Hello Everyone, This week's weekly creature is the basilisk. Basilisk are gigantic snake like mythical creatures. They preferably like to live in dark places. They have a look that can turn anyone or anything that gazes directly at to stone. A famous Basilisk is one found in "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets." Your job for this week's contest is to come up with any facts, videos, pictures, or anything else dealing with basilisks. Again the winner will recieve a prize! Thanks and have fun, kagome_roker

The Basilsk is also a type of ordinary lizard from austrailia... the one that runs on water. But yes, the gigantic snake is real. Basilisks are born only when a frog sits on and incubates a chicken egg.

I learned when I was young that Basilisks look like this:
I'd never ever heard of the "giant snake" basilisk until Harry Potter came out. O_o

The Basilisk is thought to be the King of the Serpents and has been said to be able to cause death with simply a glance. The appearance of the Basilisk is highly disputed, however, because no one who has seen the Basilisk ever lives to tell about it. The basilisk has been said to look like the horned adder or hooded cobra from India -- a snake with a golden crown. In the Middle Ages, however, it had become a snake with the head of a c**k, and sometimes with the head of a human. The only way to kill a basilisk is by holding a mirror in front of its eyes, while avoiding to look directly at it. The moment the creature sees its own reflection, it will die of fright.

Keep up the good work everyone. Oh and I am intializing a new rule. A contestant in these contests can only win twice. I want to make this fair for all the other contestants and give them a shot at winning also. Please if you feel this unfair to you or anyone else let me know.
Thanks, kagome_roker

It is said that a Basilisk only comes into existance when a c**k's egg is hatched under a serpent or toad in a dunghill. The word Basilisk derives from the Greek word "Basiliskos" which means "little king." It is also said that a way to kill a Basilisk is if a human saw the creature before it saw them. Another more well known way is to show the creature it's reflection. Not only is the Basilisk's gaze deadly, but it's breath is fatal to any human, beast or plant life unfortunate enough to absorb it. The Basilisk is said to have relations to the ancient Greek beings the Gorgon Sisters (the most famous being Medusa) and that is where it gets it's fatal gaze. The Basilisk has appeared in movies(including Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets), books and video games (the most famous games being the Final Fantasy line). There is also the Common Basilisk, which is a lizard that is native to Central and South America. It can escape it's predators by running at incredible speeds across bodies of water, giving it the illusion of "walking on water."
