to write. What would you have to have/get rid of, to keep you there?
Me: >Coffee Maker and cup (preferably with milk). >Laptop preferably though pen and paper would still work (but ignoring the internet access). >A bowl of popcorn/crisps/salted peanuts (snack). >A bowl of fruit (so I don't get hungry and wander off to the kitchen). >A fan (in case it gets too hot). >A clock or timer so I can set intervals in which I can make coffee but must work up until that point (otherwise I can spend forever procrastinating). >An empty house or someone that doesn't bother me whilst I work. >Plenty of space - I don't work well when I'm cramped up. >A comfortable chair/sofa/bed - if I start getting back ache/sore legs/wrist etc I'm not going to be in too much of a rush to get back to work.
edit: also forget to mention 'no phone' - as constant phone calls (even if I'm ignoring them) are very distracting.

For me to have a sustained effort doing anything, there are going to be extenuating circumstances. I am distractable (we use that as a euphemism for my not having or cultivating any discipline).
>Booze >Laptop >Crystal Light >Comfortable chair >Empty house or house of sleeping people >Carrot sticks and dip >Internet radio

That's a pretty reasonable list biggrin edit: does booze really help you? lol.
I've just added 'no phone' to my list as, just as I'd settled into a 15 minute writing session, my phone started going off. Even though I'd already decided to ignore calls/distractions within that time it was still very disruptive to the creative process by being startled back into reality.

'Help' is relative. It lowers my instinct to edit as I go, so I get more of my ideas on paper. And it means I can actually focus on one thing for a fair chunk of time. Being out of it from extreme tiredness also works, but I tend to get a little drifty.
Yeah, distractions can shake me out of it, too. But when I'm in a full-on writing session, I tend to have several things open. So if I get jarred out of one story I work on another.

Being 'jarred' doesn't help if you're trying to get a certain amount done each week. I'm up to about 1,500 so far this week on The Devil's Beat. Want to double that today though before I send off to my writing buddy (and go to my boyfriends).
I've done plenty on the other projects already as they've been easier to work on at work in my breaks.
I can't take my laptop this time as we're going to his on the bike, so I have to deal with pen and paper, or his computer (and my memory stick). I don't write as easily on his computer though. Everything positioned awkwardly, and the seats not comfortable, and the desk is too high. gonk
He will learn one day what a pain in the bum it is to be with a writer. I gave him a 10 minute lecture yesterday on why his computer is crap. lol. That's nothing to do with the actual functioning of it.

phantomkitsune Oh, that's great progress. Lol, that's hilarious complaints. Thanks! biggrin I'm sure you're the same though - you get so used to working with one piece of equipment so that you're comfortable, and to change just doesn't feel right. Unless you choose to change that is. you can tell he doesn't go on his computer much. His chair is a reclaimed dining room chair that needs the cushion replacing, your knees are wedged between boxes of paperwork and such under the desk, the desk is made from reclaimed wood and too high for comfortable typing, the keyboard is to the right of the table with stacks of paperwork and tubs preventing you from moving it, but the position of the keyboard means you're facing the right wall rather than having a clear view of the screen which is on your left. In the end your spine feels twisted, your knees wedged and your wrists very sore. :S

I'd need to be rid of: -The internet -My video games -My crazy, distracting family -My cell phone
I'd absolutely have to have: -Music -Food -I'd have to shower beforehand so my stench won't bug me. -Laptop -A comfortable place to sit -Caffeinated iced tea (I hate coffee)

Have on hand:
Notes. (This includes worldbuilding documents, character notes, maps, and continuity sheets.) Maybe water.

@Scraps: I have those moments too where lounging in my PJs isn't good enough and I have to shower lol.
@Jasper: do you not find music distracting too? I end up singing along mostly. I can type up things and such with music on and singing along but when it comes to typing creatively, I can't focus.
@DK: mm sorbet. *drools*

The type of music depends. I listen to instrumental/orchestral/soundtrack over half of the time, now, particularly because there are no lyrics to get into my head. I've gotten much better at turning non-lyrical music into white noise. Of course, it can still be hard to concentrate, but *shrug* better than listening to the bass from the neighbor's car.
Also I find it fascinating that I am the one with the shortest list.

@pretty: wouldn't people calling/texting you be a distraction?
@Jasper: I suppose I'm fortunate then generally we don't have noisey neighbours. My step brother tends to have music on loud and singing badly to it. That's very distracting, that's why I work better in an empty house.
