Meaning
: "Cold", though he was named for the sound (since "rin" is the Japanese sound effect for a bell)

Gender : Male

Loyalty Info

Alliance
: Noble
He has a lust to 'know' the outside world, and while he bears absolutely no ill will towards Legionaires, he thinks it's a bit silly and that the only reason they are so opposed to change is because of the famous quote 'we fear that which we do not understand'.

Path : Living Conduit Priest

Weapon : Spinnerets.
Rings on his fingers that seem to have little diamond-shaped metal on them. These diamonds split in half when he 'projects' them. One half is anchored to the ring, the other half roams wherever Rin wills it to go. They are connected by a visible 'thread' of chi. He uses these Spinnerets in his day to day activities as well, but otherwise they simply look like rings to the general public. (he has four on each hand, totaling eight)

Weapon name(s) : The spinnerets don't have any names. But the dolls he occasionally controls do. These dolls are not used for fighting, as he usually uses them for transportation purposes.

Rin Saotome

Personality

__________Common Sense, Use it
Rin is very.......how shall we say? Blunt. If he thinks you're being stupid, he will let you know. He's a firm believer in common sense, and while he usually keeps his mouth shut and his hands busy when in a large group of people, he's the first one to jump up and say an idea is illogical and just plain idiotic. He can be a bit biting and sarcastic at times because of it, but at least you always know you're getting the truth with him.

He cannot STAND morons who leap first and beat the s**t outta everything, and then ask questions later. There should be a good balance between planning and action, because too much planning is just as asinine and superfluous as too much brute force. In short, as long as you have a smidgen of common sense to your name, and are willing to consider others opinions BEFORE jumping off onto an ill-informed tangent (he will tear people to shreds in calm debates/arguments, even when they're yelling, he'll keep a cool voice, keep sewing, and shine light on the fallacies in reasoning of their argument), you will do just fine in Rin's company.

__________I see London, I see Fraaa~ance ღ
But that's not all Rin would like to see. *wink wink nudge nudge cheesy grin*

Rin is a notorious lecher. While he's not particularly interested in anyone, he is ALWAYS happy to provide a stealthy grope to the backside of any good looking passerby, regardless of gender. Always ready with a flirtatious wink and grin on his face, he very much loves playing the part of the sexual beta male. Beta only because while he has the competence to be a leader, he doesn't really want the responsibility of bad decisions falling onto his shoulders. Instead, he makes lewd comments and gestures, all the while meticulously weaving in his point so that people subconsciously take his advice. He ESPECIALLY loves talking about people's love lives, and revels in all the nitty gritty, down and dirty details that anyone will give him about anybody.

Two of his favorite lecherous ploys are the notorious 'skirt flip' by snagging on of his spinneret rings onto a girl's (or male, depending on if his shirt/kimono is short enough, since he does enjoy looking at well sculpted abs too) skirt and letting the string stretch only JUST far enough where he cannot be directly blamed/suspicious. His SECOND most favorite antic is simply walking up to people randomly and saying 'Shag me', just to see their reactions. You never know, sometimes you get a hit in all those painfully slapped misses. o 3o

__________DONT CALL ME TOOTS >/
Although he has a fondness for dressing like a female, simply because he deems it more beautiful and elegant, he LOATHES when people speak to him as if he were female no matter how androgynous he looks. If you bother him about it enough, his bottled up emotions burst out in one powerful blast. Not magically, and not exactly physically, but he'll lose his temper at you. Which you do not want him to do. Suriously.

It doesn't just bother him when people call him female though, it bothers him MORE and silently kills him when people TREAT him like a female. He is no delicate flower, and dislikes having doors opened for him, chairs pulled out, or any manner of chivalry whatsoever. He also dislikes when people call him 'gender confused', simply because of a hobby or two. Wearing a dress doesn't mean you've been neutered and want to be treated like the china dolls you make.

__________Smile For the Audience
While he's a willing conduit for the feelings of others, Rin refuses to talk about or acknowledge his own heartaches and daily pains. He goes drifting through life as though nothing is wrong. When someone questions him or tries to feel the waters for his personal problems, he gets out of it by either flirting, or simply becoming quietly 'content' as he often appears when he's deep in thought. He busies himself with his dolls during this time, pouring all his worries, hopes, and dreams into them, which sometimes affects their nature if he ever chooses to make them 'move' vis his spinnerets and 'chi'.

For example, Pai Long, Rin's giant steed. He was created during a time of great stress and anger. Thus, Pai Long reacts to these feelings as well, and acts sporadically and sometimes violently when Rin is angry or highly upset. It is not something the doll consciously does, nor something that Rin controls.

An additional problem for Rin's tendency to think of the problems of others and simply put his on the shelf is that eventually, there is that one straw that breaks the camel's back. When that wall of indifference and mask of content breaks, Rin's moods become explosive. It is best to avoid him during these rages, as he often says and does things he normally would not do, for the SOLE purpose of hurting others emotionally and physically. He doesn't care who he takes out his cares on, as long as their lives end up just as convoluted and messed up as his. It is the main reason why he chose to leave his family behind, for fear of hurting his younger siblings and mother again. He does not give the same amount of care to anyone else, even those he calls friends, and it would take great lengths for someone to be put in the special category of 'immune' to his fits of rage and malice.

Unique Attributes :

Hobbies

__________DollMaking
Ever since he was a child, Rin loved making dolls. He'd stumbled upon the craft one day when his younger sister Hatsaya accidentally tore her cloth doll in an argument with another little girl in the village. He figured out how to sew, and took care of it so his busy mother would not have to, and found that each time Hatsaya broke it, he grew to love fixing the doll more and more and even started making additions and improvements to its design. Eventually, he started making whole new dolls from scratch, both cloth and mechanical, wood and metal, small and large, lunarian-esque or beastlike.

Upon discovering his 'gift' of manipulating his chi effectively, he started 'sewing' with his spinnerets, improving on his dolls even more so. Now, not only could he effectively multiply the wear and tear of a normal doll and make it more durable and hardy, he found he could make them 'move' much like a puppeteer and his marionettes. All he had to do was move his fingers appropriately, and will them to do as he pleased. He's still a little clumsy at finer movements, but he frequently makes larger animal-like dolls for transportation as he has absolutely no desire to WALK all the way to his old village to vist from the city, and then walk back. Yet he doesn't have the facilities for a REAL beast of burden, which make the dolls much cheaper and easier to house due to lack of biological needs and functions.

__________Tea Master
While Rin's doll Workshop is in the back of his upper middle class estate in a warehouse like structure, in the front and under the actual housing area (he lives upstairs) is the Tea Parlor. Everything sold there is made exclusively by Rin himself, and he takes great care with his teas, meticulously planning and preparing them as he does everything in his life. He truly believes every problem can be solved with a well brewed cup of tea and the right herbs for the occasion.

He also bakes small cakes and other such tiny treats once a week to sell at the Parlor. But he will only let you buy something that compliments the tea you're drinking, so the buyer must choose wisely on both accounts because some treats and teas he only offers at particular points in the seasons. Not only does he have tea available for immediate consumption, but if you'd like to enjoy his brews at home, he also makes 'custom made' teas catered to each individual that comes by. He makes them in mass supplies, for however long you'd like to have the tea around, but prefers orders in one-month increments. Simply because it's easier to measure.

The door is always open, and Rin is always willing to lead an ear to his patrons or a meeting place for his allies there.

__________Equestrian
At a tender age, Rin learned how to ride a horse out of necessity. When you lived in a rural village and worked on a family farm, you had to know how to ride the family horse out to the fields where the equipment was waiting, or to pick up some supplies from a neighboring farm.

Because of this, he has an affinity for large beasts, and while he no longer prefers horses over other animals, he loves to tame and ride any type he can find. Currently, he's made his own riding companion in Pai Long, a strange and massive beast that resembles a lion of some sort but is about the size of a large pack horse.

__________Literature Enthusiast
No one exactly knows how Rin gets his hands on rare and unheard of books, but somehow he does and he POURS over their pages with a lustful enthusiasm. From herb books to grimmories and fables of magics unknown, he seems to attract only the most interesting quarries by questionable means. He stays mum on just how he acquires these things, but he's been known to make random quotes or sly references to them, which simply pass over everyone's head if he hasn't already told them about it before.

In some ways though, his new roundabout way of thinking due to these inspired books actually help him to explain things to others better, as he's picked up the nuances of subtle persuasion from their pages. These rare artifacts are oftentimes found within Lunarian meccas of business, and Rin is willing to bend over backwards for a rare old Lunarian tome.

__________Cross Dressing
Rin is adamant that his chronic cross dressing is a HOBBY instead of a LIFESTYLE. He does not deliberately act like a woman, though he may look androgynous and quite pretty in woman's clothing. He simply adores elegance and beauty, coming from a background that was the exact opposite as a child. He was also teased as a child when he wore boys clothing, since his face and figure simply looked too delicate for those clothes no matter how masculine his features and personality could be.

When he started wearing girl's dresses early in his preteens, he found people accepted his opinions slightly more, even if they had to be reminded from time to time not to treat him like a girl but simply as a very very pretty young boy. It was simply easier to deal with the MILD teasing of wearing girl's clothes and being seen as a 'manly girl' as opposed to being a 'girly boy' while the boys who had teased him before stole glances and blushed whenever he turned to look.

History

In the Saotome household there are five beautiful daughters, ah--forgive us, FOUR beautiful daughters and one incredibly lovely SON.

Even from a very young age and when wearing boy's clothing, Rin was often considered pretty enough to be a girl. Several times well-to-do families approached the Saotome family with an offer to simply BUY Rin and adopt him into their families on the thought that 'she' would produce lovely children and be favored for 'her' fair looks in the Legion courts. But though Rin looked androgenous with feminine tendencies, his parents did not love him less, and his father did not treat him as if he was a delicate flower. In fact, he worked him harder on their lucrative farming lands because of it.

Rin's father, Tennyo, always instilled in his children that they should NEVER make someone else do something they were not willing to as well, and Rin was schooled in this doctrine the most. Quite often you could find the pretty young child tending the abundant fields like a full grown man, or steering the horses as they plowed the fields in the Spring. As the oldest, and only son, it fell to Rin to care for the family alongside his father. He learned from his father how to manage the business, how to make a business grow and gain partners, and many other life skills that he still uses in the present day. In his life, Tennyo was one of the two the most influential people to little Rin.

It was only when his father caught a strange and unknown disease and passed that Rin's troubles truly started. At the age of ten, Rin had to take over the reigns of the business with his mother's help, to keep the family farming fortune vibrant and healthy for his mother and sisters to live off of after he went off on his own path someday. But despite his major accomplishments at such a tender age, the other young boys of the village did not take kindly to him because of his beautiful looks.

One day after a frightfully bad bout of teasing, Rin had broken down in the barn sobbing over his troubles and scratching at his face in an effort to mar it, only to be walked in by an elderly farm worker. The old woman was the second most important influence on Rin's life, and helped him change it for the better.

The woman (whose name Rin still does not know no matter how hard he searches for her) mistook Rin for a young girl, as her eyesight was not as keen as it had been in younger years, and appalled at how such a pretty little girl was trying to hurt herself and wearing BOYS clothing no less, promptly ushered the girl into the stables and picked out a female stable-hand's kimono. It was short, and cropped, and nothing like the pants of the boys, though it had leggings for modesty's sake. Perhaps it was the mothering way that the woman had ORDERED him to change that made him obey, or perhaps he was too distraught to care at the time, but when he saw his reflection in one of the water troughs, he could only blink in surprise.

It somehow felt RIGHT to wear these clothes, and though he didn't look distinctly male (as if he ever did), he didn't exactly look female either. He could move better and more freely in these clothes, and to be honest, he secretly thought they were cuter. After a lifetime of being rough and dirty, and not being taken seriously because he was just a 'pansy boy' based solely on appearance, being a half-girl didn't seem so bad. When he came home, his mother had to do a double-take to make sure it was her son, and even felt him up to be sure of gender which only elicited giggles from both him and his then six year old sister, and second oldest child, Hatsaya. Amazingly, the more his mother and aunt listened to his pleas for girls clothing, the more the boys of the village started leaving him alone, and the more heads he started turning as he grew older and prettier by the day.

Males and females alike were looking his way, and were treating him differently. No longer was he everyone's whipping boy because he was the 'delicate flower' of the boys of the village. His inner strength and fortitude were finally recognized, since his behavior was so obtuse from the other normal girls and so aligned with all the normals BOYS his age. He was able to to roughouse, tell raunchy jokes, flirt, and work just as hard as any other male, and soon enough his nickname became 'tomboy' instead of 'pansy'. Which suited him just fine, quite frankly.

After discovering his joy for plants and sewing (completely by accident and only because he was being a good big brother to Hatsaya) he took a portion of money from home and went to the city with his mothers and three younger sisters blessings*, bought a large duplex with a medium sized warehouse attached to the back, and used the upstairs level as living space while opening his own Tea Parlor downstairs. After a few years, he's gained a lucrative business all on its own, and no longer needs allowances from his mother and the family money. He uses the warehouse to construct both large and small dolls of various materials and makes.

Ask and You Shall Receive :: Q & A

Q:: So how old is Rin anyways?
A::

Rin is a bit of a late bloomer for an academy student, enrolling at age 20. He went out to live on his own at 17, and just recently in the last few months got on his feet enough that his parents no longer need to send him an 'allowance' from the family fortune.

The business isn't really that large (hell, he lives above his shop, think like........those cute little Chinese food places that have apartments over them, and only room for four or five tables inside), and the warehouse is sorta like a large shack out back where he stores things/works. So he's not some genius entrepreneur that's made this huge effing tea house. It's sorta like a mom and pop store at the moment.

Q:: He can't control Pai Long yet, can he?
A::

No, he can't at the Academy level. During this time period while I'm getting his rp requirements done, he'll be working on producing/finishing Pai Long as he's been working on the big cat for a WHILE now, as it's quite an undertaking to get all the appropriate pieces for him. Pai Long is constructed with a 'framework' of a copper/crude iron mixture, and has crude iron claws attached to this frame. While Rin's no delicate flower, he's also not He-Man strong, so he gets tired while working with such heavy pieces and it takes him a long time to construct larger dolls. So technically Pai Long isn't even FINISHED yet.

But at the next stage level, he will be completed, and then Rin will be able to 'move' him, though it will be quite clumsy at first and Rin will not be able to utilize those iron claws of his. As of right now, he has only two small sized dolls that 'help' him around the shop. Think a little bit bigger than the laptops in Chobits (such as Kotoko and Plum/Sumomo), they're a bit bigger than that but not incredibly so.

Their skin is made out of pale, soft animal skins, so it looks like real flesh, though you can see their small seams, they also have a light fully copper 'framework' to keep them sturdy/able to lift things and actually help. They're mostly like little mascots at this point in time, and run back and forth for dirty dishes, and tea ingredients, though they're still a little clumsy and drop things occasionally. They wear little kimonos to match Rin, and are named Di and Ko respectively.

Q:: Just how does Rin get these rare Lunarian books he loves to collect?
A::

They've become sort of a black-market collectors item sort of deal.

Rin has indebted himself through 'favors' to various shady organizations that sell the books to either the highest bidder, or the person willing to do the most insane things as favors later on to get it. It isn't that he knows anything more than anyone else does, he just goes to great lengths both physically and monetarily to obtain these strange and wondrous books written by the ancestors of the Lunarians.

*These are completely Lunarian books.

Beejoux

Wrathful Demigod

PostPosted: Thu Apr 22, 2010 7:55 am

I don't know why you make me do this..

Let's see if I can be any help at all.

I like his name, and the reason behind it. I also think that the meaning, while not fitting his personality, fits his physical appearance. He's pale with blue hair.

He's reason for being on the side of the nobles is valid and reasonable, though short. Though I'm not exactly sure how you could expand on it.

His weapon is extremely original and well thought out, and you already know I think it's bad a**. I'm just not sure if he'd be strong enough to control something the size of Pai Long at academy level.

His personality traits are unique and well balanced. They work well with each other and paint a vivid picture of how he behaves. His faults are obvious.

I like his hobbies (Specially equestrian ;3), For the most part they are very unique. A lot of Lunnies do read, but you've made it different by having his choice of material hard to come by and not of their world.

His history seems sound and fairly complete. I'm sure you could expand on things if you wanted, but I don't see that it needs it. It explains his drive and ambition, and the reason behind the ladies clothing.

I can't find anything that really needs work. x.x I'm sorry, you're just too awesome for me.

general info

User Image
i agree with bee, i really like his name. its simple, rolls off the tongue, and no one is going to forget how to spell it! it definitely works with both means (the sound reminds me of him, definitely, strong yet beautiful, and the meaning 'cold' is very literal to his appearance).

alliance

for some reason, i could never see rin as a supporter of the legion. he has this attitude about him that just screams 'change'. his reasoning, while agreeably short, is understandable. rin does not remind me of a warrior, so it is not surprising to me that his reason for being part of the noble cause is because of something so simple as 'they need to learn to change'. im not really sure if you can fill the reasoning out any more, and i wouldn't tell you to. its prefect and simple, and it just fits. <3

personality

User Imagerin is a spit-fire isn't he? i love his sparky, interesting attitude. i was a little 'eh' at first with him being a pervert and a sage (okay, maybe im just kinda biased against them because of their cliche use in animes), but i feel that you can make it work!

and while ive seen quiet a few profiles with characters who are blunt, yours actually kinda has a nice reasoning behind. you dont just say 'hes blunt, thats all, end of story', but actually kinda give us an idea of why and when and how...if you get me? it works on rin, and it definitely matches his who self.

and and and! the whole bottled up feeling thing? i really like it, i like it a lot, to be honest. again, it is something that i can see you working out and doing just right (it is a difficult thing to write, really. you don't wanna make your character to unemotional, you know?), and i cannot wait to see rin in action! im really rather excited.

hobbies

User Imagei, again, agree with bee, a lot of lunarians do read, but you have, once again (/bows down to you) taken something that is used often and have made it your own. it love that he has all this books no one has ever seen, and all this 'outsider' stories. its wonderful, creative and puts a whole new spin on reading as a hobby. its almost like he's a book collector and admirer, instead of a bookworm.

the doll making is a fascinating hobby, i will tell you! its something unique and really strikes interest. though, i as well am wondering if rin would be capable of controlling ki well enough at academy age to actually move such a large beast like Pai Long.

history

Rins history is wonderful. it really explains a lot. im not sure if this makes sense but...its like you wrote the history just to write the history, instead of writing it to just explain everything else. it feels real, and i love it all. though it might just be me, but im curious as to how old he is? im not trying to be rude or User Imagewhat not, but i have a little difficulty wrapping my head around an academy-age lunarian running a tea business, let alone making dolls as well? perhaps if he had helpers or business partners it would be more understandable.

but at the same time, perhaps it is common for young men and women to head out on their own where he is from. all people vary in work ethics, i suppose!

overall opinion

i adore rin, and i give you a round of applause for such a fantastic job! it was a joy to read and i really cannot wait to see him in action! truly and honestly!

btw..sorry if this fails. OTL

Mmmkay here we go.

His name is interesting, a little different meaning than usual, which is nice. While I like that he's not violently opposed to the Legion, I find his reasoning for him being on the Noble side a tad weak, and needs some expanding on.

His weapon is very interesting, quite unique and unusual, and I am interested in seeing how it could pan out.

As for his personality, they seem to work well together except for the "sage" trait. "Sage" a little over-the-top and this part:

x___Doctor Ruri
Despite his carefree appearance, he's quite intelligent, and is a sick cross between the Caterpillar and the Mad Hatter (don't ask how he got a copy of the book, nobody freaking knows how he gets 'Outsider' literature) and oftentimes quotes literary figures that most Lunarians are not familiar with, making his 'advice' seem like near crazy ramblings, but he's a good listener/thinker none the less.

is quite obscure and does not fit in with the Lunaria culture at all. "Outside literature" seems to be implying that Rin has these secretive, magical ways of knowing things that no one else knows, and it just seems awkward and a little unfair to others.

I love that he's this peverted, flirtatious cross-dresser, yet still knows when to be serious and hates being treated like a girl. Unusual, yet unique and interesting.

I am not quite sure how this "Pai Long" creature works out. A quicky sketch might help to better understand what it looks like?

His hobbies are unique as well, though again with the books that no one has heard of. While it's okay that he has a habit of getting rare books that no one else has, modern books such as Alice in Wonderland do not fit with the culture and stand out a little too much. It does not make sense with the Lunarian storyline.

His history is well-rounded and well thought out, and it fits well.

It needs a little reworking, but otherwise quite unique and well-thought out. Nicely done.

I'm.........not quite sure what you mean by 'knowing things others don't magically', Kuro. o Ao? Elaborate?

I tried to explain the book thing in the Q&A, but he is NOT Dumbledore yo. o 3o He doesn't simply "know" things, he just makes analogies connected to the books he's read, which don't make much sense to people who HAVEN'T read said book.

It's like if you quoted one of your favorite stories in a witty/amusing way relevant to the conversation, yet I'd never heard of it so I was just like *headtilt* WHUT? o ^o? /is afraid I'm not being clear enough?

I understand your intentions with it. The only thing I had issues with was the "outsider books" and references to modern books, such as Alice in Wonderland. It simply doesn't make sense to have them in Lunaria.
PostPosted: Thu Apr 22, 2010 2:41 pm

So, I'm here~

I read through it all. I think its well thought out. I had a little confusion with the Pai Long. But over all the history was good, and I liked the uniqueness of weaponry.

Like Kuro, I have a little confusion on the books. And you might want to address Alice in wonderland by it's older original name, if it's suitable. Since "Alice in Wonderland" is a newer name for it.

Lol. Oooooookay, now I understand where you're coming from better. :3

I only used that particular book because I like it first and foremost, and secondly because I wanted everyone to be clearly aware that these are HUMAN books he's getting his hands on through questionable means (I knew everyone would immediately know/understand due to the popularity of the title), not just rare Lunarian books, but books that have come up on the shore through wreaks of ships/cargo of humans and found their way to Lunaria.
