Gym Leader Bio!
Name:
Almus Rayne
Gender: Male
Age: 21
Appearance: Almus wears heavy black boots, black cargo pants, a tight fitting silky black shirt, and a long black weathered trench coat that has protected him many times over the years. He hides his pale complexion beneath his long dark brown hair that stretches all the way down to his belt. His eyes are dark and cold.
Bio: A social outcast from Twinleaf Town. When he was young he befriended a shinny Gastly who was a social outcast from other Gastly. Now, together with his Scyther, the three of them fight for the rights of the misunderstood and unloved.
Personality: Almus has nearly a split personality between a well modest natured, aristocratic gentleman and something else that is much crueler, placed in him in his early childhood by abuse and neglect. He is a kind hearted romantic but he is also the type to press an advantage and has a temper that doesn't know when to let up once started.
Gym Location: Private Reserve (Megalopolis, Rayne Reservation)
Gym Style: UV Blacklights, Long Grass, Brimstone, Soft Sand.
Gym Type Advantages: Ghost, Grass, Fire, Ground, Rock.
Gym Badge: The Brimstone Badge. A diamond shaped yellow design embroidered over a dark purple circle.
Pokemon: Haunter, Scyther, Kabotops, Ditto, Porygon Z, Garchomp.
On my own side note, I consider my Haunter and Scyther to be fully evolved.

"Hey, what's that over there?" A young girl asked her friend as they walked along together.

It was a warm day in the middle of autumn and the sun was shinning down brightly. Two teen aged Pokemon trainers were heading down the bottom of Route 217 from Snowpoint City, having each just earned an Icicle badge. One was a red headed girl from Veilstone, named Laura. The other girl named Leslie had a long brown ponytail and was visiting the area from Goldenrod City in the Johto region.

"What?" Laura said confused.

Leslie let out a sigh and tugged her friend by the arm to the side of the road that dropped down like a little hill top. Pointing way off into the distance there seemed to be a large dark building standing off in the middle of no where. "That! What is that over there? I don't see it on the map."

"Oh that..." Laura giggled. "Well that's Rayne Reserve, the megalopolis."

"The mega-wha?" Leslie said confused. "How can that be a megalopolis? I don't even see how it could be a city... or even a town for that matter. Where are all the other buildings?"

"No no no. You've got it all wrong. This is a megalopolis for Pokemon, not people. This whole area north of Eterna City, from there to where route 217 meets 216, is private land owned by the Gym Leader Almus Rayne. He had the landscape of this whole region altered to make it a perfect place to live for his Pokemon. This is a resort sanctuary for all his Pokemon. Think of it like big safari zone but you aren't allowed to catch Pokemon here. All of the Pokemon here are already caught and owned. He keeps his Pokemon out in the open here instead of at the Professor's lab."

Leslie was looking at her friend in bewilderment, trying to take all that information in. "Oh wow. But wait... if he keeps all his Pokemon here instead of safe at the Professor's lab then doesn't he have to worry about poachers or Pokemon thieves?"

Laura chuckled, "Nope, not at all. Not in this place. His Pokemon might actually be even safer here. You see, the entire property is filled under the ground with a large cybertronic network of sensors. That network takes surveillance over every square inch of ground level, underground, and in the air. The whole thing runs on solar power, dozens of windmills and geothermal energy so it never goes down. Also, there isn't just some some geeky tech nerd watching over it, who could fall asleep on the job. The entire system is maintained and run by Porygon. No one knows exactly how many he has but each one is specifically programed to maintain the security network and signal an alert if there is ever a problem. Then I think he has a psychic Pokemon teleport whatever he needs to deal with the situation."

Leslie stood there for a moment thinking about it. "Hey didn't you say that this guy is another gym leader?" Excitedly she started pulling her friend off the road and towards the direction of the large building.

"Hey!" Laura shouted. "Now hold on a minute. This gym leader is supposed to be really really tough." She said struggling. Leslie however, would hear none of it. They had just gotten one badge and she was pumped up to get another. Laura eventually gave up and followed along as they made their way to the building.

After a very long walk, they found themselves standing at the entry doors to a very large citadel. "The Asylum..." Laura said. "That is what the gym leader calls it. Inside is a huge Colosseum. This citadel that looks out over the whole property was built to house the Colosseum. Most Colosseum houses open up during tournaments or battles but this one never does."

Leslie looked as if she had lost her nerve. "It's not... like a real asylum inside, is it?" She asked with a shaky voice.

"I don't know. I've never been inside. I do know though that at night or on a stormy day when it gets really dark, this whole area is supposed to be covered in ghost Pokemon. This gym leader loves them."

Suddenly Leslie shrieked back away from the doors. "Oh ew, I hate ghost Pokemon!"

Laura turned to her and frowned. "Oh come on. You were the one who dragged me all the way out here when I wanted to just walk by. You aren't going to chicken out now. We already took down Fantina, the ghost gym leader and survived so this shouldn't be a problem either. Besides, just because he owns lots of ghost Pokemon doesn't mean he is going to use one on us. This gym leader is supposed to be like an all-star fighter. He doesn't choose his team by their type. He battles in his gym matches with the same team of Pokemon that he used back when he was just a Pokemon trainer like us."

Nodding softly they both walked through the doors together. Once inside, they both stopped to look around at the room they just entered. It was a large room made almost completely out of a very dark marble. On both sides of the room there were a series of matching doors with a complex locking mechanism branded across each of them. In front of them was a double staircase that led to an upstairs floor but the staircases were closed off with a velvet rope. In the center between the staircases were a pair of very large oak wood doors that had the word 'Welcome' engraved across them. Last, there was a plaque engraved into the floor in the center of the room for all who enter to read.

Laura walked over to it and reading it aloud said, "Welcome one and all to the Asylum of Rayne Reserve. If you are an invited guest then please make your way up the stairs as Rayne's Haunt awaits you. If you are a Pokemon trainer seeking a gym battle for my badge then please proceed through the large oak welcome doors. Rest assured that the gym leader is already aware of your presence and waiting for you."

Meanwhile ~

In a dark room all alone a man sat comfortably by a fire place. Suddenly a shadowy figure phased partially out of the wall, beside the man's ear. "What? Trainers? Two girls you say? They each have six badges?"

A moment later ~

"Well let's do this." Leslie said to Laura as they pushed the large welcome doors open. Before them was a very long hallway with a light at the end. The two girls looked at each other in confusion. Laura took a step forward and said, "Maybe this is the entry hall to the Colosseum? You know, like the tunnel at stadiums that athletes run out of?" Leslie nodded and they started their walk down the surprisingly long tunnel. However, the closer they got to the end of the tunnel the more eerie the destination ahead began to appear.

"Oh I should probably tell you." Laura said as they continued their long walk. "I called this place a Colosseum for a reason. I've read about this gym before but I've never actually seen it. This is a dome shaped area, not rectangular like most gyms. I don't know how big this building is but I have read that the Colosseum itself is supposed to be 200 feet high at the center point of the dome's ceiling and the battle floor is 300 feet around." She said excitedly.

"Whoa." Her wide eyed friend exclaimed. "Why does it have to be so big?"

"The gym leader wanted an enclosed gym but he didn't want a place that would limit a Pokemon's potential attacks. He measured the height and destructive range of attacks like Tornado and Hyper Beam from the Pokemon of previous League Champions when he designed this gym. Pretty much any move you can think of you are free to use in here just like as if you were outside." Laura however, was cut short from her descriptive tale as they suddenly stopped wide eyed at the end of the hallway.

The two girls entered the Colosseum and were overtaken by the sight of its interior. The space was massive. It was a large dome designed just for battling only and didn't even have any stands anywhere for spectators to watch in safety. There were 'blacklights' covering nearly the entire ceiling, casting the gigantic room in a purple illumination. The girls were somewhat unnerved realizing that the gym was lit with black lights instead of regular lighting. Their skin glowed brightly in the luminance, as did the battle field displayed before them.

As they stepped onto the arena grounds, soft sand crunched underneath their feet. The entire field could be seen clearly from eye level but there were different heights and thicknesses of long grass all around. The grass however, glowed a frightening red from the UV-reflection of the black lights. Amongst the grass there were many large rocks scattered around in a good number of places. Even the stones were glowing an odd yellow color that seemed intensified by the black lights.

"What kind of place is this?!" A very astonished Leslie asked.

"This is my Pokemon Gym!" A male's proud voice announced. The two girls jumped in shock as the man walked toward them from out of the long grass. He was tall, with broad shoulders, had long dark hair that flowed gracefully down his chest and back, and he seemed young for a typical gym leader. He dressed all in black, had a very worn looking black trench coat draped over his shoulders and his eye color was unidentifiable in the lighting. "I am Gym Leader Almus Rayne, and I welcome you to the Assylum."

The two girls jumped in surprise but then looked back and forth from each other in confusion. Almost in unison they both stammered out, "But, but.... what kind of gym is this? It looks bigger than the Pokemon League arena. What's with these lights? This place can't be legit. This place is insane!"

"Insane? Well... this place IS called the 'Assylum' after all." Almus chuckled. "I do assure you though, that this gym is sanctioned by the Pokemon League. Please allow me to explain the details of this arena." He said calmly.

"The first detail that you have no doubt noticed, is that this is an indoor gym lit with black lights instead of normal lights. The ceiling does not open up but is constructed large enough to suit most any flying needs." He stepped toward them and turned so that he was facing the gym in the same direction they were. "As for the black lights, you might be thinking that it makes this gym unproperly lit because the light isn't white, but take a closer look around. ... Are there any areas that are difficult to see?" Laura and Leslie frowned, but then did as asked. Suddenly their expressions softened as they realized the man was right. Even though the gym was lit with a dark light, there was a lot of it. There were so many black lights that every portion of the gym glowed brightly. There was no problem at all regarding lack of illumination.

"As you can see," Almus continued, "this gym is probably the most well lit gym you will ever battle in. These aren't just normal black lights either. They are UV-lights. They supply all grass type Pokemon with the effect of a Sunny Day. If you will look at these glowing stones around you, this is brimstone or as otherwise known as sulfur in its raw crystal form. They are very flammable so if a fire Pokemon ignites these, then fire Pokemon will benefit from the Sunny Day as well."

Almus began walking away from the girls as he continued to speak. "There is a small amount of atmosphere held within the dome so a Rain Dance or even a Twister can effectively be created inside of here as well. You might also notice that the ground on which you stand is very soft. If you have any Pokemon that know how to Dig, they will not have a difficult time doing so here. Likewise of course, this ground makes it very easy to create a Sandstorm if desired."

Stopping some distance away from them now, he turned around and saw the overwhelmed looks on their faces. "To simplify things: grass, fire, ground, rock, flying, ghost, and weather effected Pokemon all have different advantages on this field. While that is the case though, no Pokemon types are at a disadvantage on this field compared to any other regular gym." The girls nodded, seemingly able to understand that version better.

"Um sir?" Leslie rose her hand tentatively as her little voice spoke up. "I have a question... um, where are we supposed to battle?" But the gym leader and her friend Laura looked at her confused for a moment. She then realized the ridiculousness of her question and waving her arms said, "Oh no, I know we battle here but what I meant was... where are we as the trainers supposed to stand? I don't see any boxes marked out on the floor." Laura mouthed a little 'Oh' and then both the girls looked to Almus Rayne.

He chuckled a bit as he wore a comfortable looking grin. He smiled as he replied, as if this were something he greatly enjoyed explaining. "When you are traveling out in the wild... do you need a box marked on the floor to tell you where to stand when you catch a wild Pokemon?" The girls bit their lip as his words smacked them right in the face. "You stand anywhere you like, but you do it on the battlefield you share with your Pokemon."

"Right then!" Laura suddenly shouted out. "Let's do this then! Did we come here for a talk or did we come here for a Pokemon Battle?" She said with a look of fire burning in her eyes. Leslie picked up on her friend's energy and rose her fist in front of her dramatically.

Clapping his hands together Almus responded by saying, "Excellent, excellent. That's the spirit that I like to see in my opponents. I wish you both the best of luck against me. Now, which one of you would like to battle me first? Unless of course... I normally hold one on one matches with six Pokemon each, but I would be willing to accept a double battle with you two if you would like. Three of your Pokemon each against my six, a two on two match. What would you like?" He said with a hopeful grin.

"A double battle suits us just fine!" The girls said together in perfect unison. They grinned both thinking, "He has no idea what he is in for."

"These girls have no idea what is in store for them." Almus thought silently, his emotions unreadable. The two girls took a few steps apart to give each other room and stared defiantly towards their opponent. Still thinking to himself, "They look confident. That's good. They've double battled before, I can tell."

Suddenly a new voice broke out over the field as a woman's laughter could be heard. Laura and Leslie looked over to the side of the field to see a woman standing there with a hand raised over her smiling lips. She had long beautiful hair, she too was dressed in black, wearing a long elegant dress. Her skin seemed very pale by how well see glowed in the black light compared to anyone else. "This ladies, is my beautiful wife." Almus announced.

Leslie looked at him in shock. "You're married!?"

Almus frowned. "Do you find that so hard to believe? You don't think that I live all the way out here by myself do you? Furthermore, she is not just my wife but she is also the official judge for this gym's Pokemon matches."

Suddenly Mrs. Rayne spoke up. "Oh hush you, these girls didn't come hear to listen to you talk all day. Now is everyone ready?" She asked, getting to the point. The gym leader and both challengers nodded. Mrs. Rayne continued, "Alright then. This is to be a two on two match, consisting of six Pokemon on the gym leaders side and six Pokemon on the challenger's side. Each of the two challengers are allowed the use of only three Pokemon. The match is decided when either the gym leader or the dual challengers have lost six Pokemon each. The challengers are allowed to make substitutions but the gym leader is not." Again both sides nodded. "Begin!" She yelled, stepping back to watch.

Almus stood up straight but was grinning sinisterly as he spoke. "You look like two very capable little trainers." He said, lowing his arms down to his belt and pulling out two pokeballs. "It's a shame that I am going to have to cut you down to size. Scyther, Kabutops, here we go!"

"Scy!" "Ka'buu!" His Pokemon screamed out menacingly as they took the field side by side. Their well practiced weaponry hung dangerously out towards the two girls. Scyther's green skin glowed a dark red in the black lights just like the grass and Kabutop's rock exterior was grayed a bit from the unnatural light.

Leslie stood a bit startled. "Nice pair." She stuttered surprised. Not a moment later though, she was confident again and shouted out, "Ok, let's do this! We'll show him a matching pair also!" She cried as Laura and herself released their first Pokemon.

"NidoKing!""NidoQueen!" The Pokemon roared.

Laura however, was staring intently upon the gym leader's Pokemon. Having taken this time to study Almus' Pokemon carefully, she now quickly announced, "So it's a female Scyther and a male Kabutops. Leslie, you take the bug while I take the rock Pokemon." She nodded as Almus smiled impressed, clearly able to see the rage of gender Rivalry in Leslie's NidoQueen as it looked at Scyther and Laura's NidoKing as it looked at Kabutops.

Leslie spoke up now, "Time for our signature opening move!" The girls nodded to one another and shouted in unison. "NidoKing use Poison Jab! NidoQueen use Poison Fang!"

The two ground titans hunched forward and then sped off together, side by side. Their formation was rehearsed and perfect, causing a wide sweep of poison horns so that in either direction there was no room to dodge.
"Nido, Nido, Nido, Nido, KIINNNNGGGG, QUUEEENNNN!!!!"

"This gym battle has begun..." Almus said in a low, dark tone. That was ended though when he suddenly yelled out, "Scyther, Kabu, use Swords Dance!" They both nodded but then turned towards each other as they raised their blades. At first it looked almost like they had started attacking each other but it could quickly be seen that the two bladed Pokemon were using Swords Dance on each other instead of just themselves. In seconds their agility increased as they danced around, skimming the tips of each others blades together to sharpen them both at the same time, effectively causing a double Swords Dance effect from the two Pokemon. "Great now dodge!" Almus yelled at the last second, thankful that NidoKing & Queen aren't the fastest Pokemon on their feet.

"That's not going to work!" Laura yelled out confidently as the two ground Pokemon anticipated Scyther and Kabutops leaping to the sides. What they didn't expect though was Scyther using the Fly attack to dart straight up into the air while Kabutops used Dig to burrow straight down from where he stood. At a very close call, both NidoKing and NidoQueen missed entirely.

The two girls gasped out as both attacks failed and Almus spoke up saying, "You have to anticipate that your opponents can dodge in more directions than just left or right. I train my Pokemon here in his dome to give them a sense of all angles, not just back and forth. But now it is my turn, Scyther & Kabutops finish your moves!"

Leslie and Laura looked around as did their Pokemon. "Where are his Pokemon at? I can't see Kabutops underground and I can't make out Scyther in the bright lights!"

Suddenly the earth exploded upwards from underneath NidoKing while a red winged bullet crashed straight down on to NidoQueen, both receiving direct hits from the Fly and Dig attacks.
"THHEEERRRR!!! TOOOPPPPPSS!!!"

Almus' Pokemon backed away quickly as NidoQueen lay crushed down into the dirt and NidoKing fell with a crash from being thrown into the air. "A devasting blow to both of their Pokemon, but not without its cost." Almus thought to himself, seeing small poison barb pricks across both Scyther and Kabutops.

"Oh no! Get up you guys!" The girls shouted as their Pokemon obeyed, but weakly. Laura was the one who stepped up first. "Ok NidoKing, we aren't going to take that laying down. We need to separate those two so get in there with a Horn Attack!"

"Ni-DOOO!" He screamed as he took off running.

Leslie was right there in time with her friend. "Alright NidoQueen, you aren't going to let another girl treat you like that are you? Let's crush that bug like it deserves with your Body Slam!"

"Ni-DOOO!" She yelled, in dual formation again.

Almus could see that just like last time they were blocking off the sides but there was more spring in their step now to be ready for any movement in any direction. "Alright then. You want a closer distance fight you got it! Scyther Kabu, use Night Slash!" Adjusting their stance for more power, Scyther and Kabutops stood ready for dual Nido' charge. Just when they were in range, a black waved double slash attack sliced cruelly both up and downwards against the front of both NidoKing and NidoQueen. Almus however, hadn't anticipated the physical momentum that both challenger's Pokemon would have from being ground types and knowing just how to run along the soft sand to give them more power also. Straight through the Night Slash, a Horn Attack and Body Slam sent both Scyther and Kabutops crashing backwards into the ground.

"Oh no!" Almus called out. He looked up at his opponents and said, "Very good use of your Pokemon's physical weight and power to ram right through my Night Slash like that. You have trained your friends well." He complimented, as his own Pokemon stood back up.

"Quick, we have to attack again. Don't give him a chance to recover!" Laura screamed. She leaned forward and Leslie nodded as they both turned to their Pokemon and yelled out in unison, "NidoKing use Head Smash, NidoQueen use Skull Bash!"

Almus opened his mouth to respond but there was not enough time as as the challenger's two Pokemon pulled off a wonderful combination. NidoQueen crouched to prepare for her Skull Bash while NidoKing ran forward taking the front. He ran from the side towards Scyther who jumped back expecting the impact, but NidoKing just ran past, not giving up his Rivalry assault on Kabutops. Because he came at the side, Scyther saw the attack coming in time but not Kabutops who was toppled head over heals into a pile of brimstone. With Scyther's attention on dodging NidoKing and watching Kabutops get hit, she didn't see NidoQueen in time before getting slammed right in the chest by a heavy Skull Bash. Scyther in turn went rolling right into the long grass.
"KAbuuuuu...! "SCYyyyyy...!"

"Don't let off the pressure NidoKing, attack that Kabutops while it's down. Let's finish this with Horn Drill!" Laura shouted.

"You too NidoQueen. Pounce down on top of that Scyther and use Crunch!" Leslie followed.

Almus stood there watching both his Pokemon on their backs and struggling. Kabutops was try to hold NidoKing back as his horn darted forward over and over again towards Kabutop's rock plated head. Scyther likewise was holding NidoQueen's jaws back from Crunching down destructively against her chest. It was right then that Leslie's confident voice broke the silence. "You might as well call your Pokemon back." She said, as Almus looked up to her. "Our Pokemon have yours beat, just face it. There is no sense in hurting them further."

Almus just grinned. "If I were to just give up, what sort of example would I be giving as a gym leader?" He replied in complete confidence, which broke Leslie's smile. "That is not what Pokemon battling is all about. It requires spirit, strength, and most of all belief in your friends." A heartfelt smile rose over the lips of the struggling Scyther and Kabutops. "This isn't over until it's over! Scyther use Bug Buzz! Kabutops, use Superpower!" Almus screamed out.

Scyther, still holding back NidoQueen's Crunch attack, leaned her mouth forward and screamed a horrible screech. Extending her wings to vibrate back and forth Scyther released a deafening roar right down NidoQueen's throat.
"ScyTH-ZZZZzzZZzZZZZZZ!" The effect made the challenger Pokemon stumble back dazed as her brain vibrated in her skull.

Kabutops likewise looked up right into the eyes of NidoKing. Kabutops screamed out in furry as his muscles beneath the stone exterior began to ripple. Kabutops lifted his opponent clear up into the air and tossed him like a toy right into the freshly attacked NidoQueen.
"Kabu-TOOOOOOOOPS!"

Scyther crawled wobbly out of the long grass as Kabutops limply rose to his feet from the Brimstone. The NidoKing and NidoQueen rose to their feet, leaning upon one another for support. All four Pokemon were exhausted from battle and severely damaged. One more attack on any of them would knock them out cold.

"Superpower eh?" Laura said gritting her teeth. "If you wanna see some power then we will show you some real power! NidoKing, use Earth Power!!!"

Leslie on jumped in right on cue. "Time for our best move! NidoQueen, use Earth Power!!! She screamed as well. Both of their Pokemon stood together and struck the sand. The ground suddenly rose up like a titanic wave that was double strength from the combined use of both Pokemon. It lunged through the air towards Scyther and Kabutops as if to take them both out in one shot.

"Nice combination! Beautiful teamwork!" Almus roared out. "You've seen Superpower, you know Earth Power, but you haven't seen real power until you taste this! Kabutops, Ancient Power!"

"Kabuuu!" He screamed in preparation as his eyes stared to glow an eerie blue. Kabutops reached behind him and placed his claw onto the large brimstone rock. Suddenly, many of the stones around him rose into the air and hurled forward to bash into the Earth Power. "Toooops!" There was a large crash as Rock met Ground and two canceled each other out completely. The sand collapsed back down and the brimstone was scattered back around the arena. The two challengers watched on awe struck as their best combined move was stopped dead in its tracks.

"Ok you two, time to finish this!" Almus screamed out. "I think it's about time that you put your Sword Dance earlier to good use. Let's show these Nido's YOUR best combined attack. Scyther Kabu, use X-Scissor!!!"

Laura choked and Leslie spoke up in confusion. "But why X-Scissor? Our Pokemon are resistant to Bug type moves."

Her asking that question did not stop the attack though. Scyther and Kabutops charged this time, also in a matching parallel form. Except they used their speed and agility to dart back and forth between sides with each other. Their Sword Dance sharped blades shinned brightly in the light as a whirling of metal claws was formed. This was no double slashing attack like a normal X-Scissor. Scyther and Kabutops had twirled their arms together into a twisting open clawed spiral of death.

"SCY-THER!!!" "KABU-TOPS!!!"

The challenger's Pokemon were both hit with a double X-Scissor combo that sent them both crashing to the ground and twisting about in pain from the slashes. They spent the last of their energy squirming from the damage, before both fainting together upon the ground. At this point, Mrs. Rayne spoke up yelling, "Both NidoKing and NidoQueen are unable to battle. Scyther and Kabutops are the winners!"

Laura and Leslie looked on with amazement as they recalled their Pokemon to their pokeballs. "Wow, your Pokemon are really something." Leslie said pulling out her next pokeball. "I think I may have underestimated you when I first came here. That won't happen again though." She said as she released the Pokemon held within the ball.

"Skarmory!"

Laura raised a second pokeball from her belt while saying, "I had heard that you were a tough gym leader but I had no idea that you were this tough. You are really driving us to extend out limits in this battle. You do your job as a gym leader well. However, even though you have won for now this battle isn't over yet!" With those words, she released her second Pokemon.

"Steelix!"

Both of the challenger's steel Pokemon shown purple in the luminance of the dark lights. The Scyther shinning red and the Kabutops shinning gray in the dark lights stared at the new challengers defiantly. Again Mrs. Rayne's voice spoke out, "Round two of this gym battle begins now. The challengers have the first move." Almus watched and waited as the two girls began.

Leslie took the first move. "I'm not giving up on that Scyther Laura. Skarmory, get in there and use Steel Wing!"

Laura nodded as she turned to Steelix and shouted, "Steelix, use Iron Tail on that Kabutops! Sweep it across the field!"

"Steeeeeeel!

Almus was right on time ordering out, "Scyther, fly up and dodge. Kabu, dig down quick! Scyther spread her wings and was able to lift up just a few inches fast enough to successfully dodge the attack. Kabutops on the other hand had only gotten half way down into the dirt before Steelix with amazing speed was able to catch the Rock Pokemon with one of Steelix's steel spikes. Kabutops was slammed across the field and fell unconscious to the ground. "Oh no! Kabu!"

Mrs. Rayne spoke up and said. "Kabutops is unable to battle. Steelix wins!"

Almus smiled, "Very impressive taking out my Kabutops like that. Your Skarmory's speed is impressive but not good enough if you want to hit my Scyther with Steel Wing!"

"Oh I didn't care if I hit your Pokemon with that attack or not." Leslie giggled. Almus looked at her confused. "I was just trying to close the distance between our Pokemon. Skamory use Air Slash!" She screamed out.

With Skarmory now only feet away from Scyther, the Steel Pokemon sliced its wing so sharply through the air that it made a razored wave of wind slam right into Scyther.

"SCYyyyy!!!" The Bug Pokemon screamed out as it was hit by the Flying type attack and went spiraling out of control to the ground.

"Scyther is unable to battle. Skarmory is the winner!"

"Scyther!" Almus stood there stunned as he watched his beloved Pokemon fall to the ground. He recalled both her and Kabutops to their pokeballs and said, "Don't worry, you two did great. I am very proud of you both. Now it's time for you to take a nice long rest." He placed the two pokeballs back onto his belt while pulling out two more. "Your determination and your teamwork are most impressive. You have trained your Pokemon well and you fight good together in double battles. But if you want my Brimstone Badge then you are going to have to deal with much more than just my Scyther and Kabutops." Lifting the two new pokeballs into the air, he released his Pokemon and yelled, "Porygon-Z, Garchomp, come out and let's do this!"

"Garchomp!" "Pory!"

Laura winced, seeing the Pokemon that the gym leader had chosen. Leslie being new to the region looked more like she was freaking out. "Wha- what are those Pokemon?"

"Garchomp!" Almus shouted before anyone could answer her. "The Mach type Pokemon. Mach as in the jetplane speeds Mach I, II, and III. He is a Dragon/Ground type. Then there is Porygon-Z. The Virtual Pokemon. He is a normal type but he is also the third upgrade from the Porygon race. Porygon-Z is also known as the 'glass cannon'.

"Pory-GONNNNNN!" The gym leader's Pokemon suddenly started buzzing as it looked straight at Leslie's Skarmory.

"What is it doing?" She shrieked, quite unnerved.

"Download. Porygon-Z's special ability. When Porygon-Z is called out against a Pokemon with equal or higher physical defense than special defense, like your Skarmory, Porygon-Z's special attack power is increased by half of its total amount."

"What?!" Laura screamed out. "It gains the advantage over its opponent's weakness by half of its own power?! That's crazy!" Leslie looked to Laura a bit worried but Laura shook her head. "It doesn't matter. Your Pokemon can increase their power all you want, we are still going to win! Steelix, let's give Skarmory and us some cover! Use Sandstorm!"

Leslie called out now, "Ok Skarmory, let's make sure that it's only going to take one good hit to take that glass cannon out. Use Metal Sound!"

"Steel-IIIXXXXXX!" The mighty Steel Pokemon rose up and began to spin over and over at great speeds. Suddenly the soft sand began to lift up and swirl around through the air until a large, self perpetuating Sandstorm was created. "SkarMORRRY!" Meanwhile, Skarmory flew up high into the Sandstorm to put some distance between itself and Porygon-Z. Then it began screaming out a horrible metal grinding sound that hurt even Almus' ears. Porygon-Z flopped around a little in pain as his weak special defense was lowered even more.

"Alright you two, you aren't going to let that stop us are you?" Almus said. "Garchomp, use Sand Veil and get over there to Steelix with a Dragon Rush! Pory, ride the sound waves of the Metal Sound like an electric current to get to Skarmory!" With those commands, both of Almus' Pokemon looked like they seemingly disappeared from how fast they moved.

"GARCHOMP!" The mighty Dragon Pokemon roared out as its thick hide suddenly changed to cover itself in the swirling sand. Moving like as if he were a part of the Sandstorm's rage Garchomp flew at Mach speed right into the heart of the Steelix. Garchomp's heavy dragon fins jabbed right into Steelix's body and sent the steel snake flying back through the air behind both of the challenging trainers.

Likewise, Porygon-Z shot off like a bolt of lighting to right in front of Skarmory's face. "Pory, use Tri-Attack with your Adaptability effect!" Porygon-Z used his other special ability to increase the power of his same type attack, not just launching out a flame, electric, or freezing move but the Virtual Pokemon looked like he actually became a fireball, thunderbolt, and icicle when he ran into Skarmory.
"PORY-GON-ZZZZZZZZ!"

Laura wasn't wasting any time after she saw Garchomp blast her Steelix across the arena. "Steelix, you need to hide! Use Dig!"

Leslie was having an even less successful time against the gym leader's Porygon-Z. She watched her Pokemon falling to the ground from the Tri-Attack and yelled, "Skarmory, fly up and counter with NightSlash!" But it didn't help. Skarmory still fell helplessly to the ground, not fainted but completely paralyzed from the hit.

Almus yelled out over the whirl of the Sandstorm. "Garchomp, just keep an eye out for Steelix. When you see it attack it with FireFang!" Turning more of his attention to Porygon-Z who was getting continually smacked around by the Sandstorm he yelled out, "Pory, let's finish that Skarmory now! Use Conversion and follow it with Lock-On!" The Virtual Pokemon suddenly started to glow and then turned yellow, changing into an electric type. Then began to carefully zoom right in on Skarmory.

"Leslie look out! Porygon is getting ready to use his strongest attack!" Laura screamed frantically. "Steelix quick, help Garchomp to 'chill out' so that we can help Skarmory!"

Leslie heard Laura's warning and pleaded frantically with her Pokemon to get up. "Come on Skarmory, try flying up with Steel Wing!.. No? Counter with Air Slash then!" She yelled as Skarmory was finally able to wobble to its feet but still shocking with electric paralysis.

"Pory!" Almus screamed very quickly. "With your Adapability effect now that you are an electric type, use Zap Cannon!"

"PPPRRRRRRRRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!"

Porygon-Z screamed out as it fired its Zap Cannon. Porygon-Z had huge special attack power to begin with but with the added effect of his Download ability the electric bolt that was shot off looked more like a yellow zigzagging Hyper Beam. Then as Adaptability kicked in also, the blast got so much bigger that the black light of the gym was temporarily canceled out from the brightness of the flash. This light was just in time to show the split second action of Steelix shooting up out of the ground to where Garchomp was flying.
"STEELIX!!!" The Steel Pokemon roared with an Ice Fang attack bearing up at the dragon. "GARCHOMP!!!" The gym leader's Pokemon roared with a FireFang bearing down at the steel snake.

Seeing the colessle Zap Cannon bearing Locked On right at her Skarmory, who was weak against electric attacks to begin with, she screamed out in a rush, "Ok you beat my Skarmory!" She said pushing the button on her pokeball to recall her Pokemon. Garchomp and Steelix hit mouth to mouth with their FireFang and IceFang.
"STEEEE!!!" "GARRRRR!!!" "EEELLL" "RRRRRR" "LLIIXX" "RCHOM" "XXXX" "OMP!!!" The fire and the ice met right as the Zap Cannon touched down. The two fang attacks exploded against each other, likewise the Zap Cannon erupted against the ground. The two blasts combined into one huge explosion that swept across the entire gym.

"WAAHHHHHH!!! All combatants screamed. Almus was thrown back to into the long grass from the explosion as the two girls went tumbling head over heals across the soft sand.

The blast as so massive that it completely destroyed the force of the Sandstorm and dropped all the flying dirt back into place. The gym leader and both girls stood up dazed as they tried to look through the settling smoke. There on the field lay a collapsed Garchomp and Steelix, both struggling but failing to get up. Porygon-Z floated up in the air just fine, having avoided the blast and suffering no damage other than the Sandstorm and Metal Sound, but Skarmory was no where to be seen.

"Darn it!" Almus thought to himself. "There is no way Garchomp can battle like this. He isn't fainted yet but I know any attack he attempts right now would fail unless I can fill him with some sort of energy to continue the fight! ... Wait, that move might be just what I need!" Almus walked back up to the battle field and grinned.

"My Skarmory, where is my Skarmory?! Did I get it back in time?" Leslie said panicing.

Almus however, didnt want to waste the opportunity as he saw Steelix getting back up. "Garchomp, use Outrage!' Garchomp thought over all the pain he was suffering. He looked up into the eyes of Steelix and became enraged. In a blind angry determination, Garchomp stood back up mentally ready to battle but then limped back down to one knee not having enough energy to physically perform the Outrage attack. "That's ok Garchomp. You did perfect. I just needed you on your feet again! Let's finish this steel Pokemon, use Giga Impact!" Garchomp took a breath and then took off with that same rage still in his eyes.

"Steelix, don't waste any time! Use whatever you have left and let's have a Dragon Breath!" Laura screamed.

"What?! Impossible!" Almus yelled, taken totally by surprise with that command from the challenger. Steelix looked right into Garchomp's direction as his steel fangs began to glow with a blue flame. Garchomp flexed his dragon muscles and broke the barrier of 'Mach I' with how powerful his Giga Impact was. Steelix just had enough time to blindly blast a pulsating blue flamethrower like attack out right into Garchomp as the dragon still rammed against the steel snake from the built up power.

Leslie was beside herself and didn't register any of this. She held Skarmory's pokeball in her hand and when she tried to open she was relieved to see that she had indeed called her Pokemon back. She was horrified though as her Pokemon returned back to the pokeball on its own before it even finished materializing.

Garchomp and Steelix impacted with a harsh fiery clatter and went toppling and twisting over one another across the full length of the Colosseum's massive arena. They came to a crashing stop on the ground just short of slamming into the Colosseum wall, both completely fainted and severely injured.

There was silence as everyone just looked around at the scene. This battle had built up to a very intense climax point and was now followed by an even more powerful silence. The one who broke was Mrs. Rayne with a shaky voice. "Um, Gar-Garchomp, Steelix, and Skarmory are unable to battle."

Those words seemed to jolt everyone back into their senses as Laura and Almus recalled their Pokemon. Laura noticed Porygon-Z still flying up high in the arena and went into an angry rage spouted, "LUCARIO! AURA SPHERE THAT THING OUT OF THE SKY NOW!"

"LUCARIOOO!" Suddenly a blue fox looking Pokemon in a mask appeared on the field, screaming ready to attack, and launched a energy ball from his paws that tracked in on Porygon-Z's inner aura. The blast hit right on and knocked the glass cannon out of the sky with only one hit.

"Porygon-Z is unable to battle. Lucario wins!"

"Empoleon!" Came a deep call as another Pokemon appeared beside Lucario from Leslie's pokeball.

"We aren't done yet." The words came from Leslie's lips with startling confidence and certainty. Almus and Laura both looked at her as she continued. "We've suffered some heavy losses this match but so has he." She said looking to Laura, Leslie now taking up the inspiring role. "You and I have never lost a match that we have fought together. I don't believe that we are about to lose now."

Laura stood straight up and smiled a heartfelt smile back to her friend. "We have never been pushed to the wall this hard before. This gym battle is the toughest challenge that we have ever faced together. His Pokemon may have been tough so far but they aren't unbeatable."

Leslie spoke up as if finishing Laura's sentance. "They fell one by one and so will his next two! Empoleon and Lucario are the evolved forms of each of our starting Pokemon and they are also our strongest Pokemon!"

Laura yelled back, "Right! We can still win this!" Both girls looked at the gym leader defiantly, refusing to give up.

"Hehehe... Hahaha. Very good. Very good indeed." Almus said, clapping his hands. "I can see now how you two were able to earn your other badges. You two are very good. It is a very rare happening when a trainer or trainers get this far. However... you haven't seen my strongest or my own starter Pokemon yet either!" Almus suddenly hurled two pokeballs out into the air. "Ditto, get in front of Lucario now! Haunter...." A dark grin crept across his face, "make yourself known..."

"Dit!"
"Haunt haun haunt!"

Both girls looked up in shock. "AH, oh no! A Ditto!" Laura growled. She then thought silently to herself, "Hmmm. Why did he specifically target my Lucario with his Ditto? Oh well nevermind."

Leslie bit her lip as she looked on. "Haunter, he does use a ghost Pokemon."

It was Mrs. Rayne who quickly spoke up next. "This is to be the final round of this Pokemon gym battle. No more Pokemon substitutions are allowed. The winner of these four Pokemon will decide the match. The challengers are allowed to make the first move. You may begin when ready!"

"Ok Lucario, let's start things off with an early advantage. Use Quick Attack on Ditto now before it can finish transforming!" Laura yelled.

"Lu-rooooooo!" He roared as he shot off towards the pink blob.

Leslie looked on at the ghost Pokemon and couldn't stop staring at his mouth. "Something looks wrong about that Haunter's color. I don't trust it. Keep a safe distance and use Bubblebeam!"

"Emmmmm-plo, plo, plo, plo, plo, plo!" The penguin bubbled as a massive watery wave was created.

Almus clenched his fist while still grinning. "Ditto Transform and use Counter! Haunter, your know what to do!"

Ditto didn't waste a second and immediately began to glow. He swirled and sparkled as Ditto grew in height before taking shape. The transformation into Lucario finished just in time. The Quick Attack landed, putting Ditto into a spin that he swung right back around into the originial Lucario.
"Rooo! ... LuCARI!" Laura's Pokemon was sent rolling backwards head over heels.

Empoleon wasn't having much better success as Haunter drifted to the side dodging the attack, but then phased out and vanished completely. "Wah! Oh no! Where did it go!?" Leslie shrieked, making Laura look over with increased worry.

"Ok Haunter, you start things off for us. Hit that Empoleon with a Thunder Punch and then a Sucker Punch. Fill that in with a Night Shade as well! Ditto, use Aura Sphere on Lucario!" Almus shouted.

Leslie however was in disbelief. "Hey you can't call out that many attacks at once! There is no way they will all land at once. Empo, look to see where the first attack comes from and then use Aqua Jet to dodge the other two while you counter attack!"

Whether Leslie believed it at the time or not, Almus' combo with Haunter went exactly as he ordered it. From close range down below a lone fist of Haunter's came uppercutting against Empoleon's jaw with electrifying power which lifted the Penguin slightly into the air. Almost simultaneously, a wave of dark energy shot off from a completely different direction behind the water Pokemon while a Sucker Punch knocked Empoleon back down from the Thunder Punch uppercut. Leslie's Pokemon lay dazed on the ground from the same time three hit combo. Meanwhile in front of Laura, both Lucario reached their arms back building up an impressive Aura Sphere and shot them off at one another which exploded together at equal power.

As the smoke from the two exploding Aura Spheres settled, Almus looked at the confused face of Leslie and spoke to explain Haunter's moves. "Haunter is a ghost type and has the unique ability to phase himself out and become invisible. Furthermore, his hands are not attached to his body which means he can fly them around to attack with his head and both hands separately. Fighting my Haunter is like fighting three Pokemon at once."

"That's..." Leslie stammered. "And just what am I supposed to do against that?!" She yelled.

Almus stared sternly back against her. "This is your gym challenge! You can rise to meet your challenge or you can give up and go home! Haunter, let's take that Empoleon down. Use Shadow Ball!"

"Quick Empo, dodge to the side and jump into Lucario!" Leslie screamed to Almus' surprise. A ball of dark energy formed and shot down from straight above Empoleon but the water Pokemon dodged the attack just in time, evading swiping claws coming from in front and behind as well.

Laura didn't miss a beat screaming out as the large penguin came crashing to her fighting Pokemon, "Lucario, grab that penguin and hurl it back up into the air with Force Palm right where Haunter was when he shot of his Shadow Ball!"

Before Laura even finished her sentence Leslie screamed, "Aqua Jet!" The result was that Lucario caught Empoleon when he crashed down and then hurled the water Pokemon around in a circle for momentum before tossing Empoleon with a palm slam on the back, right into where Haunter shot off the Shadow Ball. Empoleon swirled itself in a water ball and successfully slammed Haunter right out of the sky. The ghost Pokemon fell out of his invisibility and crashed to the dirt.

"Ah! Haunter no!" Almus screamed. He looked back and yelled, "Ditto, ExtremeSpeed now!" Suddenly his Lucario shot forward and slammed right into the unprepared other Lucario. Laura's Pokemon went toppling to the ground just like Haunter did. Afterwards, they both struggled a bit managed to rise up from the sand.

"That was a very clever move. I was completely unprepared for such a tactic." His grin had returned though and he suddenly snapped his fingers in the air before saying, "But how well can you battle if neither of your Pokemon can leave the ground?" Haunter suddenly grinned just like Almus was and disappeared again. What happened next though neither of the girls were expecting.

Green and oozy zombie like hands shot up from the soft sand. They grabbed around the legs of both Lucario and Empoleon. Then suddenly the walls looked like they were shifting and swaying while terrible sights of ghosts and banshees seemed to fly through the air.

Leslie let out the first shriek screaming, "Wah! What is going on!?" Laura stood there silently and well composed but Almus could see that she was more paralyzed in fear than standing brave.

Suddenly there were crashing sounds as full zombies seemed to spring up from the ground behind the girls and all around their Pokemon. Suddenly a deep frightening voice broke out as a shadowy demon could be see where Almus had been standing. "Feel the Dark Pulse of my fiendish nightmares! Your participation in this gym battle has come to an end!" The girls looked up seeing no Pokemon in front of theirs. Instead they saw a large demon in the sky and another on the ground next to it. As soon as the words finished, both of the monsters sent off a Dark Pulse that blasted into the two trainer's Pokemon.

"Emmmplooooo!" "Lucariooooo!"

As Laura listened to the crying screams of their Pokemon, she had a thought and suddenly screamed out to Leslie. "What is going on here?! We aren't in some haunted place, this is a gym battle! Dark Pulse is a Pokemon move that both Haunter and his Lucario are able to use!" Leslie looked up from her fright as she thought it over. Laura remembed when this round had started and Almus called out Ditto specifically in front of Lucario before bringing Haunter out. She turned to the gym leader and said, "You targeted my Lucario with your Ditto on purpose to distract it didn't you?! It was just a strategic ploy to keep Lucario's focus off of Haunter wasn't it?! I couldn't figure it out before but I know why now! It is because Lucario can use Foresight and Foresight can see through your ghost's maneuvers!" The shadowy figure standing where Almus had, clearly bit it's lip in a sort of growl. Laura screamed out, "LUCARIO! FORESIGHT NOW!!!"

"LUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!" Screamed the fighting Pokemon as two wide purple beams shot forth from his eyes showing Lucario's line of view. As he looked at the ghouls in front of him they suddenly vanished like darkness in the beam of a flashlight. He looked at the two monsters revealing them to be Haunter and Almus' Lucario, while the shadowy demon was revealed to be Almus himself. He looked down to himself and to Empoleon and soon enough all of Haunter's frightening illusions had been eradicated.

Almus smiled. "I'm impressed. You have some nerve and that is good. Never loose that courage and good sense in the heat of battle that you have. I never expected you to get passed my Haunter's illusions."

Laura growled back, "And now that we know how to stop it, don't you try that again! Leslie, let's turn this battle around! Lucario, match this battle how it should be and use Aura Sphere."

Leslie shouted in matching confidence, "Empo, follow Laura's example and use Hydro Pump!"

"HA!" Almus laughed. "That wont' work! Lucario use Aura Sphere again and Haunter block that Hydro Pump with your Dark Pulse for as long as Empoleon pumps it out!"

Laura laughed now making Almus looked forward in confusion this time. "That would be an excellent defense if you were paying closer attention to the command I gave." Almus looked up to the field seeing the Hydro Pump blasting not at Haunter but at his Lucario. It hit the Aura Sphere dead on but continued to pump outwards, exploding the Aura Sphere and pushing forward to its mark hitting Lucario roughly. Likewise, Laura's Lucario shot off his Aura Sphere right at Haunter in a much faster attack which exploded right into Haunter's face. It still hit being a special type attack but didn't do much damage as it was still a fighting type move. Regardless though, both the gym leaders Pokemon were left laying on the ground, struggling with the last of their energy not to collapse. Mrs. Rayne looked on to see if either Pokemon would faint.

"This is our chance to recover and finish this!" Leslie yelled as Laura nodded. Leslie continued by screaming out, "Empo, use Aqua Ring right now!" Her water Pokemon shot a swirling whirlpool around itself that it swam into and regained a lot of health from the relaxing coolness.

"Emmmmm-plo, plo, plo, plo, plo, plo!"

Laura in turn yelled, "Lucario, get in there and finish his Ditto with Close Combat." She yelled as he Pokemon took off running, exhausted but still with enough energy to continue.

"LUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!"

The gym leader didn't waste a second. "Haunter, Lucario, get up quickly." He watched as his Lucario steadied himself on one knee, ready for the attack but Haunter remained struggling on the ground. Almus just smiled at this as he calmly said, "Lucario, counter that Close Combat with your own Close Combat. Haunter, use Pain Split on the challenger's Lucario!"

"haun,... Haunt,... Haunter!" Almus' ghost Pokemon weezed as both himself and Laura's Pokemon glowed in a eerie blue light. Haunter immediately flew back up from the ground as he healed, while Lucario almost collapsed in pain.

Laura couldn't believe the comeback the gym leader made but she shook that thought off with one last trick up her sleeve. She could see Almus' Lucario pulling a punch back to start Close Combat and she quickly yelled out, "Lucario, switch from Close Combat to Blaze Kick with everything you've got!"

Almus' eyes went wide. "Impossible! Lucario doesn't learn that move!"

Laura gave a grin back to the gym leader as he had been giving her this whole battle. "Your Lucario might not be able to use it mister Ditto Master but mine can because that is his breeding move!"

"LucARIO!!!" With disbelief the gym leader looked on as the challenger's Lucario brought a flaming kick right up between his Lucario's arms and landed the blow up against his Pokemon's jaw. His fighting Pokemon was upper cutted right into the sky and then came crashing with a hard thud. Not a moment later, the Lucario began shinning and shimmering with bright colors as it morphed back into a completely fainted Ditto. "Diiiit..."

"Ditto is unable to battle. Lucario is the winner!" Mrs. Rayne called out.

Almus nodded, accepting the impressive defeat of his Pokemon. "Again, very good. But look at the condition of your own Lucario after that Pain Split sapped his health. ...Haunter, Night Shade attack."

Lucario was down on his hands and knees breathing for air, hardly even able to keep one eye open as he winced through the pain and exhaustion. 'Lucario look out! Get out of there!" Laura called.

"Rrruaaaaaaa!" The ghost Pokemon hissed as he shot forth a dark swirling beaming of ghost magic. Lucario looked up hearing his trainer's call to dodge but simply didn't have the energy. All he could manage was a very weak Force Palm against the attack which did nothing to block the ghost energy. Lucario was sent flying back to the ground, unconscious as his trainer's feet.

"Lucario is unable to battle! Haunter wins!" Mrs. Rayne looked over to Laura and smiled weakly at her. "I'm sorry my dear but you are removed from this battle. Please step away while your partner continues."

Laura nodded and moved back to stand beside Mrs. Rayne while she watched her friend Leslie finish off the battle. "Come on Leslie! You can do it!"

"EMPOLEON!" Her Pokemon roared as it burst out from the Aqua Ring.

Leslie smiled. "Your Haunter might be strong but this isn't going to be an easy for you. My Pokemon was able to spend enough time in the Aqua Ring while you took out Laura's Lucario that it is not almost completely healed. Your Haunter looks like it still has quite a bit of damage on it. One straight shot should finish you!" She yelled confidently.

Almus' grin returned as he said, "And how many sets of three will it take to finish you?" His Haunter matched his grin and disappeared while Leslie scowled. "That's right. With Lucario gone my Haunter can turn invisible once again! Use another Thunder Punch, Sucker Punch and Shadow Ball Haunter!"

"Pfft, oh please." Leslie scofted. "Your tactic might be good but it's not unbeatable. Empo use Drill Peck to get yourself out of there. Aim behind you to the top left!" She said making a random direction guess. It paid off as she saw the two claws coming from the sides both miss while Haunter's body had appeared above and behind Empoleon with an also missing Shadow Ball. Now Leslie had her water Pokemon in the air, side by side with the gym leader's. "Good, right where I want him. Quick Empo use Metal Claw!"

"No good! Haunter grab Empoleon's wrists to stop the attack!" Almus called out. Haunter closed his vile blue mouth and suddenly his hands disappeared from down below. As Empoleon hardened his fins for Metal Claw, Haunter opened his mouth spitting out his hands which grabbed around both of the water Pokemon's wrists. Held tight Metal Claw had been stopped. "Good Haunter now spit out a Shadow Ball right in its face!"

"Aqua Jet now!" Leslie called out immediately. Before Haunter could do anything, Empoleon swirled itself in a spinning torrent of water which broke Haunter's hands away and smacked the Ghost Pokemon back.

Almus yelled out, "Haunter get away! Fly back over here by me." Leslie looked on confused as her Pokemon landed gracefully back to the ground.

Have you decided that your Pokemon is just too hurt while mine is nearly at full health? Are you giving up?"

"Not at all." Almus replied. "My Haunter isn't hurt as badly as you make him sound because if he were then I would be Pain Splitting your Empoleon right now. It won't do me any good to use it yet though. No no I had Haunter put some distance between himself and your Pokemon because I am getting ready to use Haunter's 'best move'." The gym leader went quiet after that as his Haunter hoovered in plain slight in front of him.

Leslie bit her lip, knowing that she was getting toyed with. "Ok Empo, eyes open! We don't know what Haunter's 'best move' could be so watch that ghost carefully so we can be ready for anything he throws at us!"

Grinning he said, "Exactly what I thought you'd say. This battle is over. Haunter use Hypnosis!"

With remarkable speed Haunter glared out sharply sending such a power set of Hypnosis waves out from his eyes that the grass between them bellowed backwards. Leslie didn't have a single second to tell her wide eyed Pokemon to look away before Empoleon went weak in the knees and toppled down onto his back like a statue collapsing.

"NOOOO! This battle is NOT over yet! Empoleon can still wake up!" She cried out, feeling the desperation and fear of losing after her and Laura had fought so hard. "Empo, please hear me! You have to wake up!" But her Pokemon was out cold from the solid Hypnosis.

"Haunter, use Nightmare." Almus said low and sinisterly. Haunter flew closer and placed one of his ghostly hands down ontop of Empoleon's head. Almost immediately the water Pokemon seemed to shake terribly in his sleep as his fully regained health was slowly sapped away. "Good now stack that with Dream Eater also." Almus continued as Haunter put his other hand on Empoleon's head too and began double sapping at the water Pokemon's energy. Looking up at the challenger Almus said, "I said I was using Haunter's best move. Not his strongest. This Pokemon has always had an unusually powerful Hypnosis attack. You were right earlier to say that the battle wasn't over yet, but from the looks of things, it will be in just a few more seconds." He said heartlessly, satisfied with his win.

"Wait, with all that pain during Empo's sleeping he should be able to counter with Snore attack!" Sure enough, not long after Haunter started the large penguin let out a tremendous snore from his beak that was very painful on the ears. Leslie almost sank into the ground though in misery as she watched it have no effect against Haunter.

"Nice try but Snore is a normal type attack, which Ghost Pokemon are immune to of course. Good thinking though." More health could clearly be seen draining away from Empoleon as his body began losing it's energy to struggle.

"Empo! Please WAKE UP!!!" She screamed but it seemed to have no effect. It looked to everyone like this was going to be the end, but then Haunter suddenly stopped. He pulled his hands away quickly, just in time to dodge a countering Hydro Pump from Leslie's Pokemon which had just woken up. "YAY! You are still in this! Go Empo! Hyrdo Pump attack!" Her Pokemon stood back up but slowly and very weakly. It shot off Hyrdo Pump after Hydro Pump but to no effect. While Empoleon was now severely injuried, Haunter was completely revived to full health. He flew backwards to put more space between them and floated out of the way of each attack time and time again.

"YOU CAN DO IT LESLIE!" Came a roaring cheer from the side lines. All looked over smiling, seeing the challengers friend Laura cheering her heart out.

"Alright, if we can't hit Haunter like this then we need to get in closer!" Leslie said. "Use Aqua Jet to get in there fast and then blast him with BubbleBeam. He won't be able to dodge that at close range!"

"PLO-LEEEEEEEOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNN!!!" Her Pokemon screeched, showing off its speed as it soared right for Haunter.

Almus' sinister voice spoke up. "Haunter just stay there!" All looked at him like he has lost his mind. "I had told you before that Haunter's Hypnosis move was his best, not his strongest. THIS is his strongest move." Empoleon stopped in mid air to ready his Bubblebeam while Haunter looked on, mouth closed and grinning wide. "Just as Laura defeated me with a breeding move I will defeat you with my Haunter's." Throwing its head back Empoleon took a deep breath and then began to fire a wide stream of bubbles at Haunter. "Haunter use Explosion now!" Everyone's eyes went wide except for Almus who turned away in confidence. Haunter opened his mouth to reveal a black bomb with a red imprinted skull and a very short fuse burning. Before the Bubblebeam had a chance to land the Haunter exploded itself right in Empoleon's face. Just like the explosion with Porygon-Z, everyone was blasted back off of their feet. One by one each of them stood back up feeling dizzy with their ears ringing as they tried to look through the swirling dust.

When the air started to clear, Leslie found that Empoleon had been blasted far back behind her just like Garchomp and Steelix had. Her Pokemon was now laying face down in the dirt. As she rushed over to see if her Pokemon was ok, Laura cried out making Leslie's eyes return to the field. She couldn't believe it. "Haunter... is still there! Haunter is still there?! IT JUST USED EXPLOSION WHICH IS SUPPOSED TO MAKE THE POKEMON USING IT FAINT AS WELL! HOW IS YOUR HAUNTER STILL THERE!?" She dropped down to her knees, emotionally defeated.

"Simple. Explosion is a normal type attack." Leslie felt the blood drain from her face as Almus pointed that out. "And as you know, normal type attacks cannot hurt Ghost Pokemon."

Suddenly another voice rang out. "Empoleon is unable to battle! Haunter is the winner. This battle goes to the defender, Gym Leader Almus Rayne is the winner!"

As soon as that was said, it brought Leslie back to her senses as she turned back to her Pokemon wide eyed. She held Empoleon in her arms as see saw that he was completely knocked out and several injuried. "You did great. Have a nice long rest." She said returning Empoleon to his pokeball.

There was a long moment of silence that ran loudly through the gym. It was eventually broken by the gym leader as his Haunter flew loyally to his side. "Thank you for coming. You both put up a valiant battle. I am very impressed with you both. You both are very good trainers... But you have lost, and have a lot more training to do before you can truely call yourselves Pokemon Masters." Both girls looked up to him suddenly as he said, "You are excused."

Leslie looked up at the ghost Pokemon, staring into his big terrible eyes and vile blue mouth. The next thing her or Laura knew, they had been teleported some how to the Eterna Pokemon Center. Being now in natural light again instead of Almus' blacklights, it hurt their eyes to look around. It was a huge shock for their system to change lighting so suddenly and they did feel as if they had just been released from an asylum.

They both sat on the floor as that is how they were teleported in and Nurse Joy looked over when she saw them suddenly appear. "Oh now, not again. Not more trainers..." Laura looked up at her, assuming this is what commonly happens to all Pokemon trainers who lose at Almus' gym. Nurse Joy turned to her medical staff saying, "Chansey quick, we need stretchers for Pokemon of unknown size and number, as well as for trainers who might be somewhat traumatized."

"Chansey, Chansey!"

Laura heard that and nodded, sure that this was a regular occurrence now. She stood up feeling fine though, just sad for her Pokemon getting so injuried and that she lost her gym battle. Looking over to Leslie though she saw what Nurce Joy seemed afraid of.

Leslie was sitting on the ground biting her lip as she stared off terrified at seemingly nothing. Her mind played that last sight of Haunter in her head over and over again as she whispered to herself, "No more..." over and over again. Their pokeballs were taken by the Chansey and Leslie was laid down upon a stretched and taken into the back to calm down.

Nurse Joy suddenly suddenly stepped up beside Laura and placed her hand on the young trainer's shoulder. Laura looked up into the nurses sorrowed face. It was right then that Nurse Joy asked, "It was his Haunter, wasn't it?"

The room was dark but full of energy. The fireplace burning quietly blossomed streams of light all dancing elegantly along the walls and furniture with their soft orange glow. The subtle sound of ice swirling in a glass could be heard as the man in the reclining chair brought his drink to his lips and drank deeply from it. The only other sound in the room was a gentle background music coming from an antique record player further back in the room. The vinyl record emitted a cascade of classical music to softly bond off the walls and into the man's ears. There in the tranquility of his dark room the man was in complete bliss from the serenity of his solace. However, spending the day with such moments placidity were not the only joys of this man's life.

"haun..." Came a soft growl from through the wall behind the man's chair. His head slowly raised more attentively as a shadowy claw behind him lifted to be placed upon the back of his skull.
"Haunt, Haunt..." No words could be heard through the room but the man psychically received the message loud and clear.

"So, my old friend Cerebus is making his way towards the Asylum is he? Then I guess I should get ready to great our guest..."

~ ~ ~

Several pairs of eyes watched as Cerebus pushed open the front doors of the Asylum. His Aggron plated shoes clanked through the room as the breeze behind made him quite the dramatic sight. "Almus? You home?" He called aimlessly.

Invisible hands closed the doors behind Cerebus after he had entered. Not a moment after, softer padded shoes than Cerebus' began walking joyfully down the grand staircase before him. "Cerebus my old friend. How wonderful it is to see you. Are you here on a social call? You haven't been brought here on business have you?" Almus laughed at the usual joke that he always said to Cerebus when they see each other, a joke based upon the fact that Cerebus was a well known Team Rocket Admn. "Would you like to come on upstairs? Perhaps have a drink or maybe rest your feet? I know that it is quite a walk across my grounds to the gym."

"Would you like to come on upstairs? Perhaps have a drink or maybe rest your feet? I know that it is quite a walk across my grounds to the gym."

"No, but thanks, I just needed some distraction from my normal life style, my employees are eating me alive. So, anything exicting happed here?" Cerebus said, giving his friend a manly hug. He then looked back

All of the sudden, one of the Pokéballs on Cerebus' sleeve opened and realeased Weavile. He looked around the room, his keen eyes trying to spot something, then his gaze stopped, think he found what he looked for.

***

A few hours ago, back at Cerebus' gym.

Cerebus was sitting at his desk, running through some files for Team Rocket when his secretary entered. Cerebus aknowledged her presence without even looking up at her.

"Sir, there is a call for you, its rather urgent." She spoke.
"Put it on the screen." Cerebus said, not even looking up from the paper.
"Yes sir." She said, before turning around and returning to her desk.

Cerebus turned around on his desk chair and looked at the screen, where a man was visible, smoking a sigar.
"Vito, what do I have this honour for?" Cerebus said.
"Ah yes, Cerebus, its about the experimental machine you are using, that Battle Bracer. Some scientist where running test on the emotional recator and where wondering, what if they had to fight a friend?"
"And your point is?" Cerebus asked.
"You will travel to your friend, Almus Rayne, his gym, and challenge him for a fight. I don't care how or what, just do it, and the cash will roll."
"That is all, I think I am capable of that. Cerebus out." Cerebus said, turning of the screen. He got up from his desk chair and geared up, it was a short flight with Flygon, so he had all the time he needed.

But before he left he went to a location in his private estate where only he was allowed.

"Ah I see." Almus chuckled. "You want to talk about employees eating you alive? Go try being the one to feed my dragon Pokemon, haha. I've almost lost a hand more than once."

Almus leaned down and took a seat on one of the steps to his staircase. He lifted an eyebrow curiously as the Weavile was released by itself but then he looked back up to Cerebus.

"Nah, nothing too exciting has been going on around here. I mean taking care of all my Pokemon on a daily basis never stops being exciting for me, but I am sure you meant if anything out of the ordinary has happened." He gracefully lifted an arm to brush his long hair out of his eyes. "Just the usual challengers ever couple of weeks or so. Nothing special. I haven't had to give out one of my badges in awhile if that is what you mean."

Almus looked back down to the Weavile who appeared to be looking at something. "So what about you? Anything new going on for you? How's work?"

Cerebus showed a faint smile at Almus' failed joke.

"Pff." Cerebus puffed at Almus question. "I really regret placing my gym high up in the mountains, I get what? 5 challengers per month at the max." He dropped his head in his hand. "To make things worse, I got engaged, there goes my spare time. She is a nice girl, put I need time to myself. Sometimes I wish I was till travelling around the world, you know, seeing places, causing trouble."

Almus ran his fingers through his long hair. "Yeah, I know what you mean. My gym is pretty far out there too because I needed the land but at least the Citadel can vaguely be seen from the road. I do miss having our adventures after everything that we had been through together. Man... we had some WILD times, didn't we?"

Almus then stood to his feet and proceeded to walk up the stairs saying, "Well come on then. If you just came over to sit and chat, we might as well do it in my chairs instead of my staircase. You can tell me all about this little lady of yours. Engaged huh? Well congratulations my friend."

"Bah, I didn't come here to wipe my social life on your face. I was wondering if your still as good like you were back in the day." Cerebus said, twirling Weavile's empty Pokéball around his hand before recalling it inside his personal Pokéball, extracting him with a dark beam. "So what do you say? Its not like I'm going to travel here everyday."

Almus suddenly stops his accent on the stairs and looks back over his shoulder grinning. "Well that's more like it. To the Asylum then."

~ ~ ~

The two combatants stood staring at each other from opposite sides of the enormous field. The black lights shown down above them blanketing the field in its eerie glow. The tall grass looking red waved in the artificial atmosphere that was built for the gym. The sulfer stones glowed brightly across the field. Yelling out Almus called, "This will be a six on six match with no time limit. Whoever defeats all six of the other's Pokemon first will be called the winner."

"Ditto!" Almus' first Pokemon calls out as he is released from his pokeball.

Narrowing his eyes Almus said, "Whenever you are ready friend..."

((Do you mind if I do your move aswell, there's not much you can do right now.))

Cerebus' smile widdend. He grabbed his first Pokéball from his arm, a dark yellow one with two lightnig dashes crossing it. He enlarged it and with a yellow flash, his first pokémon materialized. "Manectric, do your thing." Cerebus said. "Man!!" The wolf-like creature barked. Knowing Almus had little choice but make his Ditto transform into his Manectric, he recalled him as soon as Ditto had transformed into Manectric. He pulled a seconed Pokéball -this one colored in a desert like color, with a pair of wings covering the main section- from his arm and enlarged it. "Flygon, get out and use Earthquake!!" He yelled as soon as the gaint bug-thing appeared. It quickly nodded and sped forwards, grabbing Ditto/Manectric in its fore-arms and circling upwards, ready to drop the copycat like a rock.

(I don't mind you making my Ditto transform for me, but you never finished through with an attack. You only launch what you are planning to do and your opponent is the one who tells you how it works out. Also, that wasn't an Earthquake attack you used, it was a Seismic Toss which Flygon isn't capable of learning.)

"Manectric huh? Looks like this is going to be a shocking beginning. Ditto do your thing." Almus said casually. But no longer than after Ditto had transformed did Cerebus suddenly recall his Manectric. Almus watched curiously as suddenly he came out with a Flygon. "Hmmm very good strategy. Turn my Ditto into an Electric type and then use a Ground type against it, a Flygon of all ground types. He said chuckling. "But as you should know, I am no novice Ditto trainer Cerebus. Ditto, Transform!" He called out. Suddenly Almus' Manectric started glowing as it had before and then changed into a Flygon, diving just out of the way before Cerebus' Pokemon could reach it.

"Flygon!"

"Ok Flygon, it's our turn! Let's start things off with something he won't be able to dodge. Use Supersonic!" Almus stood there unwaveringly as his flying Pokemon released an earsplitting screech throughout the entire gym.

"FLY-GGOOOONNNNNNNNNNN!!!"

((Aah, okay, I get it.))

Very cheeky of Almus to pull of a move like this. Bad part about this is, Almus knows more or less every move Flygon uses, including Supersonic.
"Flygon, dodge it with Dig." Cerebus said. It was rather logical dig wasn't going to have any effect, but that was part of the plan. Cerebus grinned as the ground behind Almus' Flygon broke open and Flygon burst out of the ground.
"Perfect, now use Dragon Wing." Cerebus said. Flygon nodded and came up behind the other Flygon, wings glowing white and his claws covered in a dar purple glow...

(Cerebus... there is no such attack as Dragon Wing. Now because Flygon doesn't learn any Wing attacks I am going to assume you meant Dragon Claw from your Pokemon's claws turning purple. Look here here for what Flygon CAN do.)

Almus was completely caught off guard when Cerebus had his Flygon use Dig. The Supersonic no doubt failing completely. Almus had to think fast. "Ditto forget trying to find it! Ready a Dragonbreath! If Flygon gets anywhere close to you, burn it down right in its face! Make sure the paralysis gets through!" Almus hadn't finished yelling out to his Ditto yet by the time Flygon flew up out of the sand. Both trainers finished their command at the same time, neither having enough time anymore to call out anything else.

They both watched as Cerebus' Flygon landed a Dragon Claw attack right to Ditto's chest and Ditto breathed a heavy Dragonbreath right down over Flygon's face targeting his eyes and mouth as he was trained to do so.
