Zumba is effective ... to a degree ...
In my personal belief this is just another phase in that "at home" fitness program ... before it was Tae Bo ... before that it was Richard Simmons ...
My main issue with Zumba is that it is only cardio base ... to truly lose weight you need to do some sort of weight bearing exercise ... primary weight bearing exercises with a focus on lean, functional muscle ...
But then again this is my personal belief ...
I would respectfully disagree here. You can lose a lot of weight with straight cardio. However, you will not replace that fat loss with anything of substance and cardio works on a diminishing returns basis as it will burn not only fat but muscle mass. Personally, for weight loss and muscle gain, I find squats to be the most effective exercise. In terms of "dance as exercise", I would prefer capoeira which adds the functionality of a martial art to the rigors of dance and can be just as fun.
