Hunting.

Draug Faroth is a pack which is founded upon a strong sense of loyalty, to its members and its territory. To reinforce the ties and bonds between each wolf in the pack and also to their territory Draug Faroth hunts together.

It is the hunting captain’s responsibility to arrange pack hunts, in OCC and IC, (See the pack members sticky) though it is the alpha male and female who will lead the hunt. Through hunting together, the pack will have to work as one to bring down its selected prey and then also feed upon it according to rank; which solidifies the important pack structure.

Pack hunts will appear in the packs sub thread as an ORP and all the pack members, bar the pups and pack mother, are free to join in. You may also find links to any ORP hunts below. PRP hunts can be arrange with a select few wolves, if targeting medium sized prey, by visiting the hunting captain.

Please note, any member of the pack is free to hunt smaller prey as these breed quickly. Though medium and larger prey you must arrange with the hunting captain as he/she over sees the prey’s levels and manages them accordingly as not to deplete the stock levels in the packs territory.

Prey:

Wild boar (Razorbacks): Boar can be found both on the open plains and the forest hunting ground, though far more commonly in the forest hunting grounds. They are medium prey and can be taken down by at least two wolves if the target is an adult and healthy, if the target is young, sick/injured it is possible for a single wolf to take it down. Care needs to be taken when taking down large boars (males) as they can be very aggressive and female defensive of their young, it is therefore better to attack its hind quarters than attacking its throat. Because of its level of aggression it tends to be hunted more so by then pack when its numbers are male dominant.

Dall Sheep: Dall Sheep are found on open ridges, meadows and steep slopes with extremely rugged ground. Dall Sheep are medium prey and are brought down by attacking the throat, severing the wide pipe or jugular. It is more common prey for single wolves than a pack.

Bison: Bison can be found on the plains; they are nomadic grazers and travel in herds. It is not wise, even for numerous wolves, to tackle a healthy adult, so a herd will generally need to do some observing before hunting to be able to pick out a weaker target, either a younger calf or a sick/injured female. This will require the whole pack to hunt, with a least 5 wolves in the hunting party and at least 2 males. They are brought down by attacking at its hind quarters, tearing into the muscle and causing large blood loss, weakening the target.

Deer (White Tailed): Deer can be found both on the open plains and the forest hunting grounds. They are medium prey and can be taken down by at least two wolves if the target is an adult and healthy, if the target is young, sick/injured it is possible for a single wolf to take it down.

Elk:
Elk are only found in the forest hunting ground, often found grazing small shrubs and grasses. This will require the whole pack to hunt, with a least 3 wolves in the hunting party and at least 1 male. They are brought down by attacking at its hind quarters, tearing into the muscle and causing large blood loss, weakening the target.

Moose: Moose are only found in the forest hunting ground, often found grazing small shrubs and grasses. This will require the whole pack to hunt, with a least 3 wolves in the hunting party and at least 1 male. They are brought down by attacking at its hind quarters, tearing into the muscle and causing large blood loss, weakening the target.

Rabbits/Hare:
Rabbits and Hare are found on both the forest and grassland hunting grounds. They do not require the pack to hunt and are only ever hunted by a sole wolf. Hare are a lot quicker than rabbits and are never really preyed upon much.

Salmon: Wolves are capable of hunting fish though it is a skill, like any form of hunting but it is not something all wolves master well. A grown wolf will require a lot of fish to satisfy its hunger so rarely will a wolf go to great lengths to catch fish.

Of course there are always exceptions to these rules; larger prey, such as an elk, has been known to be taken down by a single wolf multiple times. Though the risk of injury to the wolf is higher and the success rate of bringing the prey down is less, so it is not always worth the risk.

Females tend to be better at chasing prey, though males are more adept at wrestling large prey. So while the pack is predominately female the pack with hunt the likes of elk, moose and deer more so than when the pack is predominately male, specialising more in hunting bison.
