Kitsune are Japanese shape-shifting spirits usually in the form of foxes...they are also consider Japanese faeries. They use trickery and magic to decieve humans which they plan on making their slaves or in some rare cases their food. Kitsunes not only come in fox form, but also raccoon, farrett, and squirrel, and other small woodland creatures. There is a Japanese folktale called the Fox Wife...it tells of a human encounter with the Kitsune. Another famous Kitsune is the fox-demon Shippou from Inuyasha. Your job is to come up with anything dealing about Kitsunes.

Thanks and Have Fun,

Heres something you may or may not know. Kitsunes are so interwoven into the culture of japan, that they can be found as a main subject in many anime/manga. As was stated, shippo was one, but there are far more. The kitsune in Hell Teacher Nube is more of an anti-hero. The kitsune in Rosario + Vampire is a villain. Even in the world of Pokemon, kitsunes have their place. Vulpix, and its evolved form Ninetails, are clearly inspired by the folklore of the lengedary creature. In the anime/manga Love Hina, the character of Mitsune Kinoko is nicknamed Kitsune, because of the way her eyes make her look like the legendary fox.

According to folklore, when a fox has lived for 100 years, it grows a new tail. Thats why the more tails it has, the older it is, and the stronger it is. Nine [ Kyuu, or Ku ] are considered to be the most powerful, and are messengers for Buddha and Bodhistava [sp?]. Thats why they are revered as Gods, and why so many kitsune and fox statues are found near shrines. When they reach 1000 years old, they gain the ability to fully take on human form. Kitsunes are also extremely loyal to those that have been good to them, and treat them well. Such a tale was used in a story in the Pokemon anime, where a Ninetails that had been caught many centuries before thought Brock was its owner, since Brock and the owner resembled each other strongly.

The kitsune, or fox spirit, can be either benevolent or malevolent.

Benevolent kitsune are known as Zenko, are are most often associated with Inari, a japanese entity. The Zenko serve as messengers for Inari. They love rice and fried tofu, which are associated with the deity. Inari is also sometimes portrayed as a kitsune as well.

Malevolent kitsune are called Yako (although they are not always malicious. These foxes are also the kitsune most associated with mischief-making)

A kitsune can take on a human form when it reaches a certain age. It is estimated they can take human shape when they reach anywhere between 50 to 100 years. They are most known to take on the forms of elderly men, young women, or young girls, but can also take on the form of men (although this is not seen as much in japanese folklore). Kitsune may take on any of these shapes regardless of their own age or gender. They can also duplicate the form of another person. It is said that kitsune sometimes have trouble hiding their fox-like traits when in human form, namely their tail, and that a kitsune can sometimes be revealed by getting it drunk and looking for the tail.

Kitsune do not like dogs, and will run away when faced with one.

The Kitsune are known to have a wide range of abilities from posession, to their mouths and tails having elemental powers (mostly lightening and fire), to being able to make realistic illusions, flight, invisibility, being able to appear in dreams, and are even known to have vampiric abilities in some instances, where they drain the life force/energy of another, usually through sexual encounters.

I have a soft spot for kitsune in particular. If you were to ask me about some of the other creatures/beings of Japan, I doubt I could tell you as much. sweatdrop

I want to point out that Kitsunes are actually foxes. The word Kitsune in Japanese literally translates to....fox. -has a Japanese dictionary open in front of her-

Other shape shifting yokai would be like the Tanuki, hebi, mujina, bakeneko, ookami, inugami, tsuchigumo and jorogumo. Which in Japanese are racoons, snake, badger, cat, wolf, dogs and spiders (both words are used for spider yokai) respectfully.

The correct word for shapeshifters in Japanese would be henge. Kitsune is reserved for only fox spirits.

Kitsune are one of my favs. May I suggest an excellent book that is called "Kitsune Japan’s Fox of Mystery, Romance & Humor" by Kiyoshi Nozaki (The Hokuseido Press). It's likely the most in-depth and best researched book about everything contain fox lore. Only problem is, that book is very old & difficult to find sweatdrop

I guess I'll post a couple of things about what I remember:

-They can gain a tail every century or by preforming certain tasks which a fox can gain a tail faster. However, they can loose their tail if they dishonor Inari, a fellow kitsune or if their powers are greatly weakened.

-There are 13 types of kitsune that have 13 different elemental powers: earth, air, fire, river, ocean, sound, time, void, celestial, mountain, forest, thunder and spirit.

-The only "bad" kitsune are the air & spirit, which are typically more malevolent and prone to possessions.

-Enemies are the Dragon, dog, oni and religious items. Dragons & oni's can suck out the essence of the fox, killing it. While dogs are their natural enemy.

-The smallest kitsune is called a kanko (aka: kudagitsune). Kitsune-tsukai were monks that summoned these tiny foxes into a bamboo tube. They used them to perform tasks.

-Kitsune have varies powers such as: illusion, possession, ability to create realms, seduction, fox fire, elemental powers & shapeshifting. All kitsune carry with them what is called the kitsune ball. It appears as a normal, white ball, but it contains either a portion of their spirit or the source of their magical powers.

-Their leader is supposedly a 10 or 1,000 tailed fox called The Lady.

-Kitsune's favorite food is inari. Which is deep fried tofu, filled with sweat rice and covered in honey. In Japan, these are offered to Inari Shrines.

-Colours of the kitsune are: red (which only have 1 tail and either green or gold eyes), black (considered lucky and have brown eyes), white (have blue eyes), silver (has blue eyes) & gold (has blue eyes). Once a kitsune has 9 tails, it's said their fur will change either white or gold.

I'd say more, but my hands are tired...
On a personally note, in my manga I have lots of kitsune lore in it.
