Hey, I'm here. My week's been okay. I guess I can't complain, since I got a welcome break from one of my classes this week.

That's cool. So has there been anything that's come up in our few week break that you found you would like to discuss?
PostPosted: Sun May 09, 2010 5:23 pm

Well, I guess since it's Mother's Day, now is as good a time as any to discuss the importance of being appreciative and honoring toward one's parents. We had a lot of talks about that today in sacrament meeting and it made me realize that I'm not nearly as helpful to my parents as I should be.

That's a good subject for the day. So what are some of the things that you learned today about on how to honor and appreciate your parents?
PostPosted: Sun May 09, 2010 5:34 pm

Well, I learned that I should stop being so dependent on them. My eyes were opened to just how difficult parenthood is for them and how hard they have to work, ceaselessly, every day of their lives for years to raise us, and in return we take them for granted, don't heed their advice, are ungrateful and selfishly ask for more of them when they've already given us all they have. So from now on, I'm going to try my hardest to not be a burden on them at all, especially financially (I just hope I can find a job soon so I can hold true to that promise).

That's cool. I realized how much I depended on them the other year and have tried to be less expensive for them... then I started my senior year and signed up for college. But I keep trying on being less financially burdensome for them. So good luck on your endeavors.

To honor our father's and mothers is a commandment from God “Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.” (Ex. 20:12.) so we should strive with all our might mind and strength to do that.

So what are some other things that you are going to try in order to further honor your father and mother?

Well, I'm going to be more cooperative when they need my help with something, and not grumble and complain so much. I'm also going to be more independent, and not expect them to want to spend time with me just because I'm bored and want someone to hang out with.

That's a good start, and I bet that this will help you in the future.

In the June 1982 New Era Hugh W. Pinnock said "I remember when I was washing the car as a 17-year-old young man, my father came out to the driveway and, with justification, began to criticize me for something I had done wrong. I became upset and turned to dad and said something like, “Hey, let up, dad. This is the first time I have ever been a teenager.”

My father, in a beautifully sensitive way, said, “Hugh, this is the first time I have ever been a parent.”"

I think this is something that everybody needs to learn and try to apply in their lives, nobody is perfect and everybody is still learning.

What do you think about this?

That's very true. I've found that we have a tendency, possibly due to their ubiquitous presence and influence in our lives, to think of our parents as superhuman or something other than fallible mortals, and so we become inordinately upset with them for not living up to those inaccurately imposed images of perfection. It does take a huge shift in thinking to realize that they don't exist to fulfill our needs; that they're just as much people as we are and we have to take our lives into our own hands so we can get out of their hair and stop running up their credit card debt.

That's so true.

Is there any other comments or concerns that you have?

Nope, not really. Thanks for hosting the discussion. See you next week.
