Dire Valoe - Fanfiction "End of a Golden Age" - WINNER
Éclair sat patiently and silently in his large chair while he spoke with the other few grown ups in the room. Her Papa’s room was usually a very cheery place. But now, it was quiet, as if they were all waiting for something terrible to happen. All the other grown ups were in armor that was dull and stained with blood, and she curiously wondered why. Éclair tried getting the attention of one the grown ups she recognized. He always played with her when Papa was busy, he was one of the best swordsmen in the entire kingdom.
He didn’t seem to pay attention to her. He was also covered in blood and some wounds. The golden pin on the hilt of his sword was the only shining object on him. His entire armor suit was dull and covered with dried blood. It seemed extremely old with all the dirt as if it was going to fall apart at any moment.
Éclair hummed a song her mother would sing to her at night, a lullaby passed down through their generations as everyone but one soldier walked out. Éclair didn’t pay attention to what they were all talking about. Just something about Monsters.
“Sire,” the last soldier talked quietly. “They have taken the main bridge to the castle. They have begun a siege. If what Valoe said is correct, I estimate that the army taking the town will be here by daylight, and we will be over run.” Éclair paid a bit more attention now, she could hear distant noises that were drowned by the large white walls of the castle. The King grimaced, the air was cold and silent. Before leaving the chamber, the soldier knelt on one knee and said, “for Hyrule, King Daphnes Nohansen Hyrule.”
Éclair got up and waltz over to her Papa after the man had left. The King stood motionless.
“Papa, what’s wrong?” she asked him and gently grabbed his large hand. He faced her and smiled as much as he could and ran a bit of her lush brunette hair through his fingers. He knelt down towards her.
“Éclair,” he paused. “You…are going away for a bit.”
“Where Papa? Are you coming as well?”
“Im sorry dear…I won’t be able to. I…have things to take care of here.” Éclair burst into tears. She didn’t want to go anywhere by herself. Her father was the only person she had ever since the late Queen of Hyrule had passed away. Her father hugged her. “I know, I know. I’ll miss you too, but don’t worry I promise to see you again.”
She wiped a little tear from her rosy cheeks. “Promise?” she asked weakly.
“Yes…I promise you. Now come on, you must leave now.” The King lifted her up into his arms and tickled her nose making her spurt out a small giggle. He sat her on his bed and went to the large wardrobe, shuffling clothes neatly into a small bag. Surprisingly he was done quickly. He walked back to her. He gave her a beautiful stone.
“Éclair, don’t lose this stone. It’s a very special stone, to everyone in this Kingdom.” And finally he tied a necklace around her neck. It was a Golden Triangle. “Listen to me my dear, protect this with your life. Protect it at all costs, let no one see it, unless they have a pin like Valoe’s. This necklace is very important. Do you understand?” She nodded. “Now rest a bit, it will be a long trip.”
Éclair lied down on the bed, a bit confused as of what exactly was happening. She looked out the window for a good while, while her father sat next to her, praying in a low voice to the gods.
Éclair woke up to a strange rocking motion on a hard surface. It creaked with an old age. She stood up slightly to find herself floating along the river on a creaking rowing boat with five other people that were hooded in cloaks like her. The moon hung high in the sky like a dim lamp with it’s bliss reflecting upon the dark waters. Every motion of the boat seemed as if it would tip over into the darkness below. The castle was behind them, growing smaller with each minute.
One of the men noticed Éclair awake and immediately moved to comfort the small child. “Don’t worry, it’ll be alright. You’ll see your father again. Would you like something to eat?” he asked her sweetly. It was one of her tutors, Ephraim. Ephraim was an aged man, wise beyond his years still. He took direct care of Éclair while the King was away on trips or just busy, and while Valoe wasn’t around to sneak her out of the castle when possible into town.
Éclair nodded and took the bread and nibbled at it. It was night, although everyone was fatigued that they couldn’t sleep. The night slipped fear like a cold knife slowly under their skin. Éclair quickly fell back to sleep. In fifteen minutes they had reached the opposite shore from the castle.
To Éclair, she was going away without a reason to an unknown place, but the men in the boat had been asked to escort and protect her a fair distance from Hyrule. They were ordered to take her into the Kingdom of Calatia, traveling through a path through Death Mountain. Hyrule was at war from a great demon seeking revenge, the King of Thieves. Without warning of any kind, he came only from the ancient legends and brought a swift darkness into Hyrule. Seeking the Power of the Goddesses.
Many believed that the Hero of Time would come back again to save them like in one of the legends.
But he had not yet appeared, and as time passed the people began seeking the faces of their gods in desperation, to save them from a dark fate.
The King of Hyrule decided to hide the Triforce of Wisdom, instead of using it as a weapon of war.
Like an alligator the ship came to rest on the bank slowly but with a sudden stop. Making a slight chaffing noise on the gravel. The cloaked caravan-like group got off the sides, with Éclair now awake again, and they each got on horses that where in a nearby building of the Royal Kindgom, and began riding down a path towards Hyrule field, hoping that the town was still holding against monsters.
The path was boring, yet was ever remembered by the fear that held the adults of the group. Moonlight illuminated the path, making it seem like a dream for young Éclair. And in an instant it turned horrifying. Two of the men were instantly thrown off their horses as they screamed from arrows puncturing their chests. Monsters riding large boars were chasing them. Éclair covered her ears from their insults in their own language that they spat out. Ephraim rode faster, protecting Éclair as best as he could. He himself took three arrow wounds. The path was straight forward and they could see Hyrule field with it’s town situated in the middle. Fire rose from some parts of the town and the glow of the land was no longer white from the moon but crimson from the flames as the moon itself dimmed in the shadow of the smoke arising. This was not their destination, but Kakariko, so the remaining riders turned away from the town and headed towards Kakariko.
There was a sharp pain through Éclair’s body, and next she was weightless in the air. Ephraim had been knocked down by a boar. His horse tumbled across the grass, not being able to pick itself back up for both of it’s right legs had been cut clean off by the boar’s rider. Ephraim stood up and searched for Éclair in the dark. Éclair herself ran towards Ephraim, but soon stopped as he suddenly fell with blood gushing from his mouth and a hole in his stomach. Two swords had been stuck in his wind pipe and stomach. She immediately hid in tall grass nearby as the monsters searched for her.
They seemed feral, searching feverishly and yelling words that seemed terrible in Éclair’s ears. After an hour or so of searching they could not find her. Ever since they had been going farther away from the grass she hid as if some supernatural force had told them a lie on the sighing wind’s breath. Éclair didn’t know what to do. Everyone was gone. She began to cry. Trying to comfort herself, she took out the stone Papa told her to keep safe. It shined beautifully in her tiny hands as a blue star. After feeling better she slipped it back in her pouch and felt the Triangle. That was safe as well.
With every large bang against the temple doors the people would cry out louder to their gods in desperation. Hylians, Humans, Half-Hylians, anyone that was afraid, crammed inside the largest temple in the town and prayed and cried out to their gods to deliver them from the darkness and death that was overcoming Hyrule. The only armed people inside the temple, standing ready for when the door would splinter and unleash the hordes of monsters were two soldiers of Hyrule’s main army, and one knight from the King’s personal force.
“Cry to your gods people! Pray! Ask them to forgive your sins! The Hero of Time has not returned like they have promised, they are angry with us!” yelled the priest who was standing at the altar. His hair was disheveled looking as if he had not bathed in days. His eyes were wide, as if he were trying to peer into the heavens to see the deities, blood form many wounded people covered him everywhere. “Pray and ask why the Hero of Time has not come to save us! What is must this be our fate!”
The door splintered open in seconds. Everyone turned in horror and let out screams that made their throats rip open with blood as arrows came in. One of the foot soldiers was struck down and the other two braced them selves as the mass of monster rushed in growling and slobbering over the floor with fresh humanoid blood from previous killings. The last foot soldier rushed in only to be pushed on the floor and dragged to the outside dark as he screamed for help. In an instant a large number of monsters jumped on him and began ripping his flesh and eating it causing blood to spurt out everywhere as his heart was still beating. The Royal Knight stood fast and slew a great number of incoming monsters. But as soon as his blade moved, he was surrounded ina circle by four monsters. The first one charged at him and he blocked his blow and kicked him off. As he was about to turn around the one behind him stuck his jagged sword through him and pulled it out, making him fall to the ground. Everyone inside had nowhere to run. Some escaped, but none with out damage. Some had missing eyes as they stumbled about the an alleyway, only to meet a dark fall, others crawled without limbs, while others tried to put their intestines back into their bodies, screaming and crying. The temple was covered in fresh blood and bones.
Hyrule’s largest and most important town had fallen. The presence of Hyrule’s army no longer mattered in there, everyone was killed instantly if they encountered monsters from the King of Thieves. Most of his army attacking the town was made up of goblin like creatures that enjoyed eating people alive, large humanoid pigs that did the same, and the most monstrous and terrible were the ones dressed in large armor as knights. Nothing could stand in their way. When they had first breached the town walls, but Hyrule still held strong, entire groups were killed by these giants. Regular soldiers would either stay frozen in fear or allow the giant to run to them, the soldiers would then try to strike but their swords would be stopped either by the giant’s hands or his brute armor. They each had personal favorite ways of killing the pitiful Hylian army soldiers. Most would cut them in half with the greatness of their sword or their limbs or head. Others would grab them by the head and pull on their heads until the head ripped off with a frozen face of pain and fear, still connected and dangling to the spinal cord of the body.
Only few of the remaining defenders stood in the walls of the town, awaiting orders of whether to leave or stand fast only to die. Many of the citizens were trying to escape the town and flee into any hiding spots in the land of Hyrule.
“Sir, most of the town has fallen. We only hold the main plaza and the slums. We cannot hold on any longer, we must flee to Hyrule castle,” advised a soldier. The Captain of the Royal Knights kept silent and thought. They were all cramped in a tiny apartment of the slums, fifteen knights, ten civilians, and most importantly the Captain’s beloved who kept trying to get past everyone but was not able to.
“I understand. I will not allow the rest of the men to be slaughtered. Silas, rally the troops in these slums, and head out to Kakariko. Do not head for Hyrule castle. Kakariko needs at least some time to evacuate if the enemy forces strike there next,” the captain spoke, then turned around towards another soldier. “Rivijah, take six men with you, and go towards the main plaza to tell the others that we are evacuating. Take the underground sewers, it will be safer. Everyone, listen! Help out anyone trying to escape this ruined place, even if it means risking your life. Enough innocent blood has been spilt.” With the last of his words, all the weary soldiers moved out to follow orders. The citizens walked out slowly. The outside road was barren and dark. Only few people moved about. Most were wounded or the dead being carried about. The few soldiers on the dark street were running towards unknown directions with their clanking armor.
“Malon, what are you still doing here? I thought I told you to leave with the last large group at the northern gate?”
“Im sorry, but I couldn’t leave this child behind. I saw her on one of the main roads, hiding behind…one of your Royal Knights. He was dead. Here, I recovered his pin from him. There wasn’t much left, he was clutched over a horse, his body mutilated. Im sorry.” she handed him the pin and brought the girl closer to show him. The captain took the pin in his hands and clutched it into a tight fist and bowed his head while saying some quiet words. He lifted his face and dropped his jaw.
“Éclair! What are you doing here?” He grabbed her quickly and pulled her into a long hug. Éclair was silent at first. “Tell me, what are you doing here?”
She looked at him, she felt safer. “Well, Papa sent me away. I don’t know where too or why, Valoe.” She began to tear up. “All I remember was riding with Ephraim and some others, and out of no where we were attacked by large monsters.” Valoe wiped the tears from her eyes and signaled Malon to get some water. “All I remember is that our horse got hit and I flew in the air and hid in some tall grass while everyone else was being hit by the scary monsters. I was so scared, that I ran all the way into town to hide.”
Valoe hugged her again. “It’s alright now. You’re safe now.” He picked her up in his arms and carried her to where Malon was. Malon handed her the cup of water.
“Malon, I need you to take Éclair to Kakariko. I’m sure that’s where the King wanted her to go. There is a secret section of the wall near here that leads outside, so you don’t need to put yourself in danger.”
“What about you? Aren’t you coming? I can’t do this alone…”
“Please forgive me, I always promised you that I would never leave you again after that time, but I can’t. I need to attend to my duty now, Hyrule needs as many people that can protect her. I need to get back to the King.” Valoe held Malon’s hands and looked deep into her eyes.
Éclair tugged a bit on Malon’s fiery hair and assured her,”Don’t worry, if we get in anymore trouble, the Hero of Time will be here to help us, even Papa says so, right Valoe? He’ll be here?” Valoe kept silent.
He hated all the legends and rumors about the great Hero that saved Hyrule long ago. And how everyone was praying that he would return, and now what? The country was almost destroyed and now the people seeked the faces of their gods. He never believed in the Hero of Time, or the sacred power of the goddesses. To him it was all bed time stories to sleep children to bed.
Malon gave him a sad look and turned back to Éclair, “why of course!”
The main town of Hyrule looked like ancient ruins from the distance Éclair was at. Her and Malon were able to safely get out of the town without running into anymore monsters. They found an abandoned carriage large enough to hold more people than themselves. They picked up three elderly people walking in Hyrule field on their way to Kakariko and some wounded soldiers.
“They say most of them people are running into the mountains. They claim that the Oracle said it was the will of the gods or sumthin,” spoke one of the elderly men to the others. “Sumthin about the rise of a fish-less sea.” Malon drifted away from their conversation when he talked about the sea. It was morning now, but it was still dark. The sky was gray and sighed with melancholy. Everyone was tired. Éclair was asleep next to Malon. The two became quick friends in the couple of hours together. Éclair already looked up to her as a mother. She wondered if she had anything to do with her Valoe, since they were holding hands. But if it came to it, she would let her marry him. Éclair had concluded that Valoe was to old for her anyways, she wanted to marry someone like her Papa now. Her fingers held on to the GoldenTriangle in her pouch.
“Gods of Hyrule, then let it be your will to seal this land away from this world, let not the King of Darkness reign here again!” Another monster was struck down by the King’s sword. “Back to the pits that spawned you moblins!”
Hyrule castle had been over ran. The main hall way lay silent except for the distant battle sounds in other parts of the castle. The King and a few of his personal men had retreated to the underground basement. With the last monster in there slain, they could conceal themselves with the large statue of the ancient Hero. He signaled his men to follow him to the middle. The basement was covered in stain glass windows depicting the ancient sages of old Hyrule. And in the middle, the Sword of Evil’s Bane. They gathered around it. Most of the soldiers staring deeply into it trying to fathom it’s very existence. The very weapon that the Hero of Time had used.
“This sword, is the Sword of Evil’s Bane, the Master Sword. It has long since been protecting Hyrule, but now it’s power is faded. The King of Thieves has killed the two sages that had prayed for the Master Sword to stay in power. The Royal Knights did everything they could to save them…but it was too much. Ganondorf had powerful beasts. And now, he was able to enter this sacred castle. But we will not let him defile this chamber, this castle, or Hyrule! The Hero of Time has not appeared, and I am certain now that he will not. We can not stay here any longer. We must flee this place, and put our fates in the hands of the gods. It is there decision, to seal Hyrule away. They have spoke to flee into the mountains, for Hyrule shall be like a sea at war!” the King then struck the Master sword with his hand and a green light emitted from it. No sooner did the color from the castle begin to drain. “Now my faithful men, you have been good and faithful servants. You must all leave now, and warn those that will listen to take refuge on the mountaintops. “
“But my Lord, what about you?” they questioned.
“Do not worry about me, I must stay here and wait, for it is not my time to act, but the gods have a plan for me. Now go! Time is short. May we see each other again in the Realm of the Gods…No fly!” As a single entity, they all bowed and began walking cautiously outside, only to find the castle and only it’s surrounding area frozen in time.
King Daphnes Nohansen Hyrule now spoke to the gods, “Let it be thy will o’ Heavenly ones. Let it be thy will to seal the darkness in Hyrule away from this world. Let not your power every fall into the hands of darkness, my blood line shall protect it as long as until the end of time. Let it be thy will to seal Hyrule away!” His voice rang within the halls of the castle…
The sun was high, sea gulls turning about in lazy circles, the great blue glittering with the reflection of the golden sun, and clouds drifting in the distance. A small girl rested underneath a large palm tree, holding a strange and mysterious golden triangle that her family had passed down to her. She couldn’t remember who had it originally. Turning it about in her hand, she tried to understand what it was and it’s secrets it contained. All she knew is that her mother had told her to guard it with her life since her ancestors, like the beautiful stone as well.
“C’mon, Elder Ralvor is about to tell the story again! You know he only tells it on special occasions.”
“Alright gonzo, I’m coming.” she got up and brushed the sand off her yellow dress. There was a cool breeze relieving the tropical heat. They rushed off almost bumping into everyone walking on the path through the village. They reached the Elder’s house, cramming into there and forcing the other children and villagers to let them in. Everyone was silent but the large crackle of the fire inside.
The Elder cleared his voice. The girl slipped into the back and pulled out the Golden Triangle. It always seemed like she had to examine it when the Elder would tell this particular story.
The Elder opened his voice, “This is but one of the Legends the people speak of…”
