I really fancy getting into some sort of monthly esbat ritual practice. To give my path a little structure and discipline but, for the life of me, I cannot fathom what sort of ritual to do.
I just don't even know where to begin. How do you observe the esbats (if you do at all)? And what sort of practices do you incorporate?

Actually I have the same problem you're having. It's something I want to do, but when it comes to hashing together some sort of ritual I'm stymied. I'm unsure where to begin. I've asked around a few times but not found any real ideas that inspired. So I'll be watching this thread too ninja

I use the esbats for lots of things. Right now I am working with a group of women and we explore a different Goddess every month. since we are an eclectic group we honor different Goddesses and try to understand what they have to teach us. Its an interesting group and the Goddesses from different traditions so far have been very generous in giving to those who are just asking and not necessarily following.
I see the Sabbats as more celebratory and the esbats more as working rituals. I look hard and long at myself, I try to have a set of standards to live by that makes sense to me, make me a better person, but yet a strong person. I work on these at esbats. I often look at the things I need in my life and work for these at esbats. At new moon I look at the things I need to let go of, at full moon I try to work any magick I need to achieve my personal goals.
There are spells that I feel need done, in my life, my neighborhood, my country, the Earth, I do these at esbats.
I hit the post button before I was done, maybe its a sign I said too much! icon_lol.gif
I observe my private esbats by meditating on what needs to be done and making a decision beforehand sometimes even a week earlier. I cast circle, do a meditation for the purpose of my esbat, do what ever magick I had intended ( which sometimes is as simple as asking for answers or guidance), then I spend a little bit of time thinking about what I did on the last esbat and was it a worthwhile cause, Am I finished with it, is there something more important I should be doing, how well did the spell work, is there something else i should be doing? (yeah ok sometimes I over-think things But I believe in looking honestly at things I have done, especially magickally.) Its not unusual that I do a cone of power to protect what I have done or to add power to my spell work. I do a bit of cakes and ale to help ground, then I deconstruct circle do libations and am on my merry way.
Does that answer you question???? If not just ask me in another way. Once you just begin to do them they make more sense.
I hope this helped
Loona edit: I combined the two posts into one posts

"THE ALL IS MIND; The Universe is Mental."--The Kybalion. I think that really when you perform an esbat unless the moons have specific meaning and you are honoring that meaning, you can basically do any type of ritual you want. I think the idea of choosing different Gods to honor at each esbat is a good idea. By the power of the mind much is possible

Well you guys have certainly given me some food for thought so thank you smile I think at this point in my spiritual path I need to focus on building relationships with my Deity so I could perhaps do that during esbats?
As far as my practice goes I tend not to use Circles unless they're longer-lasting. Like, I've got one on my window sill at the moment that I'm using to focus solar energy into a jar of honey that I'll offer to my Deity. But I rarely put one around myself...odd that hehe smile .
Great ideas smile Thanks again xxx Aria

"THE ALL IS MIND; The Universe is Mental."--The Kybalion. Getting to know your deity through rituals on esbats seem like a good idea. The first thing I would do is learn what you can about the rituals of the culture of that deity for the future. For now lighting a candle, meditating, offering and praying can be fine. By the power of the mind much is possible

It may help if people explained what they believe the term Esbat to mean.
The commentary on what it is and is not in modern witchcraft greatly when addressing the works of the Farrars, Doreen Valiente, Margaret Murray or Charles Leland.

doistu Esbat = period of the full moon Okay, it may be worth noting that Full Moon Esbats are distinguished from other Esbats in Doreen Valiente's writings. If you're looking for a full moon ritual, you may want a combination of worship, meditation and perhaps magic. What does the moon mean to you? zyzzva, I'm sorry. I accidentally dropped the word differs from that post.

doistu Esbat = period of the full moon "THE ALL IS MIND; The Universe is Mental."--The Kybalion. I'd change that to say that an esbat is a dull ceremonial meting of working both magic and of worshiping. Can and is most commonly held on full moons but they can be held any time. By the power of the mind much is possible

Would anyone find the astrological commentary on the influence of the moon and houses useful?

First we need to understand what a full moon is. A full moon occurs when the sun and moon are opposed- 180 degrees opposite one another.
Opposition isn't as troubling as square can be, but the energy itself is dynamic- it can be challenging or even confrontational.
The Sun is about that which is Special about ourselves. The Moon is about those things we draw to us in order to nurture ourselves.
So in essence, the full moon is a heightening of the relationship between what makes something special and what nurtures it.
This also means that these two celestial bodies will be in opposing signs, but using most house systems, they may not be in opposite houses.
The house location can change with the latitude and time and you would need to draw a chart to see where it is.
I am going to use June's full moon as the example:
Where I live, the full moon will take place with the moon in the first house in Capricorn and the sun will be in the 7th house in Cancer.
Please understand I am going to make this very simple. There is a lot more in the chart I usually take into account.
The first house is the house of action and Capricorn is a sign of unity. The seventh house is the house of perfection and Cancer (which rules the moon) is the sign of nurturing.
With that in mind, it would suggest that this is a time to actively explore how community nurtures us in special ways. This is going to be amplified by how we can improve ourselves by nourishing that which is special about us.
With this in mind, I would develop a ritual that honored how we as individuals can craft and improve upon that which makes us unique and how those things which make us special can contribute to our greater collective.
I emphasize that this is based upon where I live- and that it may differ based on where someone else lives.
To amend: When I described Capricorn as a sign of unity, I realized I worded it poorly. Capricorn is about societal unity and social obligations.
