Thursday, August 12. 8:30 p.m.
Toby walked through the hallways of the building on his way to apartment number seventeen. Each time he passed a door, he secretly hoped that someone had filled the empty space beyond.
Maybe today, he thought, a cute girl would poke her head out of number three. She would be on her way to her car, having forgotten one of her manga books in it. They could talk for a while, and come to the conclusion that he should step inside for tea and video games. He passed number three with no such occurance.
Maybe an old man would recount his adventures of Peru outside number eight. Toby would tell the gentleman how swell a day it was, and that they should take a trip to the islands of South Asia. The two would set off in a hot air balloon and come back in time for a dinner of well-made macaroni. Number eight was left behind with no excitement to speak of.
Toby kept his head down and his thoughts to a minimum as he walked to his door. With the turn of the doorknob, he stepped inside. With a flick of his wrist, he tossed his tie onto a nearby chair. With no enthusiasm whatsoever, he dropped onto his sofa.
Maybe tomorrow would be better.

Friday, August 13. 6:24 a.m.
Toby stared at the ceiling. He swung at his alarm clock, missed, was rolled out of bed by the momentum, and resumed to stare at the ceiling from a different location.
Regardless of whether he wanted to get up or not, he did anyway. He picked out his socks. One was striped green, blue, and purple. The other was a checkerboard pattern of neon blues and greens. Happy with his one important feature of outward self expression, he stepped into his pants and covered said feature with his shoes.
He grabbed his briefcase, straightened his tie, and stepped out the door, just like he had every day for the past year.

Toby stopped for a moment to gather his thoughts. They didn't really have far to run in such an empty hallway, so he caught them rather quickly. Doors didn't usually make noise if there's nobody to use them.
He checked his own door, and he was pretty sure it hadn't shut yet. Just to be sure, he shut it. Comparing the noise he had heard with that of his own door, he assured himself that there was indeed someone else.
He then realised that he would probably look like an idiot to anyone watching. He finally decided to look around the hallway to see if anyone was there.

There's light coming from beneath one of the doors. There's also movement behind it, suggesting at unpacking boxes...

Toby stood at the door. Not his door, of course, but the door with the lights and noises. Not wanting to seem rude, he prepared to knock politely. Step one, curl hand. Check. Step two, tap lightly three times. Check. Step three, be ready for anything. Close enough.

A teen about age seventeen opens up the door. He has neatly side-parted brown hair, a square jaw with proud chin and dimple, rectangular glasses, and blue eyes. He raises an eyebrow, which is... oddly talented. Like a cartoon or something in its curve. Like a clown. He's wearing a black t-shirt with jeans that are torn in the knees and he wears black leather biker boots. "Somebody else lives in this apartment building?"

The teen had taken the words right out of Toby's mouth. "You took the words right out of my mouth." Toby stated, fairly sure that the addressed teen wouldn't know this without him saying it. He was slightly distracted by the eyebrow thing though...
Toby quickly compared the teen to himself. Toby was probably a few years older at age nineteen. Their hair was a similar color, but Toby's was slightly more blonde, and a bit messier. Toby also looked far too dressed up by comparison, wearing a white button-up and a black tie.
Also, Toby's denim jeans were a few shades darker, just in case anyone may care to know.

"Hm. Well. That's interesting... Name's Jack. Jack Utsler Jeckel. And you are?" He extends his hand in a friendly handshake. His hands are worn from a lot of heavy lifting and such, but hasn't seemed to have broken much of a sweat.

Toby took the hand and shook it, as was expected of him. "I'm Toby. Toby Kerrick." He smiled, hoping to give a good impression. "I was just curious, so I thought I might say hello."

"Yes it is." Toby said. "This place was starting to get really spooky." He shifted his weight to his other foot, as people tend to do from time to time.

"Yeah, that's why I chose to live here. I can use a lot of these rooms for my own purposes." He smiles warmly and pops his neck.

"Not anything like hiding dead bodies, I hope." Toby said. "I've already used room twelve for that. By the way, I live in number seventeen, just down the hall."

He laughs. He has an odd laugh, very comparable to the Joker's laugh from the old Batman cartoons. "Well I'm glad to see I have something in common with my neighbor!" He lives in room 13.
