There's a Gamestop on base, where I live and I thought about working there for the summer. First, the manager said they aren't hiring, but accepting applications. (What does that mean?) And I looked over the application and it asks me about the knowledge I have for game systems and PC systems.
I don't know much about the said topics. I mean, I still play the PS2 and the newest game system I own is the Wii. And I play very few games in general.
I would love to learn more on the job, but will the lack of knowledge push me further back on the hiring list? Lol.
I needs to save money so I can visit my family before we move to Germany this winter. gonk

My girlfriend worked at gamestop for a while. They gave her a few hours for the Halo 3 release, and then they just stopped giving hours.
Not hiring, but accepting applications is the current politically correct way of saying, "No." I use it all the time at my work when people come in asking if we are hiring.
Not having an extensive knowledge database for current gaming systems will in all likelihood put you further back on the list than someone who does. This is partly due to the fact that customers ask a lot of questions before making purchases, and if the person they ask has no clue what the customer is asking about, it looks bad for the company.
That being said, there ARE ways of improving the aforementioned knowledge database without spending oodles of money. You could lurk on video game message boards. Gamefaqs is a great one for that, you can click on a console, and the current top 10 games for that console will be displayed, and you can read forum posts for days about it, or even reviews. Or, if you have a really high-end PC, there is always the possibility of "[large flightless bird]lation."

Ah, thank you for your response. I've heard they aren't the greatest company to work for anymore. As you said, the hours are just terrible and they have high expectations. I did a little research and read many negative opinions and a couple of positive ones that I found on the net.
As for learning about games and all, you recommended just what my hubby did. ^_^ Read the magazines and check the forums. Hehe. I completely understand why they wouldn't want someone who didn't know much.
I am also glad that you interpreted the "Always accepting applications". I won't waste my time with them.
I sound so snobby! I don't mean to. T^T Thanks again! I'll look around elsewhere on base. x3
