Is Lamia a monster, a woman, a vampire, or a witch? Tales are told that combine all of these. Commonly, she is a demon who roams at night, invading households to drink the blood of children. Sometimes she steals children from their beds. It may be that she transformed into half-human, half-serpent by her frief over the death of her children. In some cultures she is linked to the Lilith, a night-demon who can appear as an owl, and disturbs people in their sleep. She can bring upsetting dreams and even disease and illness.
