I believe you have already heard of it at least a little... And I'm wondering what you think of it and if it has any credibility.
It has to do with events that are observable also outside of the spiritual: solar activity, radiation from space, increasing of the Schumann's frequency more than ever before. But supposedly also with phenomena like energies and vibrations.
Some people believe that the world is entering a new spiritual phase and the transformation will be finished by 2012. By and possibly also after that time a lot of people will die [naturally or from various disasters] and only the most spiritually advanced ones will stay and found new societies, no more based on materialism, control and oppression.
Are you interested in this? What do you think? Is something happenning? Or just wishful thinking of dreamers who are sick of how humanity is going to hell and want to have some [unrealistic?] hope?

I put no credence in it at all. The whole thing was dreamed up by Sylvia Browne and co. to make money.

This world, according to the Mayans, was created when the last one was destroyed. That happened when their calendar reached 13.0.0.00.00.0 or whatever. That's going to happen in 2012, although they had no big reason to assume the same would happen over again, and at any rate if we think it did we'd have to think that this world was only around 8000 years old or however long it was. Archaeologists say it's absolute rot and I have no reason to disbelieve them.

Humanity is not going to hell. We're no different than we have been in the past, and actually reasonably few countries have capital punishment (when are you going to join the rest of us, America?). We're trying (and failing, but still trying) to preserve different species, we strive towards fairness and equality, torture is frowned upon. What's so bad about humanity now that wasn't also awful in the past? I don't get it.

This is a bit of a hard ask, getting a person to swallow that, seeing as they only really worked out how to measure it about 50 years ago.

Not wishful dreamers. Wishful dreamers buy into it, certainly, but it was created by shady new-agers specifically to make money off've wishful dreamers, which they do a great deal. I'm not sure what wishful dreamers have to hope for, though - why assume they're going to come off better and others will die horribly?

Yeah lately I have been reading various websites about this but I'm not sure what to think of it. :/
Also it seems that New agers have been already expecting a dramatic spiritual change since the 80's or so? But still nothing and thus their new selected date is 2012.

I think humanity is getting worse in the sense of losing respect for values higher than materialism. Religious values, but also values of honesty, respect and consideration among people, some higher ideals. Science is advancing but I'm afraid in the hands of egoistic materialists it can bring more bad than good [the danger of these advancing is that anyone who has power/money can get psycho and misuse it horribly]. There's less politeness and consideration and more egoism, which can also be a part of the lack of spirituality: "If there's nothing more than this material world and life, I can just try to get as much as possible from it regardless of others." This mentality is not only in individuals but we can also see it in this insane system of globalization and the corporations ruling it. It seems that the advancing of civilization is making us lose touch with nature and with our soul too. But true that every period had its bad times too and in some aspects there were more horrible than now. Still this system cannot continue long like this and we hear that from "not spiritual" people and professions too... we can't keep draining the earth's natural resources ad infinitum.

@Ametrin

After your exams, I'd take a look at Juvenille's Sixteen Satires. The things he criticizes are almost identical to that which is criticized today.
