that would be considered a physical ward? I had a metal one that I loved, but turns out I am allergic to the metal, so I gave it to my sister. I have no idea where I got it from, I just had it one day and then wore it all the time, always feeling more secure with it. Now I don't wear anything, but I have made the clay pendant and plan on putting it on a necklace as soon as I can find some hemp string.
