Merfolk are underwater creatures that are portrayed as half human and half fish. There are many different species of merfolk, depending on what region of the world you are in. Merfolk can be highly dangerous if provoked the wrong way. Merfolk in Greek legend are known as sirens. It is also said in legend that the sucken ancient city of Alantis is now the home to merfolk. Your job is to find out anything about merfolk. Have Fun and Thanks, Katie aka:kagome_roker

There are many contrasting stories of merfolk. I believe the oldest were that mermaids - sirens - would use their beauty and melodic voices to lead young men to a watery grave. There are other stories of more helpful creatures, saving drowning sailors and bearing them to land. Hans Christian Andersen wrote the story The Little Mermaid about one such, a mermaid who fell in love with a human man. She gave up her voice and her beautiful tail to save his life, but when he fell for another, she lost her life in accordance with the spell.

Just a comment forgive me if I sound rude: Never say think Disney I love Disney and all but they destroy Fables and Folk tales to make them more child friendly when they shouldn't. Is not this joyous cloud of happiness they make children think it is *rant rant growl shakes fist and all that jazz*
Snow White was really twisted you know she killed her step mother in the most cruel way no joke look it up o.o
Anyway... There are many other way people portray merfolk other than the fact that they are half fish and half human. Many stories portray them as ugly creatures (famous examples would be Scylla and Charybdis from the Odyssey) that have screeching voices above water but beautiful underneath the water
Scientist have come to believe that merfolk were just the sea mammals know as dugongs

Sirens are actually a bird like creature with a womans body and face...and 3 boobs. They weren't the prettiest things to look at but their voices could put sailors into trances causing them to wreck their ships.
Mermaids are for the most part portrayed as half human half fish. The most classic being the tale of the little mermaid. It is also said that went Atlantis was above water the people were human and as Atlantis sank they evolved to suit their new home and became mer-folk.

Anyways, I know faery tales in there original forms are more violent and gruesome. My favorite Grimms Faery Tale is about murder, cannibalism, revenge, and reincarnation. It is called the Juniper Tree.
