Anyone looking forward to the World Cup (or am I the only one that cares)? Go USA!!!
PostPosted: Sat Jun 05, 2010 4:15 pm

In the last friendly before the start of the 2010 World Cup, US defeats Australia 3-1.

Two goals came from Edson Buddle (his first two goals in international play), the first of which came in the 4' minute! A costly mistake by one of Australia's defenders saw Buddle strip and make an unchallenged run at the goal, putting the ball just over the keeper's shoulder and into the back of the net.

After Australia answered with a goal of their own off of a corner, Buddle struck again in the 31' minute on a cross from Cherundolo.

In injury time of the 90+' minute, late substitute Herculez Gomez put one in the back of the net off a cross from Landon Donovan, ensuring a US victory.

The US team looked decent in the first half, but part of the victory was due to Australia not being able to score on golden opportunities. I don't see many problems for the US in group play (England, sans Ferninand and Beckham, being the only real challenge in the group) but they'll have to step up their game if they want to make a real run at winning the World Cup...teams like Brazil, Spain and Italy won't miss those opportunities.

Opening Match 2010 World Cup

South Africa-1
Mexico-1

South Africa should consider this game a win. They were the heavy underdogs, expected to lose. They also showed several moments where they could have sealed the game. Hopefully now that they are past their first game, their nerves will settle for when they take on France.

I hate Mexico with a passion (just their soccer team...not the people), so the fact that they didn't win makes me happy. However, they're going to get out of group play. But they couldn't stop tradition yet (no host team has lost their opening game).

France-0
Uruguay-0

Group A Standings so far:

1st- Mexico (1 point, 0 goals)
- South Africa (1 point, 0 goals)
- France (1 point, 0 goals)
- Uruguay (1 point, 0 goals)

*For those that don't know:
-A win is 3 points.
-A tie is 1 point.
-A loss is 0 points.
-In the event of a tie in points, the goal differential (number of goals scored minus number of goals allowed) will be the deciding factor.

South Korea-2
Greece-0

First win/loss of the World Cup. South Korea dominated this game.

Argentina-1
Nigeria-0

If Messi is supposed to be the best player in the world, he certainly did not make a case for it today.

Group B standings thus far:

1- South Korea (3 points, 2 goals)
2- Argentina (3 points, 1 goal)
3- Nigeria (0 points, -1 goal)
4- Greece (0 points, -2 goals)

USA-1
England-1

Granted, the US got "lucky" but hey, there are no style points in the World Cup. It'll go down as a tie in the record books and that's all that matters.

Slovenia- 1
Algeria- 0

Algeria's Ghezzal gets two stupid yellow cards, resulting in his team coming out of this game with no points. An ugly goal off the mistake of Algeria, but a win's a win.

Group C standings thus far:

1- Slovenia (3 points, 1 goal)
2- England (1 point, 0 goal)
- USA (1 point, 0 goal)
4- Algeria (0 points, -1 goal)

In a group where England and US are expected to dominate...neither of them are leading the group. Granted, that will change with the next round of group play as it becomes a competition between England and the US in terms of who can score the most goals.

Ghana- 1
Serbia- 0

An exciting game even if it would have ended at 0-0. But the senseless handball in the box by Serbia gives Ghana the easy PK, giving them a well-deserved win.

Germany- 4
Australia- 0

Germany looked very strong (obviously judging from the score...but even on their play throughout the game). I see them going far in the tournament. Maybe not winning it, but definitely quarterfinals.

Group D standings thus far:

1- Germany (3 points, 4 goals)
2- Ghana (3 points, 1 goals)
3- Serbia (0 points, -1 goals)
4- Australia (0 points, -4 goals)

Netherlands- 2
Denmark- 0

Netherlands looked strong on possession, but not so much on finishing (which is deceptive by the score, but one of those is an own goal on the part of Denmark. Considering how many chances they had, the Dutch should have scored more on their own).

Japan- 1
Cameroon- 0

Biggest upset so far in this World Cup. Japan played a great game against a stronger team.

Group E standings thus far:

1- Netherlands (3 points, 2 goals)
2- Japan (3 points, 1 goal)
3- Cameroon (0 points, -1 goals)
4- Denmark (0 points, -2 goals)

Italy-1
Uruguay- 1

Almost an upset, but Uruguay couldn't keep up with Italy. Still, bravo for holding off the surge of the defending champs.

New Zealand-1
Slovakia-1

Group F Standings thus far:

1-Italy (1 point, 0 goals)
-Uruguay (1 point, 0 goals)
-New Zealand (1 point, 0 goals)
