Quaashie liked these lands.

It was nice to see that the place never seemed to get boring, no matter how many times he came back for a visit. He already knew there were nice lions about, animals who were happy to show him around and make him feel like he could really make the place his home.

Hopefully he would be allowed to live there. It was a little intimidating a thought, actually, but one he wasn’t completely opposed to. He’d given it more than enough thought, after all: making sure settling down in one area was really what he wanted to do. Why not? Wasn’t like roaming the rogue lands was any different from living in a pride. It was all the same dirt. All the same trees.

And this place had wicked cool structures to explore. That was a plus.

Sitting himself down on a long, flat rock, the puffy, large male surveyed the area. He needed to find someone to talk to about joining. Someone to ask some questions to and make himself feel more assured about his choice.

No one was around- time for a nap.

Sighing after his very short, somewhat half-hearted scan of the area, the male plopped down onto the rock, smiling contently as he looked at the area around him. Such a nice place. Nice enough for a nap, wasn’t it? If someone had a problem with it, they could just wake him up.

Or, you know, attack him in his sleep.

Either way, he didn’t seem too worried, rolling onto his back to get more comfortable, his head dangling off the edge of the rock.

The lounging male had been spotted by a passing member. Her name was Anya and she was new here, too. She was grateful for the kindness of these lions and for the ones who had made her feel so at home here despite the fact that they had barely known her.

She supposed, really, that they would see no reason to worry about a traumatised, mute, scarred female from the rogue lands. What trouble could she possibly wreak here? None, of course. And she didn't plan to. Anya was a good girl. It was just a shame that her kind heart and motherly nature had led her to such pains in her life.

She hadn't deserved it.

But now she was frozen in panicked fear. There was a male just there. A strange male and...he was between her and the oasis. What was she going to do? What if it was...was him? A relative of his? Someone he had sent to hunt her down when he'd discovered she hadn't been killed by that fall!? Her chest heaved with each panicked breath only made worse by the jackal who was pacing impatiently in front of her.

"Come on. What're you doing? I thought we were getting you to the oasis for a drink? You are thirsty, aren't you?" He wasn't the most willing of helpers, that was to be sure. But...he'd been given the task to care for her and he was dedicated even if he was a little anti-social.

He stopped pacing and gave a short bark that seemed to freak her out completely. "Come on already!" He cried. He seemingly hadn't noticed the male lion, else understanding would have dawned on him.

Never mind. It soon would.

Quasshie grunted, raising his head when he heard the commotion. Opening his eyes, he looked around the area, figuring someone was about ready to get on his case about being there when he shouldn’t be or some other such nonsense he had never had to deal with before that moment. It felt like he wasn’t doing anything wrong, unless napping had become against the rules all of a sudden, so why was he being yelled at?

Soon he discovered that he wasn’t being yelled at all. In fact, he wasn’t a part of the equation at all, it seemed. Not from what he could see, anyway. Fairly close by, Quaashie could see a female lion getting chewed out by some kind of jackal. While normally he would find such a strange sight highly amusing, the look of fright on the female’s face sent him quickly into ‘see what’s up and defend if needed’ mode.

He had no idea, of course, that she wasn’t frightened because of the little dog. It was his presence he should have been concerned about.

Moving from his sleeping spot, the male made his way over to the duo, coming to a stop not too far away. Standing there, he let his tail swish around behind him, his expression a mix between concern and irritation.

“You should be a bit more thoughtful,” he told them, “some of us are trying to sleep and you’re shouting! What’s the trouble here, anyway? If there’s a problem, maybe I can lend a paw?”

Then get back to sleep.

She was frantically trying to tell him to be quiet, her mouth opening and closing soundlessly, her paws making frantic little steps on the sand. But it was too late. His bark had drawn attention and the male had stirred...

He was moving towards them. Closer. Closer!

She felt the fear grip her, felt it swell in her heart, felt it dizzy her head. The world seemed to sway, everything around her becoming somewhat distant and fuzzy. She was...she was going to faint!

Anya staggered sideways, listing slightly as the male finally reached them, speaking for the first time. She didn't faint, but she might as well have done. She immediately dropped to the ground, flattening herself against the sand as if she hoped it would swallow her and hide her from this strange, dark--pelted male.

The jackal, finally realising that she wasn't just freaking out for any reason, turned just as the male arrived on the scene, his fur bristling at the stranger's words.

"You're the problem!" The jackal huffed, his usual anti-social, quick-tempered personality not helping matters at all. "She's afraid and you being here isn't helping." He exhaled noisily and moved to provide a sort of barricade between the two lions.

"Who're you anyway? I don't recognise you."

“What? Afraid?” Quaashie suddenly felt a bit of guilt shooting through him- she was afraid of him? But… he had only been sleeping! Why was she afraid of him? Watching her, he frowned. Her actions seemed terrified indeed, which was making him a bit worried that he really was the cause. Still, why was this jackal the one to tell him all of that? She could have told him that his presence upset her- wasn’t like he was a mind reader.

It was all a little confusing.

“My name is Quaashie,” he said quickly, nodding a respectful greeting to the smaller creature. If the lioness was too busy trying to hide in the ground, or become one with it, to speak with him, then he would explain himself to the other animal. “I’m a bit new here, myself. Just getting used to the lay of the land and all that. What about you? I haven’t seen you two around here before, either.” He smiled softly, wondering if they were going to trust him or not. It seemed silly that they might not get along because or something he wasn’t even sure he had actually done. Scaring someone just by getting woken up by them!

What a strange world the place was becoming- he couldn’t imagine what next was going to prove too much for someone. A sneeze? A suspicious blink?

Watching the female, he frown deepened still. “Is she alright? She hasn’t said a thing to me… I don’t want to scare her, really. I’m a nice guy! Just a bit grumpy when I first wake up, that’s all…”
