We all know that the martial arts ... as with everything in life ... involves a sort of mental aspect ... so how do you maintain your mental health ... solo ... or within a group ... anything will work ...

Mental focus is endemic to all of the internal martial arts. Each form and motion that you perform involves deep mental focus, almost meditative in nature. I don't think I have yet encountered a martial art where there isn't some form of meditation, even when it seems otherwise. A friend of mine who trains at the local MMA school says that there are times during his training when he enters a "zone" such as it were, where the outside world tends to fade away and it's just him and the object of his training. To a more traditional martial artist like myself, this sounds very similar to the state attained during qigong and other sorts of meditation. Imagine my shock to find that even in a "modern" martial science like MMA, meditation is alive and well, albeit in a non-traditional fashion!

The mental aspect of aspect of MMA ... for me anyway ... is to find that breaking point ... that point where you just want to give up ... and push through throug it .. push through the pain ... get rid of that voice in your head to "give up" ...
I've always had this motto if you can call it that toward me competing in MMA ... "I'll stand with you ...but if you're beating me on the feet ... I'll take it to the ground ... if your beating me on the ground ... well then I'm gonna make it a war ... and I'm gonna make you work for this win ..."
In my four decsion losses ... my opponents told me afterward that I was the hardest fight they have ever fought ... or they thought I won ...
And there have been cases where I was losing a fight ... and then everything seems to fade around me ... it is just me and my opponent ... everything slows down to a crawl ... everything becomes ultrafocused ... and then the flurry of action ... an opening .. and I take it ... the next thing I remember is my hand getting raised ... it is a crazy experience ...

I know this might sound stereotypical of boxing ... but you know how in like in Rocky IV ... how Rocky's trainer kept saying "no pain, no pain" ... well that's kinda the thing in boxing ... especially in training ... your trainer says this word that is relevant to your training ... then you respond ... then for some reason you get some energy back ...

in the art of iron body training, mental strength is 90% of the training, i work iron shirt so that if i get hit it won't hurt at all, i used to go to parties and have people smash bottles break 2x4's and sometimes their own hands on my stomach. acheiving this state of relaxed thought where you can concentrate and focus chi into certain parts of your body, was my way for 4 years, now i only use it to aid me in times of need, now my martial arts style is ninjitsu, unfortuanately since im in camp i can't train my weapons and a good portion of my hand to hand so now instead of being fractions of a milimeter off, im centimeters off

Being Native American ... we have our own spiritual beliefs ... which help with mental health ... we pray to the spirits for protection and strength ... and though it may sound primitive ... but it helps ...

Mental is a huge part of it ... there was a time where a team mate of mine had to cut a lot of weight (20 lbs to be exact) in less that a day ... (I advise anyone else not to do this, it is very dangerous) ... basically me and two others were with him in the sauna ... he had his plastics on and was riding a bike ... after the first hour he broke ... you could see it in his eyes ... his body did not want to do more ... but he pushed (with our encouragement of course) ... he refused to stop ... probably one of the toughest guys I've meet in the mental aspect of things ...

I know that some reassuring words from friends and training partners can calm some nerves ...

Another thing ... a week before the fight ... I visit a medicine man (who also happens to be my grandfather) ... and well I talk to him ... and he gives me words of wisdom ... very prophetic stuff ...
