I'm hoping to inspire some activity in the guild, though I doubt many of you share my interest in Scott Walker.

Anyways, Scott Walker is basically my favorite musician ever. He started out in the sixties, in which he sang some baroque pop style ballads, which were excellent. Later on, he pretty much withdrew himself from the music industry and only came out with a few sporadic releases. His work of recent, most notably his 1995 album Tilt and his 2006 release The Drift feature very intense, nightmarish music with experimental and dissonant composition. I think it's awesome stuff.

Anyhoo, I'm just trying to generate some interest in my favorite musician and get the guild going again.

Some videos of his early work:
Rosemary
30 Century Man
Big Louise
Duchess

Some of his later work:
Jesse
Famer In The City
Cossacks Are
Rosary

Here's an interview, too. I thought this was interesting. He seems very relaxed and down-to-earth, considering his eccentric reputation.

I admit I just can't get into Scott's music, just way too dark for me. That said, I always enjoy checking out different artists and learning what music makes other people tick thus I appreciate you sharing Scott's work.

One thing I found interesting was his choice to relocate to the UK and his subsequent success there. I've been wondering lately why it is that some musicians are more or less successful in certain countries than in others. Is it a function of the musician(s) and/or their style of music, the culture of the country, good or bad marketing?

It's definitely music you have to be in the right mood for, but I find the intensity of his sound to be extremely captivating.

Interesting you should mention how some American artists find success in the UK. I suppose its not unheard of for some up-and-coming artists to get boxed out by other, more successful musicians who are currently dominating the industry. For example, my grandfather gave me a CD by a singer named Jimmy Roselli, who was a traditional pop singer contemporary with Frank Sinatra. Supposedly, Sinatra used his influence to prevent his success in America. However, I imagine situations like that are at least somewhat less prevalent in modern times, considering the marketing power of the internet.
