Thoughts?

I love the series...especially the initial playthrough considering everything's so secretive regarding the details of upcoming titles (which I think is awesome).

Personally, I like the non-mainstream games better. They're not as spastic as the main two games, which mostly consist of side quests. The other games also have a much darker storyline (especially 358/2 days).

I've only played 1 and 2 but I like them. 2 had a lot of stuff that was overly dramatic and Ansem seemed too childish to be as old as he was after reading all his reports. I also hate how Roxas basically gets the shaft after they put so much time into him in the game. Gummi ship building is always fun, we need more of that in RPGs.

I hated the gummi ships...I warped everywhere as soon as I could. Check out the other two games...they're darker (or at least, not as childish) as the main two.

So, I just finished Birth by Sleep, and this may replace 358/2 days as my favorite non-main game...it's hard to say. All the stuff off the main story has been pretty awesome thus far, and BBS is no exception. The game answers questions you didn't even know you had...Seriously, it's like Nomura planned all this stuff out before the first game even launched...and they set up the events for the third game in the secret movie at the end. I'm so pumped...

Anyway, they tried some new things out in this game...and I think a lot of them worked. Got rid of the Gummy ships...instead, the three main characters transform their Keyblades into vehicles to move about between worlds (and no roads that you have to fly through either...just pick a spot, and land). While I guess Sora can't really take Donald and Goofy on a one seater, the Keyblade bikes make more sense than Gummy ships (plus, leave 'em...).

They introduce a skills level up system. You can only have so many skills equipped, and certain abilities get stronger when they level up. I think this could work for the main games...instead of finding the upgrades for spells and abilities, you level them up (like Fire changes to Fira at level 5 or something).

Four new attack systems as well...Love the finish command system. Didn't really work with the Shotlock, Command Style and D-Link systems, but I work better with a full controller...not quite used to some functions on the PSP.

All in all, the game did what it needed to (tide us over til they get to work on KH3), and offered a great main story that made wading through the Disney crap worth it. I may even go back and play all the games over again, just to see the little nuances in their actions now that I have a better idea of what's going.

My only complaint with this series is DID THEY HAVE TO PICK THE TWO SINGLE MOST ANNOYING CHARACTERS AS YOUR SIDEKICKS!?!?!

So true. Disregarding their personality (and how you have to have subtitles on for when they talk), Donald's always ********' dying, and Goofy's always using up his MP...a far cry from a crack squad bent on saving the world. That's one of the reasons why I like the side games: CoM-play as Sora and Riku, no one else in the party. 358/2- play as Organization XIII members. BBS- Rarely do you get a party, it's usually just the character you're playing at the time...however, there is one awesome party they just throw in there (Ventus, Hercules, Zack from FFVII) and the one boss battle where all three main characters are involved.

I'd usually sub Donald and Goofy out, but there isn't anyone I really like in the Disney universe that I want to replace them. I put Auron and Riku in in 2, and that's it.

Chip and Dale aren't even featured in the game.

They are...they just don't play a sizeable role. Usually just gummy ship stuff or mini-games.

Anywho, on-topic:

Kingdom Hearts is one of those games where you either like it and rave about it, or don't and generally brush it off. I'm in the brush it off category.

Sure, at first the game is interesting because "hey look; mickey and goofy and donald are running around with some kid!" But after that, it just gets...boring.

I agree that it's a "you like it or you don't" type thing, but the Disney aspect is not the attention getter. The main story is just brilliant. In fact, I hate pretty much all the Disney crap and love all the Square stuff. In fact, I think they should add more Square Enix guys into the mix, like something from Radiata Stories (I'd say Drakengard, but that just would not mesh with KH).
