So last year during March I played FFXI. I wanted to see what it was like, and I loved everything about it except for the lack of a large community (I quit WoW to play it). It took the entire month to get used to Macros and new system, but I still liked it lots and only quit because most of my WoW friends have my Facebook and they coaxed me back. I don't plan to keep playing it once XIV comes out, but it's just a way to kill some time and have fun for me.

Would anyone mind giving me some pointers, because I honestly can't recall almost anything from when I played for that short time. If some one knew a nice site that explained Macros, that would be awesome :3 So far my lil Taru is a lvl 12 RDM, and I just wanna get him to be a Summoner and I'll be happy lol.

What system are you playing on?
Macros are pretty straight forward on how to use them unless you are confused on how you set them up.

In which case its as follows

weapon skills - /ws "Insert weapon skill name"
You can also do something along the lines of this.

/p [weapon skill] in 2 seconds!
/wait 2
/ws "Insert weapon skill name here"

magic - /ma "Fire"
Something along those lines for magic.

Job abilities - /ja "Chain Spell"

use for targets for yourself or to select your own target.

Yes the quotes must be there for all abilities, weapon skills and magic and the words must be copied exactly, capitals in correct locations etc.

Here is a full guide to FFXI macros and how they work.
http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Macro

What I listed was just a small list I hoped would get you started.

What server you on because FFXI is far from dead. Its got more players now than ever.

The lower level areas are a bit though sadly but the level sync system has improved this a bit so anyone of any level can party with you. It is best to inform them that you will be using level sync with them however.

Some info you may want to know before becoming a summoner.

I see the appeal in this I really do as its part of the reason I became a summoner. Use powerful avatars to fight for you and cast powerful spells at the same time. However when I was playing summoners were used mainly as back up healers more than they did for actual damage with their avatars. This may have changed as I haven't played in almost 2 years now. Occasionally I got a party that wanted the damage/skills of my avatars which was great as they were very fun parties to be in. That's just a heads up.

Also again it is very difficult to get avatars. I got shiva and garuda and that was it. All others I tried (mainly Titan and Ifrit) kicked my a**. Shiva was very easy though that was a fluke I think and Garuda took me 2 tries. They can be very expensive to get the supplies you need and there is a bit of strategy involved to beating them in a fight to obtain them. So be forewarned that it is somewhat difficult but when you get that avatar it just feels great and is awesome to use. And while finding the jewel for the summoner quest isnt hard it just is a rare drop so be sure to bring a Thief friend with you to help you find it. So this isn't to push you away from becoming a Summoner just a warning.

Also some pointers for summoner, from my experience as a summoner many people will want your subjob to be white mage. So when you get your subjob I suggest leveling white mage instead of something else (Though black mage is tons of fun ha ha) That way when you get to summoner you will be prepared. Plus it helps for the avatar fights.

I hope this helps you.

I was thinking once I hit 18 to just go WHM til 30... but I've decided to just go another route. If I can't use my avatars, it'd just be depressing >.<

I do like healing though, almost as much as being a DD. I figure the biggest Pro is it's easier to get a group as a Healer or Support? I could be wrong with FFXI. So I'm currently looking at Dancer, Bard, Puppet Master, Blue Mage, Dragoon and the good old BLM. Oh decisions. Thanks for the Macro guide though ^^

Also I looked for what server I'm on >.> and I honestly don't know where my lil Taru is from. I'll check again though.

Also does Race actually matter significantly to the class you're playing? I saw a couple people making it look like a big enough deal for my Taru to stay clear of Melee classes.

Play what you like racially.

I've seen Tarutaru Paladin Tanks.
And Galka White Mages.
You can make it work and that is what is so great about FFXI.

Sure being a certain race for a certain job will give you significant bonuses, however if you are a Galka WHM and that party needs a WHM you will get picked. But if they see a Tarutaru WHM in need of a party as well chances are he will get chosen first. The Taru WHM's MP will be quite a bit higher than the Galka's however the Galka will have much higher HP. So the perk to being a Galka WHM I suppose is the fact that if they do get aggro they will be able to take more hits till the tank saves him.

Thats just the way things go. So really it does have an impact but I wouldn't let it bother you to much.

If you have a linkshell or some higher level friends I'd ask them what a summoners role in a party typically is and if they ever get a chance to use their avatars if that is whats stopping you from choosing that class.

Lucky for me I play a Hume so I am pretty well balanced no matter which job I choose but I just happen to prefer Humes over that of other races. (If they ever added male Mithra though I would change in a heartbeat. Curse my latent need to play my gender in any given MMO.)

Also DNC, BRD, BLU, and BLM are all very very easy to get a party with.

Back when PUP first came out they weren't chosen much but I hear that recently they have had a rise in popularity and are easier to get a Party with. Smart party leaders will usually pick a DRG as well since they are quite the Damage dealer when played correctly.

Also to figure out which server you are on, simply log in on your character and look at the chat window. It should say something along the lines of "Welcome to -Insert Server name here.-"

BTW I forgot to mention the Scholar class intrigues me also. I'll assume that they mostly heal, and that their Black Magic is mostly just for solo purposes? BTW, thanks tons for the help again ^^ I'm on Asura too.
PostPosted: Fri May 28, 2010 12:48 am

Scholar. That is pretty much the only class I know almost nothing about. Can't help you on that one crying .

I doubt its black magic is for soloing however. The only classes that really solo are BST, occasionally SMN or DRG as well but not nearly as often.

I would play with you when I restart playing if you were on my server, I'm on Cerberus but its ok. I'm not ever sure when Ill rejoin.

Help is no problem. I always took time away from what I was doing to help someone that needed it in FFXI so why should the forums be any different razz .

Scholars are very good as healers once they pass level 30 indeed. I haven't played too much with scholars, but my friend who plays it says it's mostly healing and buffing. Especially since you can turn any buff -ga (Something that pissed off summoners a bit at first)

I thought about deleting my character and restarting on another server... But a year ago when I originally played some nice dude, it looks like he's quit by now, gave me like 20g. I feel rich and don't want to lose it XD lol

Well that is a lot for your level I suppose lol.

I've played for 5 years and never had more than 200k on me at a given time. It was terrible when the economy was complete s**t thanks to RMTs crying . Thankfully Square has fixed that to an extent though there are still some items selling for a few million gil.

Nah. I was just impatient and bad at Farming (though I did improve).

A few of my LS members considered 1 million gil poor others considered it an average amount and then a few of us, like me considered it loaded. Ha ha

Chances are you will burn through that 20k pretty quickly when its time for new spells and equipment.

I think part of my problem was after I played with a few jobs I decided to not sell any of my old equipment to get money for new stuff. This was partially because I found myself rebuying it again for new jobs and sometimes it would be more expensive than before, though sometimes it was cheaper still I found it easier just to save it ha ha. Especially when Leather Armor is like 2-3k a piece.

Money was the main reason I avoided the Ranger and Ninja jobs. They are very expensive. Though I did scrape by on my Ninja using only Utsusemi-ichi tools (I forget the name of them) just so I could use it as a subjob for my thief.

Well then that's not too bad I suppose. I've never been much of a crazy farmer myself. I always figured if I had time to farm, I had time to lvl a different character XD

BTW >.> Is it strange to see male Dancers? I do wanna check it out and play one, but thanks to FFTactics whenever I think of one I think "Girls Only" >.< lol.

EDIT: Goodness, I just did some research on that question, and it appears not too often. Apparently the AF Armor is not Male friendly? Of course I will probably never get a chance to raise any class past 40ish before FFXIV comes out so it probably won't matter... I'll prolly just got Bard ^^.

Male and Female Dancer Artifact armor. Not a fan of it on either personally. I see male dancers just as often as I see female ones however.

Bard's have some awesome looking AF in my opinion.

Sometimes you have to take time away from leveling another job to make money for one you have now if you want to keep leveling it ha ha.

Heya, I've hopefully just got 2 questions left. First, I'm in a LS that I was invited to by a player who helped me out a lot, just as you have Alade, but he doesn't appear to play anymore and the once active and large LS seems empty and dead-ish. So I want to find a new one, but how does one go about doing so? Also if I do make a new toon, I'll need to know how to find one period lol.

Also, at lvl 12 I've noticed some guides saying I'll start seeing and doing group quests. How do I go about finding groups for them? Right now I'm in Windburst, would I be better off traveling elsewhere?

Around level 12 you will spend most of your time leveling in Valkurm dunes. If you can find someone to escort you to the ferry in Mhaura. This is a bit of a dangerous trek alone but it is possible if you are careful. Once in Mhaura take the ferry selbina. If you go above deck make sure you let others go first. Occasionally there will be a Sea Horror aboard. Also don't try to fight anything. The only thing that aggros is the Sea Horror. If you hear the music change be sure to go above or below deck as well as Pirates are attacking.

Anyway after you arrive in Selbina set your home point there. You won't be returning to Windy for some time now. Most of what you need can be gotten from Bastok or San d'Oria so just travel to either of those two nations if you need to return to town for some reason or another. They are much closer than Windy.

The only group quests I can think they would be referring to around that level would be the subjob quest which is also located in Selbina but can't be started until you are level 18. You can however collect the items for it.

Those being a Damselfly worm, a Crab Apron, and a Wight Skull. Just inform your party you need one of these items should the drop and they should let you roll for it.

I've had similar LS problems. I found the best way to get a Linkshell is simply change you Bazaar message to something along the lines of "Looking for a new Linkshell."
Or "In need of a linkshell with active members." or "New Player looking for helpful linkshell"

People tend to examine other people in the game quite often especially when in a party with them so someone is bound to see it. You will get an invite sooner or later. An alternative is to shout in town asking for a linkshell but I'm not sure how effective this would be. Some people may be turned away by it.

Also it may be best to leave your current LS unequipped when searching for a new LS lest you confuse others and they may not ask you thinking you already got one.

To get in group quests the others i can think still really think of any before 20 yet so if you have any examples please tell me it may refresh my memory.
