March of the Red King
Castle Shrade. It is the center of the affiliated city states, where elected officials meet, the Council of Elders, to discuss, rule, and defend what is simply referred to as the 'kingdom'. The land is harsh, but the races of man have become strong, the land flourishing under the wise guidance of the council, and the forces, the monsters, of the wild kept at bay by the two branches of armed forces; the Royal Military, led by the king appointed by the Council of Elders, and the Guild, a loose affiliation of hunters, messengers, and laborers who can operate where the military cannot.
Outside the city states, towns, and villages, are monsters. Massive beasts of great size and power that have been around just as long as man has, and rule by power. These are the reason the Guild exists, to drive off and hunt the monsters that would threaten the lives of those who live in the kingdom. These beasts show the hostility of a world set against man, and often, more powerful, more devious monsters are discovered in the depths of the world, brought to light by the curiosity of man.
The red king. A man known only as legend, a fairy tale told by the guild of the greatest of the monster hunters who vanished years ago. Only those in the highest ranks of the Royal Military and the Council of Elders have any idea of who he was, and only shadows of any real information at that. Recently, disturbing things have surfaced, rogue hunters returning from the wild and attacking other hunters, soldiers, or even civilians, their minds gone and only able to speak short, garbled sentences... "The Red King... The Red Herald of doom... He comes..."
No one knows if the rogue hunters, called "Red Hands," are related to the rise in monster attacks, or the normally docile creatures of the wild becoming more aggressive. All that is known is that the era of man's power is being contested, and who will stand tall from the chaos is yet to be determined...
